One of my all time favorites. No matter your stage in life or what your focus is, this book has great advice without being checklist oriented. Covey’s philosophy on how to prioritize and communicate with others are just a couple examples that relate to family, business, and any meaningful relationship. I purchased the audio book for easy listening, and the hard copy for a deep-dive and note taking on important sections such as his four quadrants. While the book has been out for a while, it is absolutely not outdated - Covey has compiled a timeless book in an easy-to-read style that’s great for personal reflection or a book group.

This is, hands down, one of the best and most powerful books I've ever read in my life. I have recommended it to countless people. The fact that you're seeking it out says volumes about your level of self-awareness as it is and this book builds on that. Very seldom do books really make me get involved when I read them, but this book made me break out my highlighter and notepad. There was so much good stuff I just had to take notes I could quickly reference. You know how some books make you say things out loud? You'll read something and say, "YES! EXACTLY!" or read something profound and just sit dumbfounded, going "Wow," and you have to take a moment to reflect on it? This book is full of moments like that.

There is a lot of practical stuff in here, too. Challenges for you. Ways you can start to shift your thinking by taking an emotional inventory of your life and what you're doing/feeling every day. Just writing about it makes me want to go back and read it again. If you're here looking for a book that will help you harness that little spark inside of you that's saying, "You can be better" then this book is it. You're not an animal. Life doesn't condition you like a dog. This book is about the untouchable part of your human spirit that no one besides you controls. This book is about carrying sunny weather with you where ever you go, learning how much a proactive attitude benefits you, and really how sad and wasteful it is to walk through life allowing things to ruin your day. Things don't ruin your day. YOU ruin your day. You are always in control.

Seriously, read this book. You won't regret it.

Before buying this book I've read a number of "outstanding" and a few negative reviews. After reading the book I wouldn't agree with negative reviews but won't call this book outstanding. I would call it "a book with a number good strategies/advises to follow".

It took me 2 months to read it and thinking about of what I've read. I would say that as the author had stated he had observed these 7 rules over his life, I can say that I have observed and followed myself 1st and 3rd rule and those rules are true and correct. I also have observed that over the years focusing on "first things first", doing this rule become easier and more effective over the years. I don't know if same applies to others, but my case is as it. I've read about 20 years ago a similar rule #2 and comparing it to this book I keep following the rule as: if you don't know which decision/choice to make, imagine you're dead tomorrow so your choice will not affect your self-ego.

The habit #4 although I see benefit of win/win scenarios and a good observation from the authtor is to add a "or no-deal" clause, but in the actual life the win/win not always applicable. Plus, the author has staten that he has never was working in any businesses, he had been a teacher. So, to keep telling others of what to do is different of actully doing it. To that point, in the end of the book in his interview after 25years of first publication on a question of how these habits/principles are working for him his response was he was struggling with any and all. And on the question how those principles applies to his business his answer was that he didn't manage to apply them to his business successfully. I think no further comments are needed.

Another matter in the "after 25-years" interview the author on a question of why there are 7 habits he answered because of it is in nature and so forth. But, afterwards he came up with the 8-th habit and wrote another book on it. On the habits diagram circle he had stoke it aside to the other side like a pimple :-) So is it the 7 magic habits or is the author after having a success and recognition with the first book had decided to just keep writing?

Author says in the book he was having their family mission statement written and hung on a wall and having a regular family meetings on the mission statements. As nothing "could" be wrong of having family meetings on the mission statements but having their mission statement hung on the wall isn't it a red flag?

The book starts off from 30 pages of praises of different businessmen, executives and etc. which I don't know if all 30 pages of those praises are needed? Also a foreword from his children and followed the book of his interviews, auto-biography and etc. which are another 50 pages. I've never read another book good or bad, excellent or so-so which contains another 80 pages of junk. 3-5 pages usually, but not 80.

In the beginning of the book on the habbit #1 he made a sample of a light-house and a cruiser and the argument b/w the light-house sailor and the captain of the US cruiser. Following the story the light-house was stationary and the cruiser had the same angle toward the lighthouse with a danger of a collision. So the matter is the angle to a stationary object will be the same only if the ship going directly to that object. So...., if you was not in Navy or served on a ship you won't catch that. But, one of the book praisers' was a US admiral praising the book laudly... Was he ever on a ship?

Another sample is when the author tried to apply the habit #4 (win/win) to one of his sons who was 7 at a time making him to be in charge of mowing grass. The son agreed to everything then nothing happen. He didn't do anything and when cornered said that he needed help. The definition of help is like when he tried, it didn't work, and he needed help. The key in that story is the kid even had never tried. So it was more to the dad tried to hang a duty to a son and a son in return agreed to everything to get his dad off his back and then found and excuse of not doing anything, lol.

A sad part was the author was saying 2 of US presidents had asked him to consult them on the matter of these habits/principles. By the timing of the interview you can determine the names of those presidents. It's sad you listen to all of the impressive speeches of the election campaigns, the debates, and etc. And then, those 2 people didn't know of what to do. So they turned to charlatans...

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading at least Once, and You'll find Yourself Referencing it Long After as well
Reviewed in Canada on March 23, 2023
I'm sure there are better reviews of the actual content of this book on this site or other sites. Therefore I'll just focus on what it does and how it affected me. Right now I'm only halfway through the book, and already I've hit a handful of profound insights from it. And usually a nonfiction book will give you one profound insight, if you're lucky.

You hear about this book all over the place, and so it feels like maybe it's over hyped. How great could it really be. How to Win Friends and Influence People seems to be of a similar caliber, and while that book is full of useful advice, not a whole lot of it is profound or especially perspective shifting. This book is on a completely different level, it's really playing a completely different game than nearly every other self-help or productivity book. It didn't just live up to the hype for me, it went way past what I was expecting it to. If you've ever thought of picking this book up and seeing if it was actually worth it, then do. If you're anything like me you will not be disappointed. I would also order a pen and notepad if you don't happen to have one kicking around your house, because you will want to not only take some notes, but also do the very fascinating and useful exercises in this book. Really, I'm sad I didn't read this sooner, because it helps you forge a direction in your life through that oh so famous quote of beginning with the end in mind.

I'll actually use that as an example, when you hear begin with the end in mind you think that must mean when you're starting a project or you have some sort of goal you have to think of how you want it to end up and then plan pretty much backwards. And that is great advice, and that's part of what that quote means. But that's not the whole story. Begin with the end in mind in this book is actually a form of meditation. Memento Mori. It's beginning with imagining your funeral in a handful of years, and imagining what you want different people from different parts of your life, be that workplace, family, and others, what you hope they would say about you. And then working backwards from that not as one working back from the end of a goal, but actually working back in order to set up your whole life on the track you want it to go down, instead of just floating by. I was surprised by this, and I actually put the book down at the beginning of this chapter so that I could come back to it when I had more free time and a quieter moment and do the meditation properly and get some decent life answers out of myself.

I said above that I'm only halfway through the book, and to be honest if the rest of the book is filler, it would still be worth buying for that one chapter. Either way, I'm looking forward to whatever Stephen Covey has for me in the coming chapters, and if you're at all on the fence about this book or unsure about it, hopefully this encourages you to spend the couple dollars to pick up your own copy. I have the audiobook, and I bought a physical book just cuz I knew I would be referencing it again in the future, and I will comment that the audio narration is just fine and if you want to pick up that version feel free.

This is one of those books that everyone should read once in their life.
I wish I would have gotten my hands on it earlier in life but I'm happy to have read it now as well.
The book might perhaps go too much into details and stories that are not that interesting but it really makes you think about how you approach things and makes you realize where you are losing valuable time and what you can do to do it better and live a better life.
