The Most Complete Starter Kit with Hgh Quality Components and Tutorial
Quantity and quality are both important here in ELELGOO UNO R3 starter kit. The most essential parts in this kit are UNO R3 controller board and expansion board, which is a perfect clone with excellent product finish compatible with Arduino projects.
Besides, we offer other over 60 kinds of components and sensors from small parts like LED diodes, resistors and potentiometer to big parts like LCD1602, RFID module and 830 tie-points breadboard, which meet your demands for your different projects either it is simple or complex.
Sturdy quality is definitely the most important thing to ELEGOO even with so many components provided we never compromised on the quality. Instead we keep improving our product quality in our own factory and we produce the products by ourselves under high standards and strict quality control. Pins and wires on some of the parts like LCD16502 and motors have been pre-soldered which is very convenient and saves your time.
74HC595 Shift Register and LEDs
74HC595 is a Serial to Parallel Converter which has eight outputs (perfect) and three inputs that you use to feed data into it a bit at a time. This chip makes it a little slower to drive the LEDs (you can only change the LEDs about 500,000 times a second instead of 8,000,000 a second) but it's still really fast, way faster than humans can detect, so it's worth it!
74HC595 shift register is a type of chip that holds what can be thought of as eight memory locations, each of which can either be a 1 or a 0. To set each of these values on or off, we feed in the data using the 'Data' and 'Clock' pins of the chip.
LCD1602 Display module
LCD1602 module is a display that has an LED backlight and can display two rows with up to 16 characters on each row. You can see the rectangles for each character on the display and the pixels that make up each character. The display is just white on blue and is intended for showing text.
Lining up the display with the top of the breadboard helps to identify its pins without too much counting, especially if the breadboard has its rows numbered with row 1 as the top row of the board. Do not forget, the long yellow lead that links the slider of the pot to pin 3 of the display. The 'pot' is used to control the contrast of the display.
DC Motors and L293D Transistor
In this project you will learn how to control a small DC motor using an UNO R3 and a L293D transistor, which is a very useful chip. It can actually control two motors independently. We are just using half the chip in this lesson, most of the pins on the right hand side of the chip are for controlling a second motor.
L293D is quadruple high-current half-H drivers and designed to provide bidirectional drive currents of up to 1 A at voltages from 4.5 V to 36 V. The L293D is also designed to provide bidirectional drive currents of up to 600-mA at voltages from 4.5 V to 36 V and drive inductive loads such as relays, solenoids, dc and bipolar stepping motors, as well as other high-current/high-voltage loads in positive-supply applications.

Chris, the founder of ELEGOO, found out that most enterprises in the STEM industry focused on the hardware of open-source electronics and did not have tools to create a complete product by combining electronic hardware and structural shells.
What makes our products unique?
We have excellent R&D team, constantly upgrading and improving products, and after-sales service team for quick support.
What problem are we solving?
100% compatible with Arduino, ELEGOO's kits are best-practice for beginners who have no appropriate technical tools to learn about electronics.

First, the set arrives in a very useful organizer. I found this to be a really nice feature and helps save time when searching for parts to build each different project.
Upon initial inspection, the quality of each component appeared very acceptable. Definitely low-quality parts — as you’d rightfully expect at this price point — but certainly no where near “junk” quality. By low-quality, I’m referring to mostly the solder quality, but also the individual piece-parts used in the assemblies are your standard Chinese low-grade parts. Some soldered parts were installed misaligned and some PCB assemblies still had visible contamination on them from inadequate washing. Again, this is all to be expected at this price point and so far, I was very pleased. The real test is if everything worked...
I completed all the tutorials and found the instructions very easy to follow. A CD is included in the kit, which supposedly contains all the required software, tutorials and datasheets. My laptop doesn’t have a CD ROM drive so I downloaded everything on the Elegoo website. That’s probably the best option anyway — that way, you know you are using the latest versions of everything. The datasheets were a nice-to-have, although some of them were not as detailed as they should be. Still useful nonetheless. The tutorial manual was clearly written — it’s definitely not poorly translated Chinese-to-English like I expected. It’s entirely written in clear English. In some places, I wish it did a better job explaining the code and syntax, but honestly, that’s something Google can handle. Every tutorial was completed easily and I discovered only one technical mistake: the tutorial on DC motor control omitted a ground jumper between the Arduino board and the breadboard/motor controller board. Consequently, the control signal logic levels were not correctly referenced to the same ground potential on both boards. The motor did not respond correctly at first but some quick troubleshooting lead me to add the ground connection and everything worked flawlessly after that. I’ve tested every component in the kit now and everything works as intended. I’m a little bit surprised at this but very, VERY happy.
This kit has been a ton of fun to play with. It’s perfect for anyone wanting to get started with Arduinos. It has so many different cool components that this will keep you entertained and get your creative juices flowing. I highly recommend it!
There were however minor issues with the kit that I can easily overlook, but I thought I should still point them out:
- The kit comes with a relay that isn't attached to a PCB and because of that it doesn't exactly fit on the bread board. This wouldn't have been a huge issue since I thought I could use the wires with female headers, but the pins on the relay are too short and thin for a secure connection. However, what I found entertaining was that the lessons provided recommended that I bend one of the pins of the relay in order to use it with the breadboard. I did exactly that and the relay did fit on the breadboard, but it now also has a crooked pin.
- This is most likely a issue with my package, but the case came with a small crack on on of the corners of the lid. This might be due to shipping, but none of the components seemed to be damaged so I guess the case did its job protecting the items.
- The included jumper wires aren't the best quality and as when I'm writing this review I've broken the tips of 3 wires already. However they do their job of being wires just fine and I can always get replacements or just use actual wires with the ends striped off.
- The included 9V battery actually contains lead which is actually considered hazardous waste so it'll be inconvenient when I need to properly dispose of it.
Overall this is a great kit to start learning and experimenting with an Arduino and the amount of things you get is definitely worth the price. If Elegoo does decide to refresh this kit I would recommend replacing the included disk with something such as a USB flash drive since most modern computers no longer come with a DVD drive (Note: the lessons, documentation, and libraries for this kit is available for download on Elegoo's website which is what I used).
My 9 year old son and I have both been building various projects based on Paul McWhorter's lessons and everything has worked perfectly and has been rugged enough to handle building, tearing down, and rebuilding several times over.
I'd recommend this to anyone looking to get into arduino and programming the physical world!
