An Amazon Charts bestseller.

Stay calm, keep smiling, and watch your step. In this marriage of secrets and lies, nothing is what it seems.

For days, all of Denver, Colorado, has worried over the fate of a missing child, little Tanner Holcomb. Then, a miracle: handsome, athletic Johnny Bradley finds him, frightened but unharmed, on a hiking trail miles from his wealthy family’s mountain home.

In a heartbeat, his rescuer goes from financially strapped fitness trainer to celebrated hero. The heat of the spotlight may prove too much for Johnny’s picture-perfect family, however. His wife, Veronica, despises the pressure of the sudden fame, afraid that secrets and bitter resentments of her marriage may come to light. And she’s willing to do anything to keep them hidden.

False Step aptly demonstrates author Victoria Helen Stone as a gifted novelist with a genuine flair for originality and a distinctive, reader engaging, narrative storytelling style.” —Midwest Book Review

“Intense and chilling, False Step wickedly rewards thriller fans with a compulsive read that’ll leave readers wondering how well they know their loved ones. I was riveted!” —Kerry Lonsdale, Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author

From the Publisher

My favorite type of summer read is something I can devour in one sitting but will linger with me days after reading the final page, which is why I’m thrilled to introduce False Step by Victoria Helen Stone. It’s both fast-paced and unforgettable.

Victoria is a master of page-turning suspense, bringing readers deep into the lives of complex characters whose dark impulses threaten to destroy everything they hold dear. In
False Step, she delivers a riveting story of a family that becomes instant media darlings when husband and father Johnny Bradley finds a young child who’s been missing for days. The sheen of celebrity is short-lived, however, as his wife, Veronica, starts to suspect something sinister is behind Johnny’s rescue—and as her own deep, dark secrets are put at risk.

False Step is a chilling reminder that we all have things we keep hidden and begs the reader to ask, How well do I really know the people closest to me? It’s a question I guarantee you’ll consider long after you put down the book.

Victoria Helen Stone is the nom de plume for USA Today bestselling author Victoria Dahl. After publishing more than twenty-five novels, she is now taking a turn toward the darker side of genre fiction. Born and educated in the Midwest, she finished her first manuscript just after college. In 2016, the American Library Association awarded her the prestigious Reading List Award for outstanding genre fiction. Having escaped the plains of her youth, she now resides with her family in a small town high in the Rocky Mountains, where she enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, and not skiing (too dangerous).

First, a trigger warning: while this is not a romance, there is cheating and it is crucial to the story.

If you've read the book description and it interests you, don't hesitate for a second; it lived up to all my expectations, which were considerable. Victoria Helen Stone has written yet another phenomenal book. Her writing is vivid and eloquent, and right from the start, you get that feeling of impending doom. I could feel Veronica's panic, her frustration, her rage, her helplessness, her disbelief; the dialogues are amazing and always realistic. The characters are superbly fleshed out, there are secrets, startling twists and turns, and Ms. Stone slowly builds up the tension until it crescendoes to its terrifying conclusion.

With FALSE STEP, Victoria Helen Stone has cemented her position amongst the greats; she writes a mean domestic thriller. The story is tightly and carefully plotted, the writing impeccable, the editing flawless, and although I had figured out parts of the storyline, the ending was not at all what I expected; it was so much more satisfying. FALSE STEP is completely different from the author's unforgettable masterpiece, JANE DOE (my favourite book of 2018), and just as thrilling, exciting, and utterly spellbinding. In my eyes, Victoria Helen Stone can do no wrong, she is fearless, bold, original and she has secured her place on my auto-buy list.

ᴇɴᴛᴇʀᴛᴀɪɴɪɴɢ. ᴀᴅᴅɪᴄᴛɪᴠᴇ. ғᴀsᴛ-ᴘᴀᴄᴇᴅ.

Victoria Helen Stone has crafted an entertaining fast-paced Addictive story. Johnny and Veronica were college sweethearts the perfect couple. BUT as all avid thriller Readers know... no couple is perfect and this one wasn’t even close! So many secrets, so many lies, all that threaten to come out when Johnny earns hero status after rescuing a young boy. SO even though Johnny’s newfound status leads to an increase in Business for his personal training, it also puts this family in a vulnerable position. What happens when you can’t hide from the truth anymore? When all it takes is one falls step? And all the lies and secrets will come crumbling down?

Where to start with this one? Well first off I disliked all the major characters in this book. None of them had many if any redeeming qualities and they all had a lot to hide. I did however have compassion for Johnny and Veronica’s 11-year-old daughter Sydney, the poor girl was caught in the crossfire of all this nonsense. I also had a lot of sympathy for Veronica‘s mother, sister and her sisters wife. Innocent bystanders... I seriously do not think Johnny or Veronica considered how any of their actions impacted anyone but themselves? At times I have to admit this did get frustrating and a little tiring, but then something would happen and I was just hooked! Miss Stone definitely has an addictive writing style that kept me engaged the entire time. I figured out the who and the Y pretty early I just didn’t completely no the how. However this did not detract from the story at all, because at the end I was seriously on the edge of my seat just waiting to see how this all was going to play out! Sometimes it’s not all about the twist, it is about the getting there! If you’re looking for a quick absorbing thriller then this is the book!

This book had interesting parts, but mostly scrolled quickly through the excessively needless blah blah blah.
Glad it was a free read..

This is a fantastic book in its genre. To, me, what makes a suspense story thrilling is if the story is believable. This story is believable. The characters are not likeable, especially Veronica, but the author did a great job of developing a believable character. The stressed mother supporting her family, aware that her dreams aren't going to come true, questioning every decision she's made, jaded and cynical - risking everything to try and get a litt of her dreams back - this makes a relatable character. She is imploding even as her husband is working overtime to hold it together and keep her content. So read this book. I think you will enjoy it.

No spoiler with review. Book has explicit sexual activity and graphic violence

False step, with an interesting premise, a good opening, and one fairly decent twist, managed to hold my interest despite excessive amounts of rambling thoughts from one character along with non-redeeming behaviors from several characters. Yes, some of the story was predictable, but the convoluted relationships, despite the hints at what was likely to occur next, still had potential to pull me into the web of the story and hold my interest until conclusion.

Veronica is shocked to see her husband, Johnny, on a news video. Johnny, tears streaming down his face and calling out “He’s okay…”, and moments later, “I’ve found him!” is seen carrying the limp body of a young child. The reader immediately knows that the child has been missing, and is found, but not whether or not the child is alive. The story evolves through Veronica’s point of view, and includes varied characters, a few perhaps in cliché form, with some being loving and stable, yet others seemingly with few redeeming qualities. Veronica, who is clearly codependent, feels trapped in a seemingly happy, but actually unhappy marriage with her handsome and popular husband. Something is going on with Johnny, but what? Is he returning to relationships with some of his former and shady friends? Is he having an affair? One of Johnny’s best friends, Micah, is described as lean, sharp, ambitious, successful, and attractive. Other characters include Sydney the sweet daughter, Veronica’s parents, and Veronica’s sister, and the sister’s wife. At times Veronica's over-thinking of events tends to make the pace of the story sluggish. Veronica tends to justify her inappropriate behaviors as necessary for maintaining a steady family relationship for her daughter Sydney, who is oblivious to the problems that her parents are having. These problems worsen, and others surface, leading Victoria, Johnny, and others deeper into a web of deceit with potential for a very undesirable outcome.

Found the main character a little boring but that makes the story. Bored and boring woman in search of excitement gets more than she bargain for in her lover and her husband. Leads well into the story climax. Recommend.

One of those books you just love from page one. I whizzed through this book, eagerly awaiting the next twist in the story.

Nothing is what it seems. That’s the gist of this novel. It’s an interesting plot with characters that I connected with and felt were real very early on.

A father and husband is hailed a national hero after discovering a missing child on a hike. He’s the one to save this child and be thrust into the spotlight. The impact this has on his wife and family is then a rolling stone that doesn’t stop. Life changes forever.

It’s got a cracking strong pace and is one of those that’s good to grab if in a reading slump like I am just now. It keeps you intrigued. The reveals and twists are good. The only reason this isn’t five stars is I guessed the final twist easily. I’m not sure if the author intended the reader to get that hint or not. Just personal taste. I like a twist that leaves me speechless.

A great read that I’d recommend. Four solid stars for this!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book sucked me in...

This was such an unexpected surprise... it was a psychological thriller... a domestic suspense... a twisted relationship tale... and to be honest having just finished it in one sitting and being close to midnight ... I am in both shock and awe but not surprised as I had read Victoria Helen Stone's ‘Jane Doe’ last year and adored it. ‘False Step’ is different but it’s still a dark twisted tale that has you questioning every person in this books motive and madly swiping try to unlock the next piece of the puzzle.

Tanner Holcomb had been missing for a few days...
‘Tanner Holcomb had gone missing four days before. A three-year-old boy lost in the mountains outside Denver. The temperature had been 50 degrees that first night. Survivable. But it had dropped to 38 the second. The entire city had watched and waited and sent hordes of volunteers into the foothills.’

Then a miracle happens and Johnny Bradley stumbles across the boy while on a hike in the local park. The boy is disheveled but unharmed and Johnny becomes the local hero...
Johnny is a handsome personal trainer, he fits in perfectly when the local news stations paint Johnny as the town's newfound celebrity. His wife Veronica however is having issues with Johnny's notoriety and is apprehensive about engaging with the media.

Veronica's marriage to Johnny isn't perfect (who’s is) but will this intense media scrutiny be too much to handle for her family...
‘Veronica felt frozen, her hands and feet going numb. Johnny—her Johnny, for better or worse—had found little Tanner Holcomb and would return him to his family. Johnny hadn’t even been part of the search. He’d just gone out for one of his normal hikes, same as he did once or twice every week when there wasn’t snow on the ground.’

Right away you know there are cracks in Veronica’s and Johnny’s marriage. When the police start questioning Johnny’s story and pull Veronica in asking where their whereabouts were on the night that Tanner was kidnapped, Veronica starts to get nervous. Soon Veronica is wondering what part did Johnny play in Tanners disappearance...

Nothing is what it appears to be behind the disappearance of Tanner. This book sucked me in. The build up, the betrayals and mystery around Veronica’s and Johnny’s marriage, not to mention the fantastic twist had me madly swiping...
