Plus -
Nice video clock with multiple clock faces
Shows feeds from both my blink and wyse cameras.
Can customize to allow just clock to display.
Nice visual display of any alexa questions like what's the weather.
The sound isn't bad for a small device.
Display dims in the dark
Ability to turn off the camera feed.
Minus -
Too much screen display upon setup, from hints to news, but you can turn this off.
Overall – I was really pleased, I bought this on impulse, when it arrived, I thought, why did I buy this little monitor, what use would it be to me? I am not going to watch movies on a five inch screen. But I found that it's a great replacement for a clock radio with visuals. It is nice to get visual of the next few hours or days of weather, as well as alexa deals of today, and I especially like being able to say show the front door cam. I can stream music as well and operate all my alexa enabled devices as well. It even shows what your light percentage is when you tell it to turn on the lights. The visual representation really helps. I was able to turn off the constant changing feeds and make this more into my own device. The display is the perfect size for a nightstand. I was really surprised how useful this became to me. For what I paid, definitely Five stars.
All features can to utilized if you own a phone/tablet with clock app, and another echo device. But may not be as compact or have a portable form factor. Also the Echo Show 5 is somewhat more convenient depending on what you plan do with it.
The 5 in the name is not the the iteration rather a 5.5 inch screen size. Similar to non XL phones. Naming is probably in line with Amazon's Kindle Fire line of devices. In fact if you put a phone next to it, it may be around the same size (probably without the large bezels). Review photos, show it next to an iphone XR
First impression: Looks like an alarm clock. Has an always on display. Does not have a static clock display as it cycles through random trending news, weather and alexa voice suggestions along with the time and date. Your next alarm/timer countdown shows up on the upper right of the screen which is a very nice feature. No need to go into Alexa app or ask Alexa when's the next alarm if you forgot.
You can set a background screen saver of pictures through your Amazon Photo profile if you don't like the default backgrounds or want to use it as a digital photo frame
When using the activation word Alexa; it doesn't have the nice circular lights as the other echo devices, instead just a horizontal line on bottom of the screen. Would be cool if there's LEDs around the entire edge of device when you say the key word.
2 mics vs 4 on Echo Dot 3rd gen. But has 1 more than most older echo devices.
Doesn't have a physical Alexa button like the echo dot, so must use voice activation word; unless you link it to an Amazon remote.
Screen doesn't show text of what you say. Example: Google assistant on your phone will show you what it predict you're saying if you use microphone/voice feature. Will show you various slides relevant to what you ask it. Example: when you ask for movie show times it's easier to view a list on screen then having Alexa reading out audibly on an echo dot the entire list of show times
Device has a physical privacy shutter on camera. Camera is not really impressive at 1 mega pixel. It's not HD, but the person on the other side can recognize you (unless their vision is really bad)
Able to watch video on Amazon Prime, similar experience to watching on phone with lower resolution. Can watch youtube, but through silk internet browser. Probably never use it unless absolutely necessary like the 3DS or Wii U Nintendo systems if you own them.
Music. Able to view highlighted lyrics as song is playing if you're steaming music from Amazon Music. Karaoke style. Not able to do this with spotify music though.
Sunrise alarm feature. 15mins before your alarm, the screen will gradually turn brighter mimicking a sun rise. only works if you set your alarm between 4am and 9am and with auto brightness on (on by default) as it'll gradually increase to max brightness. Amazon probably only made it work between these times since your room may still be dark; as in a lighter setting the gradual light brightness may not have any effect. At night the screen will auto adjust to a black ground with orange text.
Tap top of the device with palm and/or fingers to snooze alarm. Cannot customize snooze times. Always set to 10mins
No battery. If power and/or internet goes out; alarm won't sound off similar to other echo devices. Unless you have backup power in your home or hook it up to a backup generator/battery.
Micro USB port on back is not for power. Micro usb port possibly for firmware updates without internet connection.
Power is supplied through a proprietary cable like most other echo devices. Wall outlet is huge and can take up an extra plug space especially if you use a power strip
Compared to Echo Show, it has a smaller screen/lower resolution and the audio is not as good. No Dolby audio. able to connect a speaker to it via 3.5mm cable. It may distort at higher volume. Has good bass, able to feel the vibrations on the table. Speakers are on back, so won't fill the room as much as the Echo Dot which has a 360 speaker. Fabric on speaker similar to echo dot and Google Home Mini
Able to link the ring door bell. only able to view live video. cannot view motions or rings. Takes about 5secs to load when viewing.
vs nest hub. depends on what echo system your household is using Google or Amazon
If you have a old phone/tablet laying around (use always on alarm app) and an echo dot, you can just put them close together to essentially do the same thing with some workarounds. If you don't want to jump through a lot of hoops, you can just pay for convenience
