If you don't need the hub, this is the best Logitech Remote available to date!

If you don't need the hub, this is the best Logitech Remote available to date!
I usually begin these reviews by talking a bit about my love for Logitech remotes. I have been reviewing Logitech remotes for over 8 years now starting with the Harmony One and just about every product that has been released since. I was using these remotes before most people even knew about them. I have bought them as gifts for friends and family. Everyone I know that owns a Logitech remote has been amazed by its simplicity to program and operate. In short, the Logitech ELITE and 950 models are the most elaborate and absolute best remotes of the product line to date.Sans some minor graphics changes on the keys, both remotes are exactly the same. The difference lies in the hub that is included with the ELITE model but not the 950.Now, do you need the hub? In most cases, no. The hub is only essential if you want to put your components in cabinets where an RF signal would not reach them. Additionally, the hub allows you to use your smartphone or tablet as a remote in addition to the Logitech handheld. If you just need the best remote available and all your components are in direct sight of where you are sitting, the 950 model will suit you fine.Setting up this remote is extremely easy. This is what I would advise you to do first before taking delivery of your remote...* Write down the brand and model number of every component in your home theater system. This includes your display, receiver, 4k/Blu-ray/DVD players, satellite box and streaming player.* Make note of each device's connection to the display and the receiver. For instance, which HDMI input is being used by each component when going to the receiver or display?Taking these notes in advance will ensure a quick and painless setup. In fact, if there are no hiccups along the way, initial setup could take under 15 minutes. When you get your 950 remote you will find the included USB cable. This attaches to your desktop or laptop computer. The next step is to log onto Logitech's website and download the MYHARMONY desktop application. Upon launching the application on your computer, you will be instructed to enter the model numbers of all your devices. It will also ask you how these devices are attached to your display and whether you want your television or a soundbar to control the volume. What's really neat about the desktop application is that it allows you to upload .jpg icons of your choice to act as representations of your various activities. For example, next to my WATCH TV button on the remote, I have a picture icon of the Verizon Fios logo that I downloaded off the Internet and uploaded to the MYHARMONY desktop application. For WATCH 4k, I downloaded the 4k logo from the internet and uploaded it in the same way. It really adds a bit of panache and professionalism to the remote layout.Additionally, through the MYHARMONY desktop application, you can select your local provider, have all your channels uploaded to the remote and even select the top 50 that you want at your fingertips.Honestly, the entire process is very easy and the software effortlessly walks you through it. Even a novice shouldn't have any difficulty understanding how to set it up.The remote itself has a very solid build and it feels terrific in the hand thanks to underlying material that provides extra grip. It comes with a charging cradle that allows it to charge upright. The 950 works just as well as all the other Harmony remotes. Once programmed, you just press the activity you want (such as WATCH TV, WATCH BLU-RAY, WATCH APPLE TV, etc.) and see your commands come to life. The television and proper devices power on and your display switches to the correct HDMI input. With the remote in hand, you now control the volume and channel changes. If for some reason something does not power on or switch to the proper HDMI input -- no problem -- a simple press of the HELP button will have the remote correcting the issue on its own.Oh, less I forget to mention, if you use a Tivo box this remote also replicates the commands on their remote including commercial skip.As I mentioned earlier, I own just about every Logitech remote ever made. The 950 and the ELITE are the best remotes the company makes and it's amazing to see how far the technology has improved over the years while keeping simplicity on the user end. Once you buy one of these remotes you will wonder how you ever got along without it.
