Good, but not great, BioWare game
4 Stars
Good, but not great, BioWare game
OK, let's get the graphics issue out of the way first. Are some of the textures (especially on characters) and animations weird? Yes. Does that ruin the game? Not for me. Yes, there are better looking games on this generation of consoles (eg. Uncharted 4), but this is a great game.WHAT I LIKEDThe story is solid, though there are some plot holes you can fly a starship through. The NPCs are almost all entertaining. Usually, in a BioWare game, there are only a couple of companions that are really interesting, but here I like them all. I especially like the inter-companion banter while you're out adventuring.Scenery is, for the most part, fantastic. Some of the planets have a little too much empty nothingness and there are 2 desert planets, so that's a little boring. But spaceports and jungles and colonies all look great. As has been pointed out all over the internet, the character textures and animations are sometimes questionable, but most of the time they don't stick out to me, and I actually think many of the characters look good.WHAT I SORT OF LIKEThe combat could be great but for two things. First, the cover system is poor. You can't manually take cover, you have to move close to objects the game deems are worthy of giving cover. All kinds of things go wrong at this point. You can be standing behind a large rock and get shot from the other side of the rock because you're not close enough to "be in" cover. You can take cover next to an object and get stuck in the object. (Has happened to me at least three times. Had to reload each time. Combat image is my PC stuck in cover.)Second, as far as I can tell, you can only have three powers mapped at any time. This is fine at lower levels, but as you level up, you open up a lot more powers and I can't figure out if there's a way to quickly switch out your "loaded" powers. Very annoying.Aside from that, I think actual combat mechanics are great and I love the huge variety of gear. I quickly used skill points on weapon slots so I can carry four weapons into every mission. I also like you can use traditional ammo, or beam weapons that "overheat" (similar to earlier ME games). And the crafting system is really great as well, giving you a lot of control over your mission loadouts. There have been some annoying, but not game-breaking, bugs. Regular clipping issues detract a lot more from immersion than funny walks (image attached). A couple of game crashes. Some side quests that won't "finish." I want to say, "usual BioWare stuff," but this game seems buggier than other BW games. A lot less polish on this one.WHAT I DON'T LIKEVast swaths of nothingness. I had this problem with Dragon Age: Inquisition as well. BioWare is trying to make an "open world" game by making huge levels that are essentially empty, and then you have to travel around in them (desert image). Running back-and-forth through space, which always takes a extra time. Oh, and the home base, where you go over-and-over-and-over again for missions is way too big and segmented into multiple sections so you have to run around like a headless chicken finishing up quests.OVERALLI, personally, love the game. But it just has a few too many issues to give it a full five stars.
