I got this on sale for my new Moto Z3. The speaker battery was initially dead and took about 2 hours to charge fully. It fits perfectly with the phone. It does make the phone quite thick. I had to download two separate apps from play store for it to work. The Moto market app failed to work. Initially I don't have any complaints. I do wish you could use the speaker without having to remove the protective case or if the speaker doubled as some sort of protection for the phone. I think of this as a novelty to use with the moto z's. I got it on sale on Christmas for $31 regularly $150. It's fun, functional, Alexa works great, audio is decent. If it wasn't only $31 and I had paid $150 for it, I would without a doubt return it and get a Bluetooth Bose or JBL speaker. Even at $31 I find myself asking why I even bought this... The answer I'm left with is "for the novelty of it". Bottom line it's effectively useless if I break my phone tomorrow. 15 years ago I would've lost my mind over this... Now... I'm asking why isn't it Bluetooth, why doesn't it double as a backup battery for your phone, and why doesn't it function as a case or some kind of protection. Just my thoughts.
Pros:
- nice sound quality and volume for the money
- more versatile and cheaper than jbl mod
- has it's own battery (that will outlast the phone on a single charge)
Cons:
- It doesn't "hear" you as well as an actual echo or echo dot
- you can't choose the wake word (which is especially annoying if you already have another echo in earshot)
Tips:
1. Tell Alexa to "pause" (if music is playing) before giving any longer commands or questions. It seems the mics have trouble hearing you when music is playing.
2. Turn off voice recognition.
At first I thought this setting was to just recognize voice commands... You know, to listen. But then I realized it's to ONLY hear YOUR voice. Having this on adds extra security but boy oh boy, does it not pick up commands nearly as well with this on. It seems it must be harder for it to distinguish your specific voice vs just the words spoken by anyone. This means even when it is you, the echo is far less likely to "hear" or at least respond to you when you ask it a question.
Hope this helps!! 🙂
This is a speaker mod, so any sound that comes out of your phone will come out of the speakers. So if you use Google Assistant, it'll work with that. If you play games, it'll work with them. If you use YouTube, Pandora, or Spotify apps, it'll work with those. So if you're using the Alexa app, the speaker mod will output the sounds that Alexa makes.
I like using the Alexa Speaker Mod as a speaker phone (because it has microphones) and a charger dock. I just set my phone down on it, then it charges, but it prioritizes charging the mod first, then the phone. It's almost as convenient as wireless charging.
It's easy to disconnect the mod one-handed because there is a gap groove where a finger (or two) can be inserted for prying. Compared to the JBL Speaker Mod, I need to use 2 hands to disconnect it.
One note. You can not use the camera with this mod attached.
I like the built in stand, it gives a nice stable base. The illuminated base is a little excessive....to each his own.
The speaker is well made and appears to be durable.
I do not use Alexa, so I can not comment on that function.
I like this speaker.
It snaps on perfectly, is nicely made and looks good but has zero functionality.
There is no way to get any customer service to advise you.
I have 2 of these phones and bought 2 speakers and neither one works at all.
Maybe they're just selling off old returned broken stock.
These are a total waste of time energy and money.
