I was an early adapter of Android tablets so I was familiar with the OS. I make or receive very few phone calls so a smart phone never interested me. I went for the Mint Mobile program and setup was simple. I've only made about three phone calls since I've had it but LTE instead of being limited to WiFi makes the device useful for geocaching. I also recently bought a car with a Bluetooth capable radio so streaming Amazon or Jango music added some variety. With the COVID thing many people are telecomputing so we use Slack to communicate and it works well for that.
The form factor is more convenient than a 7" tablet. Battery consumption is higher than a WiFi tab and it isn't the fastest charging cycle in the world but it hasn't proven to be much of a problem. All in all for someone not into phones I've found it quite useful.
UPDATE:
I have discovered that the audio output through the 3.5 mm jack is poor quality. The volume is unstable, and it is very noticeable when listening to music. The best way I can describe it is that the sound "trembles," and this happens regardless of which music app or which wired headphones I use. Perhaps my phone is defective and I could get a replacement under warranty, but I doubt that I will bother, considering that I do not use the 3.5 mm jack very often. The phone admittedly feels a bit cheap, and I am afraid that a replacement unit would have a more significant defect.
Nokia 4.2 si, or was, inexpensive. The device is a piece of crap. There is no one at Amazon to get a replacemnet [purchased 02/2020: 5 months!] device is practically unuseable!
Avoid at all costs, buy the best and cry once.
