However, when connected to the Kano Raspberry Pi computer the fun only continues. Kano provides the introductory understanding of code through their block building software that translates into the fundamental understanding of code. The block building is comprehensive and easy to use. Kids loved the challenges and were excited to learn more and more JavaScript at the end of each one. Their new project is to choose a classical game like Super Mario or Megaman and remake it on the Kano Pixel.
You're getting a lot of hardware for that price. A 128 element RGB array, decent battery and power management, case, wifi, lots of ports and controls ... Just do a web search for 'kano pixel micropython' and you'll find free code projects and instructions from reputable maker/instruction websites. There is even helpful discussion from Kano employees on their forum, so they clearly are aware of this and endorse it.
Maybe they feel bad for having failed with this product? Sorry guys - love ya (and originally from London myself, so wishing you much success ) but you clearly hit the classic problem of underestimating the level of investment required to develop and maintain software to support well designed and manufactured hardware .. even when it is open source based. You're far from the only ones to fail in this way, and hopefully the new products are doing better. I'll take all the cheap Pixels I can buy as your apology :-)
The Kano Pixel could have and should have been way better. In fact, it was better. According to research that I've done since buying the Pixel, it seems that this product was originally part of a Kickstarter campaign. The product that was sold to backers of the Kickstarter campaign was a much better, much more useful product because the hardware used to build that version of the device was superior to the device available on Amazon now.
You cannot save custom programs that you make to the device. The only stuff you can do with the standalone device is play some pre-loaded games and animations along with some custom animations that you can make. Otherwise, the device needs to be connected to a computer via wifi or a usb cable at all times. Custom programs need to be started from a computer and can only be played while connected to a computer.
If that wasn't bad enough, the device uses your computer's microphone for custom software that you make and for the guided lessons even though the Pixel comes with a built in microphone. It took me ages to figure out why the microphone worked for the built in software but not for the guided lessons (my PC mic is normally muted unless I have a reason to use it). I cannot imagine why this isn't more clear, but this limitation really hinders the usefulness of the device since, while it can be connected via wifi instead of a cable, you still have to be right next to your computer to use the mic.
It's my understanding that none of these limitations applied to the version of the Pixel sold to Kickstarter backers and I'm left wondering why. Looking at the Kickstarter page, I see that backers of the campaign were asked to pledge $99.99 for the device and they were told the device would cost $129.99 at retail. I suspect this is a lot of the problem since the device maker would not want to break the pricing promise it made to Kickstarter backers. Also, I see that there is a note on the Kickstarter that cannot be read except by backers of the campaign entitled "Bringing the Pixel Kit to the masses, and why yours is special". Like I said I can't read the note, but I suspect it says something to the effect of "we realized that $129.99 is way more than people will pay for this thing so we're going to release a hamstrung version of the device and charge $79.99." That way their backers couldn't call them out on pricing and they could release the device at a price that at least had a chance of selling.
At any rate, what this means is that you're getting a hamstrung device with some very significant and baffling hindrances to usability that costs way more than it should. It is literally an array of 128 RGB LED lights that are controlled by your computer. For eighty dollars! It does not appear that Kano bothered to change any of the information on their website or sales material to reflect the significant limitations introduced since the Kickstarter campaign. I already gave this thing to my kid for her birthday so I can't take it back now, but this is a purchase that I would absolutely not make again.
It is a great product for children to learn basic coding and it’s an easy way for them to do so as there are clear instructions on how to create blocks of code.
I would recommend this for children who want to learn to code as it is interesting and great fun.
Top reviews from other countries
The programming language is Scratch and only Scratch. They mention Javascript repeatedly, and indeed, you can see some autogenerated Javascript as output from the Scratch blocks you put together, but this is just decoration. You cannot edit this code. It is not a stepping stone from Scratch to JS. You won't be learning any JS this way.
There is no help section on their website for this product at all. Go take a look. Not a sausage. If you search for 'pixel', you will find 4 absolutely pointless articles in their entire document base.
Worst of all, you can't store the programs you write on the device. Once you unplug, that's it. It can only store *animations*. Pictures. So forget making a cute device that flashes when you get a tweet, or creating your own alarm clock: unless you leave it connected to a computer at all times, this will not be happening. Which makes the fact it has Wifi completely pointless.
Essentially, they made a better version, which they gave to the people who bought it via Kickstarter, and that's what all the reviews you'll find are talking about. Then, for the real device for mass manufacture, they cut costs by cutting the spec, removing the ability to store and run programs while detached from the computer.
I contacted their tech support once me and my son discovered this (to some heartbreak - none of our imagined projects will now work) and it was confirmed by email that this is the case.
Please, please, PLEASE save your money from this paperweight.
The LEDs are very beautiful. Get yourself an Arduino and a Neo Pixel shield and do something useful with your time and money. How they can market this in good conscience, I cannot fathom. Hugely disappointing.
