From the manufacturer
Control your Smart Bulbs with a mobile device, whether at home or away
Take your Smart Light control with you when you travel, edit routines and set timers even when you’re away from home
Add color and voice control
Expand your system with Hue Smart Lights in 16 million colors to accent your home and unleash your creativity. Add up to 50 lights throughout your home on one Hue Hub, no Wi-Fi extender required. Like Hue White smart lights, Hue color lights are Energy Star certified and last up to 22 years.
Do I need a Hue Hub to control my lights with an Echo?
With the regular Echo it is necessary to have a Hue Hub in order to control your Hue lights. If you have an EchoPlus device, you will only have access to basic features - on / off / dim /using pre-set scenes.
Can I control Hue lights without a Hue Hub?
Yes, you can either add Hue White bulbs to a dimmer switch (up to 10) or go for a Hue luminaire that is pre-paired with a Hue dimmer. However, this does not work with Hue color lights.
Does the Hue Hub need to be plugged into a router or can it be used with a Wi-Fi connection only?
Yes, for the Hue Hub to work, it necessary for it to be hard-wired into your primary router using the included Ethernet cable.
Do I need internet to control the Hue system?
No. You can hard-wire your Hue Hub into a router without internet. However, this means that you will only have access to your Hue system while at home, not remotely. An internet connection is needed to control your lights remotely.
Can I use my Hue lights outside or in the bathroom?
We recommend only using Hue Outdoor Smart lights outside and special bathroom luminaires in the bathroom as these are tested for those environments.

Setup was not too difficult, I did learn that it was much easier to set up the bulbs if I installed them one at a time rather than all at once. After you install the bulb in your lamp, the Hue app will find it and give it a generic name like bulb1. If you are just setting up one bulb, this is fine because you know that lamp is bulb1, but if you install all the bulbs first and then go to the app, you will see bulb1, bulb2, bulb3, bulb4 but will need to take further steps to figure out which one is in which lamp.
The hub gives me the ability to control the lights with the app, even if the internet is down because it uses the WiFi connection to operate and is not completely dependent on an internet connection. Voice control is not available because an internet connection is required for that, but I knew that going into this and the internet does not stay down too long anyway.
The dim and brightness features of the bulb work great and with a wide range of illumination and fade on and off . You can set the default dim level in the Hue app and when the bulbs are controlled by voice, they will come on at the preset level and you can specify to your Digital Assistant what percentage of brightness you want.
Making the switch to LED bulbs in the house. Having some on the old school timers we decided to switch to some smart bulbs. Since we have a multi ecosystem house. Android, iOS, Nest and Google Home we needed something that would work across all platforms. The Philips Hue system seemed to fit the bill.
Pros:
1. Works across all platforms.
2. Works with Nest so you geo fencing rules apply.
3. Homekit setup was easy.
4. White A19 lights provide a nice soft light.
5. A19 White bulbs aren't that expensive.
6. System works well. No crashes.
7. Hue Bridge is small and unobtrusive.
Cons:
1. Any bulbs other than white cost a small fortune.
2. Hue App can be a pain to set up across devices.
3. More an issue with Google Home. It's integration with Hue stinks!
Final thoughts. There are cheaper alternatives to the Philips Hue system. Now that we've been running this for a while we may venture out and see what's out there but overall the Hue system has been easy to set up and use. Especially given our Frankenstein house of devices! No issues or hiccups across the board. If you add a value to the ease and convenience of the setup and maintenance of the Hue system I guess it's not that far from the others at least in the white light department!
Philips has warmed the cockles of my heart. In a "playing-with-home-automation" binge, I ordered this starter kit. I wanted something that would integrate well with other home automation systems and would be expandable.
This was easy to set up. The hub can control up to 50 Philips light bulbs. Each can be programmed with different scenes, on / off times, randomization, and brightness levels. A few hours after opening the box and playing with this, I had ordered 4 more sets for friends and family members. They all love these, too. And, I ordered some color bulbs as well.
The color temperature for these lights is pleasing and comfortable. The features are excellent. I'm very pleased with this purchase.
So I was pleasantly surprised that I got all of this up and running under ten minutes! Just to help anyone out who needs clarification....you need the hub to be able to use the lightbulbs with Alexa (or whichever digital assistant). You just plug that into your router, then set up the Hue app on your phone and the Alexa app to connect it. It's actually surprisingly simple. Alexa understands me and the commands very easily without issue....extremely happy with this purchase!
Creating a smart home used to be for billionaires like Bill Gates....now it's affordable and useful enough to be a good fit for everyone! It's very nice to be able to on and off lights with just your voice and app and not having to move.
