There's a lot of debate between QLED and OLED and which one is better, etc. This all comes down to preference, of course, but I am personally thrilled with the QLED on this particular model. Our other TCL (which still works perfectly well - we simply stuck it in another room to replace a much more aging TV) had a really great picture quality on the whole, and it had been performing flawlessly for us ever since we got it. I kept looking at it and thinking, "How much better can you REALLY get? This is pretty darn good!" My husband became obsessed with all things QLED and comparing different brands - and we NEARLY got a Sony QLED in the 65" range, but ultimately went with TCL again - mainly due to price. I would have never considered TCL had we not gotten the other lower model that was relatively cheap, but I was so pleased with the performance and quality of it that I felt it was fairly trustworthy for getting a nicer (and bigger) model. I am SO glad we picked this one.
When this arrived, I was struck with how much nicer looking this one is to our other lower model TCL. The frame has more sturdy metal on and around it - and it just looks much sleeker and is made from hardier materials. It's a little heavier than your light weight plasticky ones, too (our other TCL was ridiculously light for its size, but had that "plastic" look to it - this one just looks solid and higher end).
I won't get all technical about the pixels and all that stuff, but I was skeptical that it would be just SOOOOO much noticeably better than our other TV. When we got it installed, it felt very familiar and intuitive - namely because it operates on the exact same premise as our old one does with the Roku Smart TV remote (which I LOVE - makes things SO much easier!). As for the picture and colors...well, I was simply blown away. Like, WOW. Yes, you WILL notice a huge difference between this and a lower model - especially in movies with bright colors. Sometimes the white is SO WHITE that it's blinding. Yellows, greens, blues, and bright reds are just extraordinary and mesmerizing. We watched some movies with it that we've watched before, and were struck at just HOW many details we could see that we missed the first time around. We didn't even play around or adjust anything - this was just straight out of the box. The quality and vibrancy of the colors were just simply mesmerizing and nothing short of amazing, IMO. And I wasn't expecting to be impressed with it at ALL (with the exception that I knew it would be bigger - but that's about it).
The sound quality from the TV is actually pretty good, too. My husband has tower speakers that he likes to turn on with this for movie watching, but I find those unnecessary for watching shorter daily shows and such - so I just rely on the TV speakers on the whole for most stuff and leave the towers off. You can get it nice and loud without distortions, and it doesn't sound tinny or muddy, either. It's certainly a TV that sounds well on its own if you don't want or need to invest in fancy speakers - it has a nice balance and a great range all by itself without any help.
For the price, this was a fantastic bargain for us compared to other name brands, which were much more expensive for the QLED aspects. We bought this in December, 2019, and it's now the end of February, 2020 - and we have NO complaints whatsoever. Everything works great on it, and the picture quality is simply amazing. It's a great bang for your buck when you're wanting a larger screen QLED TV but don't want to pay through the nose to get it. If you're into brighter, detailed, vivid colors in your TV experience, this one won't disappoint - it really brings your whole viewing experience into life! We love everything about it and probably will purchase another one in the near future to put in our secondary living area. It certainly gets two thumbs up from this household, and we highly recommend it!
I did a lot of research before buying this and I was still a little hesitant. I am upgrading from a 42" Magnavox 720p plasma TV I bought in 2007 for ~$800. So regardless it is a huge upgrade. But still, a lot of money to spend. I saved up for it. I researched the every living crap out of it. Look at the rtings.com ratings and review. Talking in groups on Reddit about it. The works.
Finally, I bit the bullet and bought it. The first thing I did was had my wife record me opening it because the box was a bit beat up and I was worried that it would be damaged. It wasn't though. I added the feet, set it on the floor with her help and turned it on.
Updated the software right after setting up WiFi and after it rebooted it had lost the WiFi connection info I had just put in, which was annoying. Hopefully, it was just because it wasn't fully setup yet. I really don't want to go through that again on the next update.
I then tried watching the recap video on YouTube of the Chiefs beating the Titans (and heading to the SuperBowl). That looked great. I didn't see any artifacts or issues with motion. Maybe if I looked super hard I might see something. But for regular average Joe viewing it is just fine.
I then tried Netflix... and it sucked. After doing some research, it turns out that on larger size 4k TVs you can't get away with the standard HD Netflix signal. It doesn't scale well. But as soon as I upgraded my Netflix account to the Ultra HD level it was all good in the hood. Looks amazing now. I watched "6 Underground" and "Planet Earth" Amazing picture. Fantastic brightness. Impeccable color.
Hulu and Disney+ look perfect. I haven't tested my PS4 yet, but I will next weekend. YouTube looks great, especially 4k content. Low-res content like "The Simpsons" looks great too (watched via Hulu). I tried the new live-action Aladdin movie and the HDR+ modes are awesome.
I also happen to have a Pixel 3a and tried the TCL iPQ calibration app. Basically, it makes you take two sets of 6 pictures (12 in total) of a white screen with a box on it. Align the box with the corners in the app and take the picture. I will be honest with you, it says it improved it, but it wasn't really very noticeable to me. That is literally all this app does. Don't worry if you can't get/use the app on your phone. It doesn't really help that much.
The Roku interface is fast and responsive most of the time. I had a few blips here and there with it speed-wise, but other than that it has been great. The calibration controls are extensive and I don't think it is lacking anything. Granted I have never use any professional calibration tools or anything. So I could very well just not know about it. But for normal people it is more than enough.
The sound quality is pretty good. Louder and better than my old TV (not saying much). I like how the volume control graphic is a circle that pops up in the upper right corner. It avoids covering subtitle text and other important parts of the screen which is nice.
I look forward to getting a soundbar with ARC on it. I have never had that. But that is a purchase for another day when I have researched it and saved up for it.
My next step is figuring out cable management. I will say that the power cord is extremely short, which is disappointing. Especially since I wall mounted this TV. It just barely reaches the power strip I setup just so that it could reach. I will probably find a solution that brings the power connection up to the base of the wall mount to fix this.
For the wall mount, I did the Amazon Basics Extended Arm wall mount. The one that does 26" or 28" out. I can't remember which. But that is great for me.
Overall this is a badass TV for a fantastic price. I highly recommend it.
