What I need a phone for:
1. Watch short videos
2. Read/reply email and work related docs.
3. Chat with family and co-worker
4. Do any two things I mentioned above at the same time, which is the main reason I'm buying this phone.
5. A decent phone with abilities to do most tasks that are expected on modern phone when I need it.
What I don't use phone for:
1. Play games, I have PC and consoles can do better.
2. Long battery life, I work from home and don't go out a lot, so most of time I will have it on power or I can plugin whenever I need it.
Surface duo 2 meets my requirements and I'm really happy with it. Now I can chatting and watching video together, or taking note when I have meeting.
Note: I got this with $999 when it was on discount. For $1500, I would think twice.
The bad- this phone cannot sit on any surface... none. I can't count the number of times this thing has been on a flat table or counter... a foot away from any edge, and it goes flying on to the floor by itself. You have to put a wrap on it, period. Best practice would be to store it in a basement inside of a tall box... even then, it will likely find a way into the sewer system, and eventually the center of the earth. Bluetooth sucks on most devices, but this one is particularly bad. Screen likes to randomly go black, has no sense of orientation, screen is often miscalibrated... pressing one icon opens another... this carries over to the keyboard... you spend a lot of time retyping.
The awful- device eventually ended up damaged... went online and ordered the "advanced replacement / repair" option... basically they ship you a refurb for $699 + tax, you put the old in a box with their return label and send it back... if you don't send it back they charge you the balance of a full new phone, which happens to be $856. No problem.
Refurbed phone arrives- cannot stay connected to my carrier- hours back and forth with the carrier, they blame Microsoft, Microsoft blames them. Eventually Microsoft relents and sends me another refurbed phone... I send back the first refurb, and my original using separate shipping labels they provide... UPS tracking confirms delivery of both.
At this point they charge me an additional $856 as though I haven't sent my original phone back. You call the 877 number it directs you to their website... you go to the website, it directs you to the phone number. No on answers and combination of menu options. I start calling every random number for Microsoft I can find... I think I probably hit up the SQL Server Enterprise team at one point- eventually get my case escaleted.... around 4 times... have to start over and explain to each person multiple times... English is not really an option. Eventually they agree to credit me back... but they don't... again phone and e-mails go under answered.
Nearly 3 months of calls and e-mails go by... eventually hit a person who seemed to genuinely care- was informed I would be refunded in 5-7 days, and that they would personally follow up with me. Next day I get an e-mail saying my case had been closed because I hung up on them, and they follow up with a satisfaction survey.
Anyway- no happy ending after a long-fought battle... they just took my money and ran. Going to contest the charge with Amex... we'll see. I'm about $2300 and 20+ hours into customer service phone calls over this phone. Second worst mistake of my life next to getting married. At least she just an unreasonable psychopath hell bent on destroying my life and leaving me penniless in the street... this phone might actually be trying to hurt me.
tl;dr: Buy an iPhone, a ham radio, a carrier pidgeon... literally anything else.
Another major thing to note is that if you get the phone using the payment plan that comes with the Amazon credit card make sure you fully understand the terms. The terms weren't exactly 100% clear when I bought this so it sounded like it would be simple 86$ payments monthly using the card which could then just be paid off as able. What it actually does is charge the card the ENTIRE amount and the 86$ is the monthly minimum payment to pay it off.
But I digress, the bf loves playing games on his new phone. It let's you pull up a different app on each half of the screen at the same time so you can have music on one half and a game on the other. Or just pull up a video game full screen for a tablet sized gaming screen.
