Immediately after unboxing, it all goes wrong. First of all- it was shipped in the regular box. This is fine, albeit risky, and the box was slightly damaged. Nonetheless, the tv was unharmed. We go through the trouble of mounting it, and the tv turns on and sets up without issue. Updates, signing in, downloaded apps, etc. However, not long after that, the tv freezes crashes and reboots to the TCL
logo and Google TV splash screen. Homepage is cluttered with ads and takes an unbearably long time to load, only to crash again. We stopped touching the remote just to allow the tv to figure itself out and even then it was crashing. When it settled enough to go into settings, another crash.
Mind you, the crashing and rebooting easily takes a good 8 or so seconds. Not terribly long, but incredibly frustrating to get this every single time you go into another app or try to move around the Home Screen. We had better luck using my Roku device as one of the HDMI outputs, but even if you stuck to that, you’re still likely going to get delays when even turning on the tv. Also has issues with always playing the tv speakers even when you have your sound system hooked up. You’ll have to manually mute the tv to get it to work.
The last straw was when the tv froze to the point that it wouldn’t even turn off. Had to manually unplug it. Complete crap in a box. Whether it was a processor issue or just bad luck, it was very clear that you get what you pay for. If you’re in the market for a decent tv with a good picture, do not settle for this under any circumstances. I almost feel lucky that the tv instantly crapped out so I could return it and get something better from Sony.
The bad far outweighs the good when it comes we to this television. I will never purchase a TCL ever again.
If this TV was 600 or more, I'd give it 4 stars, but at 400 currently for the 50", you can't go wrong if you know what you're getting into. I don't use any of the TV's smart features, so I can't speak to those. Appliances spying on me? Ha! I think not.
Only real complaint we have is the controller is slick and buttons small. Also would like the option to configure the streaming selection buttons.
Have no had the need to contact support for anything so far:
Only one real issue is the auto switching to gaming mode on PS5 is buggy. It would keep switching in and out of gaming mode making it impossible to play. I "fixed" it by just turning auto switching off so that feature is a bust. That being said, it does save settings across different inputs so it's not a big deal. Just thought I'd mention it. And the games do look and run beautifully.
Then I came across a strange "feature." I am used to ordering Amazon Prime movies from within the Amazon app on the TV. Search for the movie you want, click buy or rent. Authorize it and the movie is ready to run. That the way it worked with my external Roku app on my old Sony. But here, instead, you are given as prompt that says, "How to Buy or Rent this movie." When I click on it I get instructions to go to the Amazon website on my phone or PC, find the movie, pay for it, and then return to the TV and it will play. Making the a not so smart TV.
Tech support told me that is a security feature demanded by Google for purchases from Amazon (or the other way around). Either way, it was a deal breaker.
I returned this TV and purchased the TCL Roku TV. Out of the box the picture was much much better. A little fine tuning and it is excellent. And the connection to Amazon Prime works as it should. The only problem is that I had just made the jump from a 40" Sony to a 50" TCL. That's quite a leap The smallest TCL Roku TV is a 55" Another giant step.
It has taken me a couple of weeks to get used to it. But I am getting used to the Roku model.
