My 1 year old has the Summer Infant Baby Wave Digital Audio Monitor. It is much more portable and clear as well. This would be my inexpensive, yet effective choice for a new baby.
My six year old, who sleeps farthest from us, has the VTech Communications Safe and Sound Digital Audio Baby Monitor (this replaced his Sony Babycall from when he was born.) This one I do not recommend. It works just fine and is clear. However, it doesn't have a rechargeable battery to charge when you plug it in. You have to use other batteries. We just leave this plugged in in our bedroom and turn on at night. This works fine for a six year old we only need to hear at night if he needs us, but would be very annoying if we needed it during the day.
Nice design, compact, good quality, 0% interference, 0% noise, 100% clear audio, sensitive enough if placed less than 2 ft from baby.
Not so good:
Have in mind that there has to be an outlet very close to the intended location. This device is "too" digital, so it appears to be voice activated, after a silence period any crying sound must be loud enough to activate transmission, sometimes it looks like it is not working, this seems to be more from a design issue than malfunction. Effective range is probably less than 30 ft and gets worse if walls or door are on the way.
Note:
If you need a monitor like the old ones that would let you hear even baby's breathing and movements, this one may not be for you.
A lot of the negative reviews are from people that suffer from a lack a reading comprehension. This is a plug in unit only. No batteries included. You have to have access to 120v AC outlets for both units.
Very clear signal.
The out of range/transmit unit off notification beep is very handy. No wondering if we forgot to plug in the transmitting unit, or if we are out of range and didn't know it. If it's on, and quiet, it's connected.
Nice and loud speaker. No problem at all hearing baby, even 30 or 40 feet away outside.
A note on the range. I believe the published limit on it is 100ft. That is open air obviously. However, we consistently walk over to our neighbors house and hang out on his porch. The signal has to go through 2 walls, and a metal conex container, to find the receiver under a tin roof, about 130 feet away. We have good signal in our situation. It allows us to hang out with our neighbor and eat/drink/be merry without having to constantly go check on baby.
Solid product from a solid company. If it's a radio type device, I am buying it from motorola.
Top reviews from other countries
I have only given four stars for sound quality because the sound is a little tinny - but I am not sure if it is because the monitor unit is in a big room with little furniture and there is a bit of an echo or if it is the speaker itself. But it serves its purpose very well so I am unconcerned about the tinny sound.
It is so easy to use. It is just plug it in and press the power button. And if you unplug it without turning it off then when you plug it back in it turns itself on. And the good thing about having to plug it into mains is that it can never run out of battery! Though if you live in an area prone to power cuts then perhaps you should consider battery operated. It also depends how you plan to use it on whether you need a speaker unit to carry with you or one you plug into the wall. For me this works great and I know I would hear it even in another room as long as the telly isn't on. So I don't consider it a necessity to be able to carry it around with me.
The microphone doesn't have much range though, but can pick up sounds from father away if they are loud enough. Something to bear in mind if you are using it for something other than a cot or bed. In terms of the range between the two units I am very impressed. I am quite far away around the corridor and have never struggled to pick up signal like some other reviewers. But perhaps if it was plugged in downstairs then I would struggle.
Overall I would highly recommend this monitor. It does exactly what it says it does and works great. And it is one of the cheapest on the market so is great value for money. As a carer I wouldn't live without it now.
We have six pet bunnies that live in a big hutch and run in the garden. We like to think that they are well cared for, with built in lighting in their hutch, and a heater to keep them warmer in the Winter months.
Recently, a couple of them have started fighting in the early hours, so we decided to buy this monitor to keep a watchful ear over them, and so far after about seven days' use, it has worked very, very well.
Sound quality wise, this is never going to be Bose. It gives an acceptable degree of clarity, (we can hear the birds chirping early in the morning when the outside mike kicks in), but very low level sounds like a baby slightly moving in the night, or in our case the bunnies eating and so on are satisfactorily muted, so you won't get woken by any 'unimportant' sounds.
We would have perhaps liked a bit more volume as our unit is on full most of the time, but at the end of the day this is a baby monitor, and a crying child would easily wake a sleeping adult, so put any fears you may have to rest. It's fine!
Setup is a doddle. I had ours working within two minutes out of the box. Range is not too bad either.
The only other think worth noting is that both the transmitter (mike) and receiver (speaker) are part of the plug, so there is no easy way to get the mike or speaker closer to you or the child if you don't have a handy 13A socket nearby. You would have to use a trailing extension lead.
That said, pickup is great. The £20 was very well spent, and I wholeheartedly commend this baby monitor to the house, flat or bungalow.
Steve.
We already had a safety 1st set with 2 parent units that have the sound view lights that are analog 40mhz(ish), they were very staticy and suffered from interference even in a rural area.
This Motorola digital monitor uses DECT technology, just like my cordless phone.
What this means for you is that nobody can eavesdrop on your monitors clearly broadcast radio transmissions. It doesn't interfere with WiFi.
It also means that this monitor doesn't blast out random noises.
It has an excellent noise filter that doesn't mute but reduces the child's rooms ambient noise so you can actually hear your baby, not the fan in their room.
It has a night light built into the nursery unit, which emits a soft orange glow that doesn't distrupt your night vision.
The parent unit also has lights similar to other brands, a semi circle of lights that progress from green to red indicate the volume of the child's room even if you have the sounds muted.
There is no wires, the base and parent unit simply plug directly into any power outlet, they also cannot run on batteries.
I like this because if you really want a wire, you can use a thin extension cord otherwise is a very clean looking non childish looking unit.
*edit* this set was broken by November. The units just could no longer connect.
The company that actually made this was not Motorola, but some other company that wants you to ship this device back at your own expense, with no guarantees you'll get your unit back or anything at all.
