    Just what I needed
I've been toying with the idea of getting a set of active noise canceling headphones for a while. Both my wife and I are having to fly more for our jobs, so I can certainly justify this expense. While I hadn't directly tested anything else, I've read reviews both at Amazon and other places for a number of different headphones. The predecessor to these, Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones generally scored well in the reviews, and seemed favored even over the venerable BOSE Quiet Comfort models, the several low rated reviews about sound leakage gave me pause.Seeing these supposedly new and improved versions recently come to market, I decided to take a chance with the hope that this one negative would be fixed for what is otherwise an excellent product.I've not been exposed to the original to know first hand how bad the "sound leakage" issue is, but it is something I wanted to test for. I can say that, when I have my Ipod cranked up full (almost at a painful level) and the ANC turned on, it is pretty easy for someone outside to hear what is playing, particularly when there's not a lot of noise in the area. However, in a more "real world" test, I had my wife listening with them while we took a trip with the kids in our minivan. While not up to aircraft levels, the van can generate a decent amount of noise, especially at speed and on noisy asphalt. In this case, I had her turn it up as loud as she could comfortably do. I managed to barely be able to hear something from the headphones, but not even to the point that I could tell what she was listening to. That test was enough to allay my concerns about the "sound leakage" issue as a practical matter. My wife greatly appreciated using the headphones on our road trip and found them very effective and damping down the road and engine noise. For the most part, our trips don't happen at the same time, but I can already tell that, if we are traveling together, I'll be adding a second set to our house hold. While not as good sounding as some of my dedicated over the ear heaphones for music, especially with the ANC on, the sound quality is still well more than acceptable and a fair compromise to go along with the ANC capability. As is typical of the technology, most of the sound reduction comes at the lower frequencies, with higher vocal level frequencies getting much less attentuation. These will knock down the low level engine rumblings, but not silence a conversation. As for the package in general, it's very simple and elegant. The battery compartment takes a single AAA battery and it is easy to rotate the cover on the right earpiece to expose and replace the battery. While it doesn't lock, it is firm enough that I don't think there's going to be an issue with accidentally opening the battery compartment. The headphones use a standard 3.5mm stereo connection and the package comes with both a short (good for having a player in your hand or on a belt clip) and longer cable that would be suitable plugging into a set of desktop speakers and allowing you to move about your desk. There are also 1/4" adapter plugs for use with a typical home stereo/AVR as well as the typical two pronged airline connector. The case has a zippered internal pocket to hold all of these, along with extra AAA batteries (one Energizer even comes with the package). The case is pretty compact, which is good for using with a carry on bag. Even so, there is sufficient room to easily hold my Ipod 5G 60GB inside. There's space still for something a little wider and a good bit longer, so I suspect an Ipod Touch or Zune would fit with no trouble. The case itself is pretty sturdy with heavy inserts in the back, front, and sides to hold the case's shape. When I made my purchase, the price difference between the new model and the old one was effectively the same. Even as of this writing, there's only a net $10 difference. With that in mind, if you have looked at the previous generation, I see no reason to get it anymore. This unit incorporates at least two year's worth of improvements over the original and comes in at a very competitive pricepoint, especially compared to BOSE and some of the other high end ANC headphones.

I consider myself a budget audiophile, and I'm always looking for the best deal on good quality sound, i.e. at home I have Polk speakers because they sound amazing and don't cost a fortune. So, when my coworker next to me showed up to work one day with a brand new pair of Bose QC15 headphones, I almost dropped my jaw. I had listened to them in the store, but I knew they were $300 and didn't seem to me to be worth the money. So I asked him to borrow them for a little bit and I was amazed at how all the noise in the office disappeared and the music appeared to sound much better. Then my company moved us to a new floor with an open floor plan where we all sit out in the open together. My desk, unfortunately, got located directly below a noisy air conditioning unit and there is no drop ceiling over my desk. Finally, the noise canceling headphones were a must. I was ready to drop $300 on the bose when I decided to do some google research and see what's out there. I stumbled upon these Audio Technica headphones. As a DJ, I knew the Audio Technica brand well, they make my wireless microphone system that I use for all my weddings. Their mic system has NEVER failed me, so I knew they make good quality stuff at reasonable prices (their mic system was $100-200 cheaper then the competitors).

Anyway, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered these. They arrived the next day with my $3.50 overnight shipping upgrade on Prime, and I couldn't be happier. These headphones sound amazing. I hear new details in all my music that I never heard before. They also do a perfect job of making all my gabby co-workers disappear. It's actually kind of funny to watch their mouths move and not hear any sound coming out... And that noisy AC unit? Gone!

As many other reviewers have mentioned, these headphones do have a LOT of sound leakage. If you like to crank your music up, others may hear you. I must admit though you do have to turn it up pretty loud. These definitely won't work if you're in the same QUIET room as someone who is trying to sleep or read a book. And that's where the Bose headphones win out in this category. With or without music playing, the Bose are SILENT. You can't hear any sound coming out of them. However, when you're in a noisy office or a noisy airplane, the noise will drown out most of the sound leakage. In addition, with no music playing, the Bose win hands down on cancelling out noise. So, I would say if sound leakage and noise cancellation are your primary goals, you may want to spring the extra $169 for the Bose QC15s. But, if you're an audiophile and want your music to sound amazing, you need these Audio Technicas.

I compared several tracks side by side with my co workers Bose QC15 headphones and my Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B headphones, and hands down the Audio Technicas win out in every type of music - classical, disco, pop music, rock. I didn't try hip hop - because frankly my ears refuse to be polluted with that stuff. In addition, the Bose headphones are not nearly as loud as the Audio Technica so you have to turn them all the way up to get the same volume as the Audio Technica ones. As a DJ I also like to play a lot of house music, and I made a new demo tape with these headphones on. They just sound amazing in any circumstance.

Accessory wise, the Bose is the obvious winner, they provide a headphone splitter, as well as an inline mic/audio control for your iphone. The case on the Bose is a bit more compact then the Audio Technica. In fact, if it's one thing I had to complain about, these suckers are big, and cause my laptop bag to bulge out a little. Comfort wise, the Audio Technicas feel better to me. When I put the Bose in and turn them on, they seem to apply too much pressure to my ear drum. That is something I'm sure you get used to. That's probably why the noise canceling works better on the Bose. I think the padding on the Bose is a little more comfortable then the Audio Technica's, but not enough to make me forget the discomfort in my ear drums from the pressure on the Bose.

UPDATED to my review: The power switch shorted out after about a month of use, you have to jiggle the power switch of the noise canceling to get them to work properly in stereo. I contacted Amazon and was promptly refunded my money. I will order another pair and hope they work out better this time.

For $139 these are an absolute steal and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to everyone I see. Here's a summary of my review:

    Sound Quality:
    Audio Technica - 5/5
    Bose - 3/5

    Build Quality
    Audio Technica - 3/5
    Bose - 4/5
Note: I lowered this one notch because the power switch on my AT headphones started shorting out.

    Accessories/carring case:
    Audio Technica - 3/5
    Bose - 5/5

    Noise Canceling without music:
    Audio Technica - 3/5
    Bose - 5/5

    Noise Cancelling with music:
    Audio Technica - 4/5
    Bose - 5/5

    Sound Leakage:
    Audio Technica - 2/5
    Bose - 5/5

    Comfort:
    Audio Technica - 4/5
    Bose - 3/5
Note: The padding on the Bose is better, but the ear pressure is less extreme on the AT's

    Overall
    Audio Technica - 4/5
    Bose - 3/5
(BTW I weighed sound quality the highest in my review, otherwise I would say it's a tie. I only have to turn these things half the volume as I do on the Bose to get the same amount of sound, and the music just sounds THAT much better)

    Model: AUD ATH-ANC7BVerified Purchase
After comparing many headphones online, and reading dozens of reviews on Amazon and elsewhere (including on technical and audiophile sites), I purchased the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B Headphones. Among the many challenges in selecting headphones is the overwhelming quantity of information, much of it apparently conflicting. I was also struck by the emotion surrounding headphones, and the readers who either "loved" or "hated" a particular set of headphones. So many comments seemed "black or white" on this topic.

My review leans a bit more toward the grey: I like these headphones and think that they're a good value for the price. I purchased them on Amazon and received them quickly, as is always my experience with Amazon. Audio-Technica's black zippered headphone case is superb: rigid (for protection), roomy (facilitating the addition of backup batteries and other small items), and quite professional looking. The case also incorporates a small zippered compartment to hold batteries, adapters, etc. Of course, these are big over-the-ear headphones, so the case is necessarily rather large itself, which can be a factor for many frequent travelers.

The headphones themselves have a removable cable, an excellent innovation. If you use them on a plane or in other often-cramped quarters, you'll find that headphone cords can catch on the arms of seats, on seatbelts, table trays, or the countless other hazards posed by air travel today. When the cord is permanently attached to the headphone, an inadvertent "yank" on the cord could break the entire unit. With this design, a yank on the cord would probably just unplug it from the headphones, avoiding any damage. Even better, the headphones ship with an extra cord, so you can replace a damaged cord "on the fly"....

The battery compartment is easily accessible via a rotating/sliding door on the right headphone. The power switch -- located on the left headphone -- is well designed and functional, easy to operate by touch alone (i.e., when you're wearing the headphones).

One word about batteries: these headphones use a single AAA battery, which keeps weight and cost manageable. I didn't run any controlled tests but a single battery worked for my entire trip and is still working now that I'm home. However, the User's Manual warns strongly against using rechargeable batteries, which is disappointing. I use rechargeable batteries all the time, and travel with a small recharger. Over the long term, rechargeable batteries are much cheaper than repeatedly buying disposable batteries, and are far more environmentally friendly (because you use the same battery dozens or even hundreds of time, instead of throwing it into a landfill).

The sound quality is the most important factor on any set of headphones, of course. I am not qualified to rate these headphones in a technical manner, so I recommend reviewing the comments of others in this area for technical specifications. I WOULD say, though, that the noise-cancelling feature was quite effective, especially on an airplane or in other noisy environments. I first used these on a noisy, crowded 16-hour coach-class flight to Hong Kong, and they worked quite well. Even with the headphone power off, I could hear the airplane audio acceptably. (Some headphones don't work at all without power, so when the battery dies, the headphones cease to function. The Audio-Technica headphones work either way.) With the headphone power on, the difference was wonderful and a bit startling in its effectiveness.

The noise-cancelling feature allowed me to listen to shows at a lower volume that is usual for me on an airplane, because of the elimination of extraneous noise. The lower volume is certainly good for my long-term hearing. It also allowed me to hear every word of dialog on the movies, which is not always easy for me (as my hearing may not be world-class!).

In other words, these headphones have many positive attributes and I'm pleased with my purchase. A few downsides: the "bleed-through" noted by other reviewers is a real phenomenon. In other words, people sitting near you may hear a bit of noise from your headphones, and that could be an annoyance to some in tight quarters. The sound is not overwhelming, but it's definitely there. If you need absolute quiet around you (such as in a library), it may be worth testing other headphones. However, in most situations (airplane, trains, etc.), the background noise is considerable anyway, and any bleed-through will be inaudible or irrelevant.

The other factor which concerns me involves the airplane connector jack shipped with the headphones. The connector appears to be high-quality (it's gold-plated, as noted in the headphone literature), and allows you to connect the headphone's single plug to the two-pronged insert used on many airplanes. The connector worked well, snapping in firmly to the headphone and the airplane seat. However, in the first 30 minutes of my 16-hour flight, the connector broke (!) when I stood up. Admittedly, I should have been more careful standing up, but it was only a gentle "tug" on the headphones and I saw -- to my horror -- that my sole headphone adapter was broken. I was facing the horror of a 16-hour nonstop flight with an inability to use my brand-new headphones.

Fortunately, I saw that the cheap headphones supplied by the airlines used a similar adapter, so I unplugged it from their headphones and put it on mine. It worked reasonably well, which was a relief. In my travels throughout Asia on that trip, I checked in a half-dozen stores (in Singapore and Bangkok) and was unable to find a replacement adapter. But the airline adapter was sufficient for the rest of the trip.

One very reassuring factor: when I got home, I emailed Audio-Technica about the broken adapter. Their answer was virtually instantaneous and extremely helpful: they immediately mailed me multiple replacement adapters at no charge. EXCELLENT customer service!

One last thought: as with many such headphones, these do not have a volume control. They are either on or off. Based on the suggestions of others, I combined my headphone acquisition with the purchase of a Koss VC20 "Remote Volume Control" -- a very inexpensive addition. This small item plugs into the end of the headphone cord, between the cord and the audio source. (Despite the use of the term "remote" in its name, it is a wired connection.) The Koss VC20 allows easy and convenient volume control and considerably boosts the available volume of the headphones. The VC20 does not need batteries, which is also a real convenience.

On balance, I like these headphones a great deal and I recommend them. They work well, making long trips much more bearable, and the Audio-Technica customer service is superb.

Overall an amazing pair of soundproof headphones for the price and for what I need.
    Pros
-Reduce the sound very well. It reduces about 90% of everything but when your actually listening to something you cannot hear anything,
-Have a very good sound quality and won't deduct on mobile devices because there's a batterie in the headphone.
-Very comfortable listening experience is amazing
-Fits my ears nicely but idk if it would be different for others

    Cons
-The metal that extends the size of the headphone seems kinda cheap
-The cord is kinda standard kinda thought it would be threaded or higher quality.
Sometimea there is a poping sound going into the headphones but if you just unplug the headphones and turn them off then put them back on it seems to fix it.

Overall an amazing pair of headphones to replace my razer krakens for my phone
