Purchase options and add-ons
Many of Britain's four million Victorian and Edwardian houses were shoddily built and often require 'essential repairs'. Problems such as rising damp, timber decay, bowed roofs and subsidence are well-known, but at what point do these common problems become major defects? Forget 'makeovers': this easy-to-use manual shows where to look for danger signs, what's normal and what isn't, and how to fix common defects. Equipped with this book, you can talk the same language as builders and property professionals, and this new edition includes updated rules and regulations as well as guidance on the latest environmental issues

Lots of lovely photos in the book to enhance the text, as you would expect with a Haynes' manual.
The manual, like all Haynes Guides, covers the most likely tasks you'll want to tackle yourself and some you thought you couldn't. It has clear and concise instructions on a number of key tasks like repairing Sash Windows, Installing a Fireplace, replacing floorboards and repairing roofs, gutters and addressing damp, cracking to brickwork and ceilings etc. Its also interesting from a historic point of view and touches on why houses of the period were designed the way they were and talks in some detail about the evolution of the home through the periods to the Edwardian era. Personally, I'd have liked to have had a bit more information on the historic aspects especially period furnishings and decor but I guess this isn't really what this book is intended for as it is focused on maintenance and repair really.
All in all, if you are looking to buy a period home or already have one and want to revive some period character then this book is a great investment. It's also just a fascinating read in it's own right. Highly recommend it.
