Purchase options and add-ons

Many of Britain's four million Victorian and Edwardian houses were shoddily built and often require 'essential repairs'. Problems such as rising damp, timber decay, bowed roofs and subsidence are well-known, but at what point do these common problems become major defects? Forget 'makeovers': this easy-to-use manual shows where to look for danger signs, what's normal and what isn't, and how to fix common defects. Equipped with this book, you can talk the same language as builders and property professionals, and this new edition includes updated rules and regulations as well as guidance on the latest environmental issues

Very informative book for people interested in restoring an old Victorian. Mostly pictures of exteriors. Covers different time periods and different parts of the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely present for a new owner of a Victorian house
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 26, 2024
Although not the thickest tome, this 'manual' provides lots of interesting and informative points for the new Victorian house owner. It isn't myself but I got to look through it whilst visiting. The interior woodwork of the house was stripped orange pine. It was good to read that this wasn't original and that the Victorians would have had the pine wood painted, and only left the more expensive wood in the house to its natural colour. Gave my friend confidence to start covering all the ugly orange pine once again.
Lots of lovely photos in the book to enhance the text, as you would expect with a Haynes' manual.

If you have a Victorian era home then you need this book. The history is fascinating but the advice on repair and restoration is excellent. Just wish I’d had it 30 years ago!

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful if you have a period house
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 21, 2024
My house is around 1910 and starting to show its age in parts. Not being gifted with much DIY experience, this book is a useful guide to how to manage and maintain a period house. Useful either for those of a DIY bent or as a guide to what needs doing generally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for restoration or repair
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 4, 2019
I've loved reading this manual and in fact I pretty much read it all the way through from the day it arrived. I'm sure I'll refer back to it time and again for inspiration and guidance on repairs.

The manual, like all Haynes Guides, covers the most likely tasks you'll want to tackle yourself and some you thought you couldn't. It has clear and concise instructions on a number of key tasks like repairing Sash Windows, Installing a Fireplace, replacing floorboards and repairing roofs, gutters and addressing damp, cracking to brickwork and ceilings etc. Its also interesting from a historic point of view and touches on why houses of the period were designed the way they were and talks in some detail about the evolution of the home through the periods to the Edwardian era. Personally, I'd have liked to have had a bit more information on the historic aspects especially period furnishings and decor but I guess this isn't really what this book is intended for as it is focused on maintenance and repair really.

All in all, if you are looking to buy a period home or already have one and want to revive some period character then this book is a great investment. It's also just a fascinating read in it's own right. Highly recommend it.
