Product Description
About Harris Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth
Harris Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is composed of 100% ground freshwater DE, with no additives. The product is made of the naturally occuring fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of algae that forms in freshwater. These remains are ground up into a soft, fine white powder that carries many different uses. It's chemical free and completely safe to use around children and pets.
Harris Diatomaceous Earth is listed with the Organic Minerals Research Institute (OMRI) for organic use. It's packaged in a 1/2 lb puffer bottle that allows for easy application of a fine dusting of powder.
For every ten dollars in profit we receive for Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade, we have pledged to donate $1 to the Etowah Valley Humane Society (EVHS), a private non-profit organization that saves thousands of animals every year. Based in Cartersville, GA a short drive from the PF Harris manufacturing plant, EVHS aims to prevent cruelty, relieve suffering, and provide humane treatment for all animals in need. The organization actively works to eliminate root causes of suffering and acts as an educational resource for the community, with the main goal being to find a great home for animals in its custody. Below are a few of the impressive stats showing the impact EVHS has had on local animal lives in recent years:
- Rescued over 13,000 lives from Bartow County Animal Control since 2010
- Helped increase the number of live animals pulls from Bartow County Animal Control from 69/month to 207/month - a 300% increase
- Assisted in decreasing the Bartow County euthanasia rate six years in a row
Harris’ own Chief Financial Officer, Ed Brush, has been involved with the society for years. Seeing an opportunity to help a local organization doing so much good, PF Harris partnered with EVHS in an effort to combat animal cruelty and find deserving pets a loving home. We hope you will find value in our Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth while knowing that 10% of profits are going toward saving the lives of pets in Bartow County, Georgia.
About PF Harris
Our Story
Problem solving has a long heritage at PF Harris. In 1924, two years after its founding, the company tackled the Calvin Coolidge White House, which had been overrun for years by roaches and water bugs. Harris’s product was so successful in eliminating the scourge that he was described on the front page of the Washington Times as a "vermin slayer" who has just fought a decisive, winning battle with a horde of cockroaches which infested the lower regions of the Executive Mansion.
Over the course of the next few months Harris took “his final feast” to dozens of government buildings, including the Senate Office Building, the Department of Justice, the Supreme Court and Walter Reed Hospital. Success followed success: Each superintendent of the various buildings was highly satisfied with the results.
The company today stays nimble enough to respond to changing market demands, leading the way in the development of numerous products, including natural insect repellents like Swamp Gator and Swamp Gnat which repel biting insects without using deet. Beyond the products it sells, Harris helps customers find easy and economical solutions to pest problems through helpful labeling, instructive videos and personal advice.
It’s a brand with a reliable past and an innovative future. PF Harris is America’s oldest EPA-registered company. With more than 55 products, the company provides solutions to treat everything from roaches and bed bugs to scorpions and stink bugs.

Works great for ants. Sprinkled it around where the ants were and those buggers are gone! I feel much better using it in the kitchen around dishes and food than a chemical and no bad smell. Works very well, and is natural and safe. I like it.

Because of ant's excavations under my patio, I've removed all pavers, added sand and put them back down, twice. Enough is enough.
The ants are pretty small, about 1/8" (3mm) long and can be found all around my foundation, yard perimeter & driveway. I've poured some high-priced liquid concentrates (diluted per directions) around the house, and other locations. It didn't seem to help, so opted to try a gel.
Amazon reviews were both good & bad for the same product, so I bought one Hot Shot Ultra Clear Roach & Ant Gel Bait and one Syngenta 68078 Advion Singular Tube Ant Gel Lure to compare.
The Hot Shot gel seemed to get a lot of yawns from the ants - they seem to be uninterested, although the next days, some of it was gone.
Advion got a lot of attention. Groups of up to a dozen or more immediately clustered around the small, pea-sized blobs I put down. The next day, the Advion was gone from all locations.
While hoping for an immediate end to the Advion-treated ants, that didn't happen. 3 days later, I'm still putting it down next to the ant hills and they continue to take it away. More hills appeared today, after a light rain yesterday.
Since it's getting attention, I'll buy another 1 oz. tube and hope for the best. Maybe the nest has multiple queens, and I haven't gotten to them yet.

9/11/22 Follow up
Although the number of patio anthills reduced, the ants continue to thrive. So, I ordered more stuff to try.
To summarize my efforts:
1. tried Hot Shot clear gel - ants ignored it.
2. Used one tube of Advion for a week or more - ants took away all I put down, but they kept coming back.
3. Put down Terro bait traps which were ignored.
4. Put down Terro liquid which resulted in a noticeable reduction in the number for ants around my driveway, but not the patio. Different species?
5. Sprinkled Harris Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth on patio & around foundation and driveway. No apparent results yet (3 days), but I read it may take from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. Dangerous stuff to inhale.
My patio ants don't seem to be affected by the liquid & gels used so far. Keeping my fingers crossed re the diatomaceous earth.
Next efforts will include Borax/peanut butter mix, vinegar, then . . . ?

Update 9/23/22
Success at last.
After sprinkling moderate applications of DE (Harris Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth) on/around the patio anthills & trails, the patio ants have disappeared. The very few stragglers that appear seem to be coming in from under the adjacent chimney chase which was hard to get to, but I'll put some down as well as I can. There are also no visible signs of ants on/around the driveway.
There is still moderate ant activity in the rock border around the back yard and other areas of the house foundation where I lighted sprinkled the DE. A heavier application will be soon applied.
Re a concern I have about using the DE:
I have two dogs who are always snuffling around the yard to check out new smells. Inhalation of DE is very dangerous - it can cause breathing issues from nose, throat, lung irritation, to even destroying tissue. Warnings are on the container. The dogs were monitored closely to keep them away from the patio. Fortunately, a few days later, a light rain seemed to dilute the DE to the point of appearing to be gone. But I'm guessing it simply helped to move the DE into spaces between the pavers. The biggest reduction of ants seemed to be AFTER the rain. Reports I've read say water won't deactivate the DE - it's still active/potent but can't be seen. And the dogs are paying no special attention to the patio.
Hopefully, this has cured my patio problem and repaving won't be necessary again.
I can’t speak to if it works, because I didn’t see bugs when I got it and I still haven’t seen any after applying.
