The remote setup will ask you different questions as to how you watch TV and guesses what devices you use. Then sets it up to turn on only the devices used for that function. Example: To watch TV, it sets the HDMI input, it turns on my receiver, the TV and the Cable Box. If I want to switch to the Shield to watch Netflix, Prime, Youtube TV, Youtube, etc., I just click one button and it turns on the Shield, turns off the Cable box and switches the HDMI AVI Input. When ready to power down, just hit the Power button and it turns everything that is on, off. One button all on, one button all off.
It takes a little getting used to what buttons are assigned to different features during setup. Mainly relating to the Shield. "Exit" is the back one screen button. Home takes you to the Home screen (obvious). Other buttons work as you would assume - fast forward, pause, select, etc.
For the remote to work with my Nvidia Shield, I had to purchase a FLIRC USB dongle (search Amazon -$22). Since the Shield is Bluetooth connected by default, the FLIRC allows it to operate as an IR device. As long as there is a direct line of sight to the dongle, it works great. I have an external drive plugged into the Shield for extra storage and sometimes have another external drive plugged in to watch downloaded movies. Since there are only 2 USB ports on the Shield, I purchased a 4 port USB hub (Anker 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub $8) to plug my movie drive into and also the FLIRC USB. Plus, the hub makes it easier to have the FLIRC pointing outward for the Harmony Remote.
During setup on the Harmony, treat the FLIRC as a device. Don't add the Shield as a device on Harmony - just FLIRK. PRIOR to using the FLIRC USB, plug it into your computer to activate it and get the latest firmware and software updates. AFTER you do that, you can plug the USB into your Shield (in my case, the hub). Set the FLIRC to Nvidia Shield during setup. I ended up Googling FLIRC setup for Nvidia Shield and also Googled setting up FLIRC on Harmony 655 Remote. It's not hard, just a little confusing (for me).
I haven't gone back into setup to custom program any buttons. No need currently. I plan on canceling my Cable TV and replace it with YouTube TV (which I love). Then I will go back onto my computer and delete Cable from my remote.
Prepare to spend about 30 minutes or so programming the remote. Give yourself a little time to get used to using the remote. The buttons on the remote are tactile - you can feel the different shapes in the dark to use the remote easily. The remote also is backlit if you move it or pick it up. Stays lit long enough to see the buttons, then turns off.
I'm very happy with the Harmony 655 and would recommend it to anyone that uses several devices while watching TV.
For example. I have a 4K TV but my receiver does not output 4K video, only 1080p. This is only an issue when I am watching 4K movies on my 4K/Blu-ray player because almost all my broadcast video is only 1080p. But this remote allows me to set the “watch movie” button (or other buttons of your choice) so that the 4K/Blu-Ray player HDMI cable goes directly into my TV, bypassing the receiver so I get 4K resolution on my TV. And because my TV has an optical audio output, and my receiver has an optical audio input, I have programmed only the sound to come out of the TV via the optical audio output and directly into the receiver. This way I get 4K video AND full digital audio that is controlled by the receiver, and not the TV. This is a VERY unusual way to set up your A/V system, but this remote has no problem doing it. And when I want to watch regular cable TV that is only 1080p, I have it programmed (as would make sense) so that the cable box HDMI goes directly into the receiver, and the receiver's HDMI cable goes into a different HDMI input on the TV. And the BEST THING is that the remote makes all these input and output changes with only 1 button to push. And if you know how to use a computer, it is very user-friendly software.
The main issue with this is the antiquated setup software required to get the remote initialized and set up. You cannot use the remote without plugging it into a desktop and setting it up using their myharmony software. Problem being, their software has not been updated since Windows 7 and does not function properly with Windows 10. You get to the point where you need to set up activities for the remote and the software wants to use a popup windows to create those activities, but Windows 10 cannot recognize this popup window so your app is effectively frozen at that point because you cannot escape the missing popup window or select anything below it which you can still see. Others have suggested running the app in windows compatibility mode to get it to work. This did not work for me. Instead I could only get it to work on an existing Windows 7 virtual machine that I had available.

So, I did the research and found this Logitech Harmony Universal remote that took the place of all the remotes in the picture (yes, including my portable air conditioner, the tiny white remote in the upper left...batteries were going as well as the buttons. So having the Logitech able to replace this also has been an added unexpected bonus). Can't be happier.
Pros:
- Great to have one remote for everything.
- 3 main (most used) configuration with the 3 buttons at the top. Once set up, it will automatically turn on all applicable devices for that button (eg. TV and proper TV setting, receiver, additional speakers all with one button, others less used configurations can be set up and scrolled through to via the remotes screen feature).
- 4 additional "customable" buttons should there be something missing. i.e. DVD/Blu-ray eject button. An eject button is no where on the remote and at first, I was frustrating on trying to figure out how to eject a disc, until I figured out these buttons are where I could set the eject button to.
- LOVE the intuitive "Help/Troubleshoot" assistant button. When switching from one set up configuration to another, occasionally one device may not turn off/on as is should. A quick click of this button will do an auto-fix of any issues and then asks you to confirm if it has fixed the issue. Usually one click fixes everything. So easy.
- Ergonomically nice to hold in the hand. Buttons are placed well for those that are used the most and easily reachable by thumb.
CONS (a few, but I can live with):
- Price. This isn't your cheap Radioshack (are they still around?) $20 remote, that will probably break within a year. You know the kind, not very customable or lacking devices it will operate for. This remote gave me a bit of "sticker shock", but I've loved Logitech products in the past and one usually gets what they pay for, so decided to splurge. I'm looking to have this SOLE remote for a very long time.
- Set up. There's a need to set up on a PC/Phone an account with Logitech in order to operate the unit. It asks various questions and is intuitive once you enter in the model numbers for each of your devices (had to go scrambling to find all of them, but that's not the unit's fault). Once all have been entered, it does take a bit to figure out in one's head the proper configurations/access/set up so the device will know where to go and what to turn on/off. The app does ask the appropriate questions to steer you in the right direction to configure, but there is room for error if not entered fully and correctly, which then may cause frustrations down the road. The elderly or those who may not be that tech savvy (as mentioned above 99% of my household), may have a little trouble with this part, so additional assistance may be required. Once everything has been set up in the app and synced to the remote, every works like a breeze.
- remote button lights and microscopic symbols/letters/numbers below keys . I'm not sure if it's just my unit, but there appears to be back lighting to the keys which is great especially if accessing in a darkened home theatre surrounding. However, the brightness is so dim, it barely registers as being on. I've sent a message to their tech support, to see if there's an issue or if there is a way to adjust brightness settings, however, so far haven't heard back, nor found anything online to allow for adjusting the back light. Also, any symbol/number/letter underneath the buttons is so incredibly tiny that you'd need a magnifying glass just to be able to read, forget about trying to see them in a darkened home theatre or if your getting on in years like I am, makes it impossible to see. I know with the amount of buttons this unit has, real estate on the remote is at a premium....however, I think these should be improved on future models.
Otherwise, LOVE this remote and definitely recommend.

Once you set it up using my harmony software on the computer it is quite easy to use, once you get used to the functions and different buttons on it it's a doddle, It is much better than the cheaper all in one remotes out there, I found them quite limited.
