The Korin Japanese Can opener is a lever-type can opener (CO) that takes heavy inspiration from the classic P-38 CO but scales that up in every way. Now providing a larger cutting blade and better handling, you can quickly and easily open the average can with ease. Made in Japan, it reflects their craftsmanship and high-quality materials that are up to use and some abuse. The product information says this weighs almost 5 Oz. but as a whole, there is a distinct heftiness that you can only personally experience that exudes the engineering that went into this. There is also a bottle opener, but I rarely use capped bottles.
There is one minor problem – this can opener works best with normal and large-sized cans. With the smaller, flatter cans like those for tuna or pet food, you will have to hold it off an edge of a table just provide the clearance for it.
No moving parts to rust or wear down – pending you can at least wipe down the cutting blade. It works without electrical power. A generous, comfortable, grip that will have you opening every can with ease regardless of hand size. You may not have put much thought into a CO but someone has to bring you the last one you will ever need.

Perfect for stashing away "just in case"!
You operate it very similarly to the old military p-38 can openers, however instead of gripping it with just your fingers, it's big enough to hold a lot more comfortably in your hand, and makes it easier to apply the force needed to cut into the can. It would probably be helpful to someone elderly or handicapped, who is having trouble with their hand strength.
When I make chili it involves opening several cans of beans, tomatoes, and green chiles, and this can opener goes through them so fast you won't believe it. Once you get a rhythm going it can take less time to open a can than it does to pour out the contents.
This is also good for cans that are too big or heavy to use an electric opener for.
This thing also has no moving parts to seize up and stop it from working.
Finally, it also has a bottle opener in it's design, which is helpful.

One never knows when you're going to need to open a can when you don't have access to electricity. I've been buying can openers that run along the lines of this one. It is very sturdy. The metal is strong and isn't going to bend when you're trying to puncture a can. Because it doesn't have two parts coming together to cut open a can, no food can get caught anywhere that's difficult to clean out.
The shape of it is easy to grip with arthritic hands and fingers (my achy hands and fingers can attest to this). Even though it does take a modicum of strength to puncture a can, it doesn't take more than my wrists and thumb can handle despite chronic tendonitis. I was expecting pain; there was none.
I'm a small person, 5 feet tall, and I have small hands. The can opener looks initially like it would be too big for me to use but it's not. It's absolutely fine.
The blade is big so it takes less time to open a can than it would with a smaller P38 or even a P51. There is a bit of a knack to angling the part of the opener closest to you, towards your body so you have leverage against the can rim to push the blade down.
The can opener is shaped like a big capital "O". You grasp the outer edge of the "O" with your fingers; this is the handle. The bit of the "O" that rests against your palm is rolled, so there are no edges against your skin. That makes it quite comfortable. The same can't be said about the part of the handle that sits under your fingers. While the edge isn't sharp, it isn't rolled, so it's not comfortable. It's doable, though.
This is solely a right-handed can opener. If you're left handed and are not able to teach your right hand to adapt easily, this opener is probably not for you. I can't see a way that someone could push that blade into the can lid (while pointing the can opener towards you) without the pressure of a thumb...unless you have VERY strong wrists.
Because it only has the one blade, there isn't a grip that's going to start slipping on can edges after a couple of years. It might get blunt after a long period of use, but honestly, I don't know of any blade that doesn't. This is great for camping and power outages. The bright colour makes it harder to lose. I keep it in its box so I don't get poked by its pokey bit when rummaging around in the drawer. If you're interested in using less electricity, getting back to basics, having things of quality that aren't going to break down or break apart, then I highly recommend this can opener.
