Brooklyn-based design studio Workstead masterfully combines traditional inspiration with contemporary elegance.
Workstead designs one-of-a-kind interiors and pieces that balance beauty with necessity, and this book presents a special blend of their tour-de-force historic renovations and innovative yet elegant new constructions. Over the past decade, the multidisciplinary design firm has earned rapid and wide acclaim for both their residential interiors as well as for larger-scale projects, such as the Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn and the Rivertown Lodge in Hudson, New York. In all their projects, Workstead considers both clients and community, working with local artisans to create meticulously crafted modern interiors, architecture, and furniture designs inflected by history.
As T: The New York Times Style Magazine put it, Workstead “are known as sophisticated pack rats who surround themselves with objects that have a story to tell,” and described their collective design philosophy as “a cozy, updated version of early Americana, with wood plank floors and a mix of vintage and refined custom-built furniture pieces that are almost Scandinavian in their restraint.”

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Having noticed the firm’s projects in various publications, Ren was impressed by Workstead’s ability to create unfussy and evocative spaces in spite of existing buildings’ constraints. He tapped the design studio, whose first monograph will be published by Rizzoli in September, to infuse his new home with personality he felt unsure of conjuring on his own. 'I would say David is very confident and caring about how he wants to live,' counters Workstead cofounder Robert Highsmith. 'In some ways, he’s a step ahead of us.'” —ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST
"Workstead has been designing interiors for residential and hospitality projects since its founding in 2009, creating interiors that feel restrained—but never too spare—allowing the craftsmanship of individual furnishings to really shine. The book takes the reader through 10 homes that they’ve contributed to over the years, but leaves space to showcase the firm’s lighting manufacture, where artisans create otherworldly designs like the Orbit chandelier and Chamber pendant." —ROBB REPORT
"Fans of the Brooklyn-based Workstead —a multidisciplinary design firm whose meteoric rise began with the completion of the borough’s Wythe Hotel a decade ago—will swoon over this compendium of its recent work. The book has a particular focus on Workstead’s residential projects, which exude an effortless sense of lived-in luxury." —ELLE DECOR

I'll be honest: I love these kinds of interiors books for their photos - it's eye candy, and the first place I look when I'm looking for ideas of what to do with my own space. This book is a visual feast, and an awesome opportunity to see all of their work in one place.

This is a beautiful book! An important and much anticipated compilation of the fresh ideas and perspectives percolating forth from the minds of Workstead. The header on page 8 so clearly defines the essence of Workstead design ethos: the opposite of disposable. This really hits home for me in this day and age. Whether it's Workstead lighting design, or interior + architectural design, the emphasis is so much about both a lasting quality and an undated aesthetic. In flipping through this beautiful book, each project reads like a time-less capsule... I could easily be transported back or forward in time, but all the while feeling the nod toward being present and functional in a space. And remembering that simplicity still exists, but we must create it. Workstead reminds us that it's possible. Get a copy to enjoy yourself. It would also make an amazing gift for design minded folk.

I've been obsessed with Workstead since I first saw their work in the Remodelista book. There, I learned from them two tips: one, always have dimmer switches on your lights. Two, exposed bulbs and hardware store $2 ceramic fixtures will do the job of an expensive sconce (or at least will act as a decent placeholder until you find just the right sconce). Anyway, I DID find the right sconces after a few years.... Workstead makes them. And they're so, so gorgeous. This book helped me finesse my house and gave me so many decorating ideas. These people have impeccable taste.

This book is a breath of fresh air. I have been a long time fan of Workstead. As a fan of their work I was thrilled to be able to see all the amazing projects in one place. The thoughtfulness that goes into each space is breathtaking. Each detail so considered...I could stare at each page for hours linking all the textures, shapes, and colors that tell such an elegant story. I cant wait for the next book of projects by Workstead!

We expected timeless design but unfortunately saw nothing but dated design. The furniture and finishes are the finest but not a single “wow” moment in the entire 240 pages. Complete waste of money and is headed to the local Goodwill

I was thrilled to receive my copy of the much-anticipated Workstead monograph. The thoughtful narrative from author David Sokol perfectly compliments the stunning home imagery that represents the firm’s work over the last ten years. Workstead has remained a bold voice in the American design landscape since its founding, and I look forward to following their next ten years!

A great book showcasing beautiful home interiors and design. I'm inspired by so many of the Workstead projects. This brand-new edition is a perfect gift, but just make sure to save one back for your coffee table! (PS: I hope they will publish another book that features their commercial projects...soooo good!)
