Their second album, featuring the single Mr. Soul. This is another stereo breakout from the Buffalo Springfield boxset.

For a band that only made three LPs and didn't see much commercial success beyond one hit single ("For What It's Worth," 1966) Buffalo Springfield has been more than a little influential. The legend grew in the wake of their disbanding: both Stephen Stills and Neil Young went on to much greater fame as solo artists and membership in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; rhythm guitarist Richie Furay went on to form Poco with late arrival Jim Messina. Once the history is digested it is still easy to hear why this band was indulged by Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun--Buffalo Springfield was an exceptional band. Despite tensions in the studio (Stills and Young bickered incessantly) they produced what is widely considered their best and most consistent album statement. Stills was on the ascension, contributing "Everydays," "Bluebird" and "Rock and Roll Woman" among other gems. Young was also on the ascendant, producing "Mr. Soul," "Expecting to Fly" and the psychedelic "Broken Arrow." Richie Furay was coming into his own as a songwriter with "A Child's Claim to Fame" and the lovely ballad "Sad Memory" (featuring a wonderfully melancholy lead guitar courtesy of Neil Young).

Buffalo Springfiled collapsed under the weight of internal tensions in 1968 but not before producing this, their defining work. The production and fidelity is more than a little dated, reflecting the trends and technology of the day, but that should not discourage anyone form owning this album. "Buffalo Springfield Again" is a landmark recording, not a bad song or performance at all.

I first bought this album as a sixteen year old kid back in 1967. I had no idea who the Buffalo Springfield were. The album cover is what sold me. I was into the San Fransisco sound at that time, and thought that this must be what an acid trip looks like. The album starts off with the driving beat of Neil Young's "Mr. Soul" and ends with what I thought was the weakest track on the album "Broken Arrow." In between is some of the greatest music to come out of the sixties. The band was formed in L.A. and from what I understand by the time this album came out they were starting to break up. In fact, there is not one track were all members play on the same song. They used a lot of session musicians, which I think makes the album much better. To me this album was the birth of the genre "Folk Rock". You can not go wrong with this album. Highly recommended.

The Buffalo Springfield was one of those groups from the sixties "Summer of Love" era that spawned a zillion groups after they broke up. Poco, CSN, CSN&Y, Crazy Horse, Exuma and, lawd-a-mighty, even INFLUENCED (greatly) the band AMERICA....all these were spun off or inspired by this two (maybe three) album wonder of a group! There was also a legendary collaborative album of the time, called "Super Session", which featured icon Stephen Stills, pretty much the heart of the Springfield, playing bluesy-folksy jams with Electric Flag/Paul Butterfield veteran Mike Bloomfield and Blues Project/Blood, Sweat & Tears founder Al Kooper.

That said, it's easy to see why this group was so influential. This album has the gorgeous number "Expecting To Fly" on it, a song by Neil Young, as well as the catchy "Rock & Roll Woman" and "Bluebird", both by Stills. Stills was the Justin Hayward of the Springfield....the Gordon Sumner. His writing pretty much is what you think of when you think of the Springfield, just as Hayward's classic "Knights in White Satin" and "The Actor" are songs you think of when you think of the Moody Blues. However, I can assure you that, even though his "Mr Soul" borders on self-parody, (he sounds just like foppish actor Paul Lynde on the cut,) about 60% of the reason I bought this album was for "Expecting To Fly", an absolutely BEE-YOO-TIFUL song composed by Young, (with, I suspect a little help from SOMEBODY, like his producer, Jack Nitzsche.) It's one of those songs that leaps out at you like the Mona Lisa leaps out from the walls of the Louvre. Stills' work is excellent on this album..."R&R Woman" is one of my favorites, but "Expecting" is the one that survives mucho successive replays. And though Richie Furay is an ok composer, his work has a sameishness about it that helps it to fall back into the shadows compared to Stills and Young.

Apparently, some aspect of the Springfield made Stills and Young legends overnight, because this album and its predecessor, "For What It's Worth", didn't exactly dominate the charts back in the day. But both Stills AND Young went on to become chiseled-in-stone mainstays of the folk-rock scene that have been very active for almost FORTY YEARS!! (Cheez, get out the Geritol!!) I suspect it's the wizard guitar work and the CSN-precognitive vocal harmonizing that did it. That, and the great songwriting for such young musicians.

Richie Furay....? Who he??

Heck, they could have supplied people for Emerson, Lake & Palmer too, for all we know! (g)

Recently purchased "The Best of Buffalo" from a Wal-Mart bargain bin. Liked Buffalo so much that I went for this one on Amazon.
You'll be surprised that this album is not all 60's style rock or just Neil Young's voice, though I'm a fan of the immensely gifted Young. What you'll hear is a wide range of the Buffalo sound with an impression that these guys could excel in just about any musical genre. If it's SQ (sound quality) you're looking for, you'll find it with this album. The remastering is excellent with an added plus of HDCD if your player can read it. Great listen with lots of soundstage. Gets my recommendation.

I have known of this band and the artists in their careers that followed Buffalo Springfield but had never really listened to their early work here. All the brilliance of these artists that would follow in their future lives as artists was here on full and fresh display to enjoy. The vocals are beautiful and the song choices great. Enjoy!

These Rhino reissues of Buffalo Springfield have all been excellent for me... great pressings and great masterings, especially the greatest hits release! As for the studio albums i much prefer the stereo versions to the mono, far more engaging to listen to in my opinion. Recommended!
