Editorial Reviews

Reissue of the band's ninth album in 2012. “Days Go By” was also the first job with Pete Parada as a drummer.

1. The Future Is Now: 10+/10. This is an awesome opener. It's fast, catchy, and the lyrics are intelligent and cynical .
2. Secrets from the Underground: 10+/10. Ditto what I just said. "The Future Is Now" blends into this one on the album, so they're really like one song. Add this to the list of awesome one-two blended combos, along with "Have You Ever"/"Staring at the Sun" and "Never Gonna Find Me"/"Lightning Rod."
3. Days Go By: 9/10. This is the first single. It has wise lyrics, and the tune is awfully reminiscent of Foo Fighters' "Times Like These." It's different from anything the band has done before, but still distinctively The Offspring.
4. Turning into You: 9/10. So it's fair to say this is overall the best first four songs ever on an album from The Offspring. This one has a cute riff and electronic drums in it, and it sounds a little emo, but in a good way.
5. Hurting As One: 7/10. This is where the album starts to go downhill. This song sounds a little like one of the filler tracks from "Smash," which isn't a bad thing, but it's not a remarkable song.
6. Cruising California (Bumpin' in My Trunk): 3/10. I wasn't sure how to grade this one. I don't like it because it's a pop song and the lyrics are nauseating. However, I have to give the band credit for experimenting, and it's still kind of catchy. It's probably the worst song on the album, but it's still not as unlistenable as "When You're in Prison."
7. All I Have Left Is You: 7/10. I like it when The Offspring do deeper, slower songs, and this is one of those. It sounds a little like "Fix You" from the last album, but it's more enjoyable. It's also the longest song they've done since "Pay the Man."
8. OC Guns: 5/10. This is another oddball song. It's kind of catchy I guess, and half of the song makes a point, but the rest is just random Spanish. If they could borrow some of the instrumental ideas here for another song on another album, they might be able to do something with it.
9. Dirty Magic: 10/10. Dirty Magic was an awesome song 20 years ago, and this rerecording definitely breathes new life into it. It's neither better nor worse than the original, but it's definitely different and shows the band's musical maturity.
10. I Wanna Secret Family (With You): 4/10. This song is good competition for worst on the album. Lyrically, it's based on a pretty weak premise, and it doesn't do much musically either. I think this was meant to be a hair metal song.
11. Dividing by Zero: 10/10. Now we're getting back into true punk mode. This song sounds very old school, and it's a damn good one. I especially like the "Tehran"-like introduction.
12. Slim Pickens Does the Right Thing and Rides the Bomb to Hell: 9/10. It's a solid song, but I expect a little more from a closer. Also, the name is too long.

Overall, this album is very diverse, schizophrenic even. Some of the experiments work well, and some fail pretty badly. The few songs that stick to the tried and true formula are exceptionally good. They're the reason I have to give this five stars. They more than make up for the failures.

Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2012
The first thing I want to say about this album is that I am a fan of the band. I own all of their studio albums and have liked them for years. This is not a bad album, but it is a serious departure from what we have had from them before. I'll be reviewing the songs one-by-one, because each one seems to stand on its own here. Every single song on the first half seems to have a weird opening guitar riff that doesn't add much to the song in my opinion.

1. The Future Is Now - 8.5/10
I'd like to rate this one higher, but how derivative of Rise Against it is bothers me a lot. This is an upbeat song with a lot of energy. The lyrics take a backseat to how they're being said. It feels very typical of a modern punk song, with loud singing over a basic and uninteresting guitar.

2. Secrets From The Underground - 9/10
This is one of those punk songs that is a great chorus and not a lot else. It follows a very similar formula to the first track, but I rate it a bit higher because it'd more interesting. The lyrics are basically meaningless, typical punk "we're going to have an uprising and the president is going to die" stuff.

3. Days Go By - 10/10
I love this song. It's incredibly catchy, and has some lyrics that don't just sound good, but also give the message very effectively. It's just a good rock song with a lot less anger than the past two tracks.

4. Turning Into You - 9.5/10
Another high-energy track, but this time a lot more meaningful. There's some real introspection going on here that's probably a little deeper than I'm willing to think about it. The best part about it is how it builds up to the pre-chorus, where all the energy is released and the chorus leads you back down.

5. Hurting As One - 7.5/10
The chorus consists of one lyrics and some background yelling, and the verses are not pronounced very clearly. Something about the way the "b" in "blood" is pronounced makes me flinch a little, which is probably an unfair way to rate the song.

6. Cruising California (Bumpin' In My Trunk) - 2/10
Oh dear. I know this is a parody, but I'm just annoyed in every way by this. It's not clever or funny, just annoying. If they didn't throw in a catchy beat, I'd probably be more tolerant. As it is, it's just this annoying mess of a song that will likely get more radio play than the rest of their songs combined.

As a side note, hearing Dexter talk about a woman "waving her caboose at you" followed by a "uh-huh" straight from Pretty Fly For A White Guy is an experience I wish I could forget.

7. All I Have Left Is You - 10/10
It's really such a nice break after hearing Cruising California. Legitimate emotions, just a touch of depth, and pretty good sequel to Fix You or Kristy Are You Doing Okay. The drums sound really off, but I try not to let that dampen my enjoyment. "And we're holding on when there's nothing left to hold on to." Other than being somewhat poetic, the melodies of the two guitars and the harmony from the background singing is great.

8. OC Guns - 8/10
Gah, I don't know what they were thinking. This song is along the same lines as Cruising California, but at least it doesn't actually aggravate me. This song is like Original Prankster stripped of all elements of rock music. Some of the music at the end redeems the song, however. I like the short guitar solo and outro the most.

9. Dirty Magic - 8.5/10
Mediocre remake of a great song. There is much heavier distortion and a more processed sound to everything. Dexter also sings a different tone than he did in the original. It's sort of like playing Halo: Anniversary Edition versus Halo: Combat Evolved. There are lots of changes, and it's technically better, but a lot of the crisp cleanliness and charm of the original is lost in the muck.

10. I Wanna Secret Family (With You) - 7.5/10
It's just so poppy I could die. It's halfway between Cruising California and a good song, so I gave it an appropriate score. The lyrics are incredibly shallow, at one point the word "swag" is used. I'm just not comfortable with this song in general, but if you don't listen to the words, there's definitely some music appeal.

11. Dividing By Zero - 10/10
My favorite upbeat song of the album. It sounds like it's the "Hammerhead" of the album, with a similar guitar riff and chorus. There is a sense of anxiety and fear in the song that is rare to see in music that isn't metal. Some of the lyrics feel like they were pulled out of nowhere and don't seen to fit, but it's a good way to end the album... except there's one more.

12. Slim Pickens Does The Right Thing And Puts A Very Long Title On This Song - 9/10
It seems to switch between disgust and anger and despair repeatedly throughout the song, creating three distinct sections to the finale song. I'm a little disappointed in the guitar solo, being the verse's vocal melody... on the guitar. It's incredibly uninspired. I like how you can tell specifically what The Offspring are referring to, and who they're angry at when they write this song, unlike the average punk song's "Down with you guys and up with my guys!"

Overall - It's a good album, but if you don't count the bad songs, it's sort of a short one. It has little in common with their old stuff, something made painfully obvious by Dirt Magic's remake, but with the way music is going I'm counting my lucky stars that this album turned out as well as it did.

I've been a big fan of The Offspring for a long time. While some albums stray from some of the "roots" I would say this album is a good balance. "The Future is Now", "Secrets From The Underground", and "Dividing By Zero" have the sound of some of their older music, while of course "Dirty Magic" is a great remake of a song from Ignition. On the other end of the spectrum are songs such as "Cruising California (Bumpin' In My Trunk)" and "OC Guns" which have a sound much more reminiscent of "Pretty Fly" and some of those other songs.

While I personally don't love every song, I think in general the album is very good and there aren't any songs that I absolutely can't listen to due to not liking the sound. I personally feel that "The Future is Now" is one of the better songs they've put out over the past decade.

This is definitely one of the Offspring's more energetic albums in a long time. The standout tracks to me are The Future is Now, Secrets From the Underground, Dividing By Zero, Slim Pickins Does the Right Think and Rides the Bomb to Hell, and Dirty Magic, which is a totally re-recorded version of the song from Ignition and sounds great. I Wanna Secret Family With You, Turning Into You, and Hurting As One are also good tracks. This album contains a good mixture of songs with styles that span all of the eras of music of the Offspring. Even with a few weak tracks such as Cruising California, which sounds a little too much like a summer pop song, and OC Guns, which is a mariachi/reggae influenced song about gangs from the OC, there's enough good tracks and enough diversity to make this album their best in a while.

It's sometimes hard to believe that this band has been going almost 30 years; are these really the same guys who we saw performing "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)" back in 1998? You bet they are. Like many people, I spend way too long on YouTube watching music videos, and I stumbled across the single "Days go by" a few weeks ago. Hugely catchy, with lots of jangly guitar and uplifting lyrics. A simple song, without question, but isn't that what popular music should be about?

So, I bought the album (from Amazon, of course) and I can't stop listening to it. It's one of those classic albums that just keep growing on you until you can't fault a single note. Starting with the high energy "The Future Is Now" it's pure Offspring all the way, with the band's characteristic sound still there to please the long term fans, but with enough tweaking to maybe pull in some new ones. The sound is altogether a bit less "Punk" for sure, but every band needs to develop, and there's still enough rage, sarcasm and irony there. Some reviewers have panned this album, saying that the band have lost their way and have been doing this stuff for too long, but I don't agree. "OC Guns" and "Cruising California (Bumpin' in My Trunk)" poke fun at the hip kids in SoCal, "I Wanna Secret Family (With You)" is hookier than an angling shop and "Slim Pickens Does the Right Thing and Rides the Bomb to Hell" is a good old 'what the hell we're all finished' tune, the only track on the album with swearing in the lyrics.

So, is it dumbed down "Offspring Lite", like some reviewers say, or have the band morphed, ever so slightly, into a new existence? Well, you'll have to decide for yourselves of course, but I choose the latter.

Are Dexter and those other young punks all grown up now? Oh yes, and it sounds good to me.
