Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing. Last in Line was formed in 2011, when Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain, and Vivian Campbell, (Ronnie James Dio's co-conspirators and co-writers on the Holy Diver, Last in Line - the album from which they took their name, and Sacred Heart albums) teamed up with esteemed vocalist Andrew Freeman. Their debut Heavy Crown was released in February 2016 to critical acclaim. Initially, the release had been preceded by tragedy when Bain unexpectedly passed away in January. Last in Line, honoring what they knew would be Bain's wish to keep the band moving, brought in renowned bassist Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne) and committed to sustained touring in support of the album. In late 2017, the band gathered in L.A. to start the recording of a second album, which was produced by the band and Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, The End: machine, ex-Dokken), who also helmed Heavy Crown. Having really gelled as a band while touring, the songwriting came readily and they've created a record that shows a big progression in sound, while immediately being recognizable as Last in Line thanks to Appice's rhythms, thunderous bass from Soussan, amazing vocals from Freeman, and the roaring guitars of Campbell.

Great hard rock band CD sounds great on both my home audio stereo, and my car stereo system

The thing I love about this band is how, understanding their name and background aside, they make it their mission to be wholly original musically, not some kind of modern spin-off or masked “tribute” attempt. The genesis of this project is that the original band had a renewed interest in each other and the music they very much helped create in Dio, so they got together to recreate some of that magic and make brand new, modern rock material.

I absolutely loved Heavy Crown and have now listened to II completely through enough times to credibly weigh-in. One thing I dig about this band is their superb use of space and pauses, letting the music breathe and flow nicely. Vivian’s signature Gibson sound is bright and felt in every song, although in various moods, textures, etc. His playing is top notch here. Another thing I like is the band’s width of attempted style and contrast throughout the album. Some songs have a distinct “alt rock” vibe at times (Blackout the Sun, The Unkown, Gods and Tyrants), reflect more traditional, up-tempo rock (Year of the Gun, Electrified), swaggering mid-tempo (Give up the Ghost), and even a little punk/thrashy feel (False Flag). Vocalist Andrew Freeman handles multiple styles awesomely and I have come to really appreciate this guy’s unique delivery. Phil Soussan is a tasteful and fitting replacement for the late Jimmy Bain, and Vinny Appice simply continues to add to his rich catologue of quality work- Vinny is no joke and his presence is felt.

Overall, if you are looking for new music, to support a modern band working hard to create something new and entertaining, have it be fresh but just familiar enough, than I’d say this release won’t disappoint!

LIL is still carrying the tradition of a great hard rock band. I thought their first album was a masterpiece and this is no slouch either. As a whole I think the debut had a bit more punch but regardless I have enjoyed this record on many repeated listens.
Andrew Freeman is one of the finest vocalist in rock today. Vivian Campbell lays down that great tone you want to hear if your a fan.
Phil Soussan is a fine replacement for the great Jimmy Bain. Of course Vinny Appice is always a master drummer as one would expect.

Each one of these men are outstanding musicians individually. However, when they came together and wrote the songs for II, it was the start of one of the best fast paced heavy music that I have heard in a long time. I already bought the 2nd cd, just in case the first one get worn out from playing it daily, and several times a day at work. Vivian Campbell is magic and brings the guitar to life. Vinny Appice plays drums like no one I have ever seen. When I asked him about it, he told me that he plays angry, and if you see him play, you might believe it. He is just an amazing force on the drums. Phil Soussan plays the bass somewhat like Vinny plays drums.. He makes it heavy and it sounds awesome. Andrew Freeman has the highest level of energy, and from the time that first song starts, he does not back of the gas until that last song is over. He gets a live audience to interact, and plays off of their energy. Bottom line: Definitely the best I have heard in years, play it loud and enjoy every minute listening to Last In Line II. Love it!! Thanks.

These guys put on a clinic of how to play your instruments. Each song takes you on a musical journey. This is not Dio - no one is turning invisible or the fighting the beast. But the lyrics Im still digging into. So on to the singing. Andrew Freeman apparently has been paying his dues in the music industry now he deserves rock star status. At moments I feel like Im listening to the 4 octaves of Sound Garden and thats the biggest compliment I can think of for a singer.

I ordered 3 CDs: This one, JP "Redeemer of Souls" and Last In Line "Heavy Crown". This one came first, so I listened to it first. The write up made it sound like it was better than the first (which I hadn't heard yet), so I was excited to hear something new. Um...I guess disappointed would be my first description. I've listened to it one and a half times through, but could take it anymore and put "Redeemer" in. It isn't "bad", it's just...Blah. Not one song grabbed me. I will give it another shot later and hope it was just a bad time to listen this time. Sorry, but this one fell flat.
(P.S. -> "Heavy Crown" is sooo much better)

With this 2nd album, Last In Line continue to deliver quality hard rock. Great musicianship mixed with intelligent lyrics will have your head buzzing with these songs long after the CD has stopped playing. Produced by Jeff Pilson again, the mix and overall sound is huge without a bunch of unnecessary overdubs. Vivian's guitar playing is once again ripping and makes one hope there will be more albums to come. Obviously, Vivian has a lucrative job with Def Leppard, but this has to be more artistically satisfying for him as a musician.

Very good 2nd album from Last In Line. The songs are darker, more mature, and heavier. The band is finding its way and developing its own sound. Vivian Campbell is shining here with some catchy riffs. Seasoned musicians delivering a fresh rock album.

The album is great. A step up from the first which was also a great album.

It has everything you'd expect from Andrews outstanding vocals, vivs soaring guitar solos, vinnys solid drumming and Phil's great bass playing.

Can't fault this album.
