Editorial Reviews

Following the release of Weezer (The White Album), the band began working on what they called "The Black Album," but as they worked, they found the songs they were writing felt more like reveries from a beach at the end of the world. Instead of forcing a different direction, they began an entirely new album; Pacific Daydream was born.
Pacific Daydream - an album full of the melodic mastery and craftsmanship for which Weezer are known - is a record that navigates the uncertainty between reality and dreams, blurring the line between the listener knowing if they are daydreaming the world of the album, or if the world of the album is daydreaming them. It's a record about finding the gray area between the black and the white, about escaping the everyday into the fantasy of what may be just down the line, but also maybe isn't. It's an album that sounds like the Beach Boys and The Clash fell in love by the ocean and had one hell of an amazing baby.

Although this album came out last autumn, 2017. I did not stumble upon it until February 2018. I admittedly, have not bought anything by Weezer in a number of years. But after previewing this album, I decided to give it a shot. To my surprise, the album is really very good. It has a smooth, pop groove to it and the melodies are extremely catchy. For me, it was really the 1980s pop flavor that bled through the songs that really made it exciting for me; think A-Ha ( of the infamous, Take on Me, fame) or perhaps Real Life. There are admittedly, a couple of tracks here, that are straight up modern big radio pop songs that would cater to a younger audience. But besides that, the album has a very mature and melodic sound. Personally, I think this album got a bad rap with some of the younger fans. Like many music fans, they cry, whimper and criticize if every single album is not a carbon copy of the last. It would seem that most Weezer fans want nothing but reproductions of the blue album over and over again ad nauseam. It's always been a tender point for me to see fans want to pigeonhole an artist into a certain sound and bash the hell out of them when they try to experiment or flex their creative muscles. But do yourself a favor, and ignore all of the talking heads who try to cast a shadow over other peoples art. This is one of the best albums I've heard in a while, and I think it is exceptional among Weezer's many recordings. Pick up a copy, play it and let the hypnotic melodies carry you away into a Pacific daydream.

Weezer has had an incredible run over their past handful of albums. The one with the dog on the cover, well I never got that one, but I actually liked Hurley, and loved Everything... and The White Album. Each album was better than the last. You expect a group to have a lull after a while, especially considering the unusually short gaps between these albums' release dates. But the Weez is on a roll, and keeps it rocking. Er, popping? So yeah, with so much great Weez recently, I waited for summer to come around to listen to this SUMMER ALBUM.

Well here we are, and I can't believe it might be even better than White! The Beach Boys tribute continues and intensifies on this one, but nothing is derivative. If anything there's a lot of the 1994 Blue feeling here, but lighter and dreamier. Really though, it's a new kind of Weezer album. Nothing I would consider a novelty here. Even White had Thank God for Girls, but this one you'll want to just listen from start to finish, with no need for the forward button.
If you're not sure about the single, do yourself a favor and find the acoustic version of Feels Like Summer, which I think is available on Amazon. And if you do like the single, well, yeah, you need the acoustic version for sure.

This album is both timeless and fresh, not something most bands 24 years in can manage, but these guys are seriously climbing the ranks of the greatest bands of all time.

When I first heard" feels like summer"...I was worried. It did not sound like weezer. But, I thought.."this is the one oddball track, maybe the rest are good". "Mexican fender" was released, and that was more like it! I felt better. Then "beach boys" was released and at the time I thought" this is almost the worst track weezer has ever done", ( can't stop partying is the worst) dread set in. " weekend woman" was released, and it was ok, but also not really weezer. I believe "happy hour" next, and I was starting to notice a pattern... I had preordered the mp3 album, and was starting to regret it. 5 songs out of 10....1 great, 3 meh, 1 bad. Then the rest of the album dropped.....I quickly skipped to the last five songs.... and they thankfully were really good. None of them are rock songs. They are pop, but good pop. They are mostly acoustic, and would not be out of place on one of Weezer's classic albums. This is a strange release because it was meant to be a cohesive summery pop record, but it feels like two different records. The first five sound like Weezer making attempts at different genres, with mixed results. The second 5 seem cohesive and modern sounding, while still sounding like Weezer. It turns out" feels like summer" wasn't the oddball single.." Mexican fender" was. It is the only rock song here. Probably put here to hook old Weezer fans into buying this. I hope there is a deluxe version with two or three more songs that are good, because if you take out tracks 2-4 this is a much better album. They have grown on me, and I can see what they were going for, but these three are weak compared to the rest. The last 5 songs saved this album in my opinion, and would have liked a whole album in this style, or mixed with a few more rocking songs. Hoping for an all out rock record next time, something in the style of maladroit, or pinkerton. This album may not "sound like weezer", but these guys are artists, they should make what they want. I'll check it out either way. They make music for themselves not me.... that's how it should be.

Rivers has been doing this a while. He knows what he's doing. He's a smart guy. This is a concept album. You have to get that to get what this Weezer album is really all about. The opening guitar riff tells us what we need to know from the very beginning -- Weezer is still a rock band. See, let us prove it. Because what we get from that point might under other circumstances seem outwardly disappointing. This is not a rock album, this is a concept album. Rivers has brilliantly come up with the idea of writing every last lyric and every last chord from the heart. He lets you know he is doing that, and at one point he actually all-but comes out and says it.

Now don't get he wrong, we've been hearing bubble gum Weezer for a while. Beverly Hills and Pork and Beans announced that loud and clear, as if Buddy Holly and the entire Green Album hadn't been convincing enough. But that was rock. This is different. This is NOT a rock album. It is not intended to be a rock album. And, come on, please stop that chatter, Rivers has not sold out. As rock music, this album sucks. Yeah, I will give you that. But don't miss the point. The music on this album is amazing. Conceptually.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Stagnation Here
Reviewed in Canada on November 14, 2017
Weezer experiments with this album with a more pop feel. While some might lament that this isn't "classic" Weezer, I take this experimentation as a good thing. It would be very hard to make music for 20+ years with the same sound every time. Then people would complain that the band has stagnated. Props to River and crew for trying new things even 23 years later. Overall a solid effort.

E' un buon Album ma l'anima rock è molto sfumata, diciamo che anni fa erano sicuramente più punk, credo sia una delle band più sottovalutate della storia in Europa.

5.0 out of 5 stars WEEZER machen Popmusik, natürlich machen Sie das!
Reviewed in Germany on October 27, 2017
Freunde der Nacht, it FEELS LIKE SUMMER! Wie immer: THIS IS POP!
