Rush's "Dark Period" of the 80's...Live
3 Stars
Rush's "Dark Period" of the 80's...Live
This is part three of a comprehensive four part series of Music Reviews of the Progressive Rock band Rush. When a band has been around as long as RUSH has (30 years), their musical styles will change and evolve, just not always for the best. I group the bands third set of releases into what is known as Rush's "Synthesizer Period". All of these albums came out during the 1980's and represent the band's post-Moving Pictures era. The albums are Signals (1982), Grace Under Pressure (1984), Power Windows (1985), Hold Your Fire (1987) and A Show of Hands "Live" (1988).A Show of Hands is a snapshot of the Hold Your Fire tour. Only two songs on the record, Mystic Rhythms and Witch Hunt were from the preceding Power Windows tour. I'm only giving Show of Hands 3 stars. But this is compared to all of Rush's other Live offerings, which I consider better. Production is good, even better than Exit Stage Left, but I just don't like a lot of these selections, which are predominantly from Power Windows and Hold Your Fire, my two least favorite Rush albums. Personally, I would just like to forget that the 80's even happened and that one of my favorite progressive hard rock bands had to travel down this dark path of synthesizer laden "new wave" crap.On the bright side, for a fully loaded single disc that used to cost about $14, you can now pick up this '97 re-master for around $8 brand new. Now that's a bargain. Not recommended. For completists only.

Much better than "Exit." First live album will always be a classic! This one really gets you thinking (unlike the others). Peart, to me, is one of the best lyricists the WORLD has ever produced. Songs like "Manhattan Project", "Marathon", and especially "Red Sector A" really set your mind pondering. The latter especially, which to me is one of the best (and most poignant) songs ever recorded. My heart still stops when I hear that song, and I'm not even Jewish. Saw that tour and will never forget it. Only wish "The Weapon" had been on it.

A fantastic live album by my favorite band! Contrary to other reviews this album is one of my top live albums of theirs. It may take many repeated listens to "get" where they are at this point in time, much like any of the studio albums from 1983-1987. This IS Rush still in their prime though and one of my favorite era's of the bands career. I got my father to go back and listen to these 80's albums and he now finally understands what was so great about this time. Prior he was stuck on the "Rush was only good up to Moving Pictures" bandwagon, and he is hard to get to change his opinion on anything. So my suggestion, if you "hate" this era, is that you go back and take a hard listen. You might just find that this music is not as "bad" as you remember....

My favorite tracks on this albums are Distant Early Warning, The Big Money, Closer to the Heart, and Witch Hunt.

I recently purchased A Show Of Hands and was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this CD. I bought Signals about a year ago and rarely listened to it. I was going through my Rush CDS and saw Signals and after listening to it I have added to my collection Hold Your Fire, Power Windows, Grace Under Pressure (One Of My Favorites) and Clockwork Angels Tour. These CDS are a different sound for Rush. The musicianship on this CD is excellent. This is one of the best live Rush CDS in my collection. A must have if you are a Rush fan.

If you like live Rush you must get this double album. Top quality and nice song selection, new and old. Only complaint is that it came with a large scratch on side 3 but luckily still plays. It was a new album.

Tried two so far and both warped. Refund still processing since Feb 26! Well, I recently rolled the dice and tried a 4th copy (there was a third after my initial review). Hooray! I finally received a copy with both records not warped. This is a great album and the pressing is excellent. If you're a Rush fan, just buy it. Hopefully, the warped records are becoming a thing of the past. I did adjust my rating to 5 stars based on the music and the pressing. It's still aggravating that the first three I bought were badly warped.

Great album I purchased as a gift hoping it would arrive in time. Shockingly, it was delivered in 2 days, AND 3 days before the expected start of arrival time (Feb 25 - Mar 3). Excellent job during these unpredictable times. Thanks

A Show of Hands encapsulates Rush's "new wave" period, a much maligned era in their evolution. I love this period, it's not hard to separate earlier Rush from this and appreciate what they were doing at this time, using different instrumentation, more synth and taking in strong influences from post-punk 80's contemporaries. I will give you that Peart's earnestly humanistic lyrics don't always mesh well with synth swells and the generally uplifting vibe, call it cheesy I guess. But Alex's slicing PRS guitar on something like "Turn the Page" is undeniably Rush and impressively performed here. If you don't like this period of Rush than you definitely will not like this, but I'm certainly enjoying it. The vinyl reissues have been an excellent value overall and they sound great. A Show of Hands on 2 LP is no exception!

5.0 out of 5 stars Eins der besten Live-Alben aller Zeiten!
Reviewed in Germany on November 29, 2020

Die einzige Ausnahme ist der Schlusstitel "Closer To The Heart" vom großartigen "A Farewell To Kings" von 1977.

Fazit: Das 1988 erschienene "A Show Of Hands" ist vielleicht die beste Live-Veröffentlichung des famos-virtuosen kanadischen Power-Trios namens Rush.

"Exit... Stage Left", "Rush In Rio", "Time Machine" oder z.B.

Mein Urteil: +++++

Prädikat: MUSTHAVE (nicht nur für Fans)
