Editorial Reviews

When Neil Young entered Shangri La Studio with the band Promise Of The Real a few months ago, there were a lot of images and feelings careening around his soul. The country was heading in a direction Young had never seen, even though up until then he thought he'd seen it all. But something different was happening, and it had gotten inside his music. "I'm a Canadian by the way and I love the USA," he sings on the first song "Already Great." The ethos of The Visitor can be summed up in the refrain of "Already Great" where Young insists, "Already great, you're already great. You're the promise land, the helping hand. No wall. No hate. No fascist USA. WHOSE STREET? OUR STREET." From those words, Neil Young was ready to take a musical journey on his new album The Visitor like he had never taken before. It was one where he'd even surprise himself, always the mark of a creative leap. By the end of the recording sessions, he knew he'd made his most diverse album going all the way back to Harvest in 1972, when America was also in the throes of becoming unhinged. Neil Young didn't blink then, and he is not blinking now.

Top reviews from the United States

For those of us old enough to have come on board with Neil Young back in the days of Buffalo Springfield, it has been a long and circuitous journey. There have been brilliant albums like Everybody Knows This is Nowhere,After the Gold Rush, Tonight's the Night and Rust Never Sleeps. There have been returns to form like Freedom and Ragged Glory. There have been weird sidesteps like Trans and Life and, frankly, most of his work in the 80s. But the genius that was apparent all the way back to songs like "Broken Arrow" and "Expecting to Fly" never vanished. The man has had more comebacks than anyone in popular music. Now in his 70s, in "The Visitor" he has produced one of his very best albums--maybe the best since Sleeps with Angels or even Freedom or even the so-called ditch records.

Yes. The Visitor is weird. And some of it is political in a didactic and direct manner that will alienate some his listeners. And in other places it is full of a kind of anachronistic yet ultimately charming and sincere hippie idealism that only Neil Young could begin to pull off .Some of the songs are indeed "filler" but in the best way, as arrows pointing to the bigger deeper songs that they sit next to. But the writing throughout is superb. The brilliantly simple riffs of the opener "Already Great" merge effortlessly into the gorgeous chords and harmonies of the chorus to great effect. "Carnival" is a magnificent dreamscape of existence as a carnival midway, full of surrealist imagery and intricate rhymes that hearkens back to his best work in Buffalo Springfield. The ten-minute long acoustic epic "Forever" is lyrically and melodically among the best songs he has ever written and shows the tremendous interplay with Promise of the Real as a band, especially in terms of the background vocal harmonies which are exquisite. In fact, all of the quieter numbers on this cd are both wonderfully written and produced in ways that continue to reveal acoustic surprises that are frankly, delightful. The vocal harmonies throughout this record are never less than remarkable and one of the real pleasures of The Visitor.

Even the orchestrated anthem "Children of Destiny" works, despite its almost polemical direct call to action lyrics, because of the sincerity of the performance, which perfectly sets up the more meditative and obscure "Forever."

One wonders whether or not Neil Young is somehow mystically plugged into the zeitgeist, in that he released this record that has a song with the lyrics "Lock-em up" on the day Mike Flynn was finally indicted. But then again this is an album about one's magical loving connection to both the Earth and humanity, a hymn to Gaia that is never pretentious and always sincere. Like Bowie's Blackstar, it is an album that both ties together and illuminates the work of an artist with a powerful back catalog, while simultaneously breaking new ground with younger musicians.

This is not just another Neil Young "comeback." Neither is it a minor idiosyncratic sidestep. This is a major work. If you are a fan of Neil Young give it a listen and time to grow on you. You will not be disappointed.

This is one of the wildest and diverse Neil Young albums I have ever heard, if not THE WILDEST!!!

The dude has fully taken off his gloves in terms of the lyrical content. Neil is PISSED the F. OFF, as are many of us these days. I think this is gonna be a rallying point for the foks who need to be reminded that we aren't Totally Effed, as we still have the power of the people (like Patti Smith said, right?). This is a god**mned protest album and if you don't like protest, move back to your saccarine sweet world. --- yet at the same time an album of hope and a reminder to us that WE the people have the ability to steer the direction of our collective lives...

Musically, The Visitor crushes everything in its path. Yes, the first time I heard "Already Great," I almost peed my pants, as it is funny -- and it's insightful, w/o being nationalistic. The other songs are gloriously all over the place. Some of it reminds me of his Harvest Moon era sound, sweet and nuanced. Don't expect this to be an easy listen, for you will have to open your ears and your mind. There are some seriously deep tunes here. It almost sounds like the classic Crazy Horse, as the distortion is kicked up high.
Listen, I'll be honest, I haven't loved all of Neil's albums over the last 10 or 15 years, as in my humble opinion, he has been hit and miss on a lot of his stuff ---> but this one: OH MAN, it's a goody!!!!

This CD will be played for many people in the months to come and I'll be playing the heck out of it myself.
The Visitor is destined to become a classic that we'll look back at and say, "WOW! Neil really helped me get through one of the hardest times of my life."

----- It's all I can do not to bash #45, but Neil doesn't mention him once on the album, so I won't either.

Highly Recommended!!!

if i hadn't gone into this purchase with expectations, i'd like this more. but darn it, i purchased this because i wanted more music like "comes a time" and while there are several songs on this that totally met my ill-advised expectations, there were other songs that i was not prepared for. someone's review said this was neil being neil, and so yes, that is very true. with that in mind, (neil being neil) every song is a nod to five stars afterall. but will this rank over comes a time? no. harvest moon? no. so it is for this reason there are only three stars even though i am so glad i purchased this. once a neil young fan, always a neil young fan.

EDITED a few days later. so, i've been listening to this on the drive to/from work every day since i wrote this review and i had to come back and tell you how much it is growing on me. mostly i've been learning to listen to what this cd has to offer rather than to listen to it with my expectations. and the cd is so neil young-ish. this cd has some of what he always does best, but it also moves into and expands the musical horizons. so now i rank this 4 stars. if you are a neil young fan you will want to have this in your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein neuer Neil Young
Reviewed in Germany on January 18, 2018
Seit 50 Jahren begleitet mich Neil Young durchs Leben.
