‘Someone called and said Kurt died. I just f*****g lost it.’He has sold over 40 million albums. He’s been in bands that have changed popular music forever. He saw his best friend commit suicide. He starts supergroups. He’s the nicest guy in rock. From Nirvana to Foo Fighters, from brotherhood to bitter rivalry, from breathless highs to lifeless lows, Paul Brannigan gives an unparalleled, intimate and extraordinary account of the life and times of Dave Grohl. In 1990, little-known punk-metal upstarts Nirvana added a new drummer to the band. They were soon to become a global phenomenon – but as we all know, things went wrong. Dave's friend Kurt, frontman of Nirvana, took his own life, plunging the band and their future into chaos. His friends’ grief was mirrored by worldwide sorrow to an unprecedented degree.Defying expectations, a knack that was soon to become his trademark, Grohl refused to see it as the end. In 1995 his new band, the Foo Fighters, rose to join the pantheon of rock deities. The 'wonder years' were by no means calm. The spotlit existence imposed by his celebrity status, the bellowed vilification by his critics and his high-speed lifestyle proved a dangerous cocktail. With an account of Grohl’s life that is more personal than anything written before, more startling, more thrilling, more heart-rending and more inspiring, Paul Brannigan reveals Dave fully for the first time. This is the story of the man who changed music forever. And he’s not finished yet.

This book is a good read. I was interested in finding a biography on him just to get his side of the story about him rerecording nearly all of the drum tracks on Color and the Shape (which I did) but was glad that the book ended up being a good read. I had no idea how much he was a part of the 80s DC punk scene and there was a lot of good info about that, his upbringing and introduction into music, even what songs were the first ones he did all of the parts for fully on his own (including a Scream song and a tape he put out quietly and without specific reference so that people wouldn't know it was him). I also appreciated how the author gives a lot of backstory or goes into detail that's not necessarily about Dave but still pertinent to the story or at least interesting. What I like about rock biographies, specifically those of people/bands who I was into in the 90s, is the backstory on other bands they they were in, references to other bands that were popular at the time that relate to the time period (that I can relate to), and to other bands that they toured with and this book does all of that. I actually read a library copy first but decided to buy it here on Amazon so I can share it and read it again sometime.

There was a lot of writing in this book, but it was pointed, so it was fine with me. Other, not so enormous fans, might have hated it.

This is a great book. I have always found Dave Grohl fascinating. As a Nirvana fan, I got to know all of the members of the band and after Cobain's death, Grohl and Noveselic forged ahead in different directions. Grohl is an amazing guy with the ability to contribute to a lot of band's, as well as, create his own group the Foo Fighters.

This book covers his entire life. His time with Nirvana is given only equal time, so you get to learn about his first bands and all of his collaborations with the same level of detail. It provided a lot of revelations for me because I simply didn't know how driven he was to create music. This is the book of the who, what and why in Dave's life and a beautiful bit of hindsight into each step of the way.

I put this book down being inspired by Grohl, who's consistently created great music. It's something you'll learn is his purpose for living.

This is a thoroughly entertaining and engaging read. Brannigan does a great job of recounting Grohl’s DC punk origins, his Nirvana rocket ride, and his Foo Fighters ascendancy. He fills in a lot of gaps for me. Grohl’s proud connection with his past means we get a revolving door of characters exiting returning.

Let me start by saying that I am a huge Dave Grohl fan, so I am very biased. Also, I prefer autobiographies much more than biographies and many of my criticisms center around the fact that the book would be much better if it was written by Dave himself, I know that's not quite fair, but I think that the author could have done a better job (hence only 3 stars).

The first few chapters on Dave's early life (up to about page 120) were dull and lacked coherence. The author seemed more interested in name dropping other bands in the "underground DC punk scene" than talking about Grohl's life. I didn't buy the book to hear about how good other underground punk bands were during this time. I understand that they were a major influence on him, but just say that, no need to go into exhaustive detail in naming each band and the front-man/guitarist/drummer etc.I wish he would have talked more about Grohl's early life.

The book really comes to life when Grohl joins Nirvana. The author dedicates quite a large portion of the book to this part of his life, even though Grohl's stint as the drummer only lasted a few years. I didn't mind this, however, since Nirvana was such a great band and I enjoyed learning more about them.

The majority of Grohl's musical career has been during his time as the Foo Fighter's front man (16 years and counting) and yet this is only about a third of the book. The author decided to just sum up most of what was done in the Foo Fighters in short, sometimes bland, paragraphs. Despite this, I greatly enjoyed learning more about this time and I look forward to Grohl eventually writing and autobiography.

All in all I am happy that i read it, just because I am such a huge Dave Grohl fan, but it does leave something more to be desired. I have no idea what book those other critics above were reading, like how Buffalo News said "Getty Images Offers a thorough--if unauthorized--biography touching on all aspects of Grohl's career, and paints a fully detailed portrait of the man." I didn't read it that way at all, but to each his own. The author points out many times in the book how Grohl is reluctant to let anyone close to him and would prefer to be more private, so how can anyone get a full picture of a man like that?

This was a gift for my husband who has been a long time fan of Dave Grohl's and both Nirvana and Foo Fighters. He has enjoyed the book so far!

A lot of punk back story (that didn't include Dave), which I didn't know much about so that was interesting. A couple of Dave's high school band stories were so funny I was lol & crying! Excellent. :)
