Although, those questions are, indeed, important, the most important question is whether "Humble Pie" remained a viable force on the music scene after Frampton's departure. The answer is, wholeheartedly, YES!! Did the band miss Frampton's creative influence? Of course, they did. But, he moved on to do his thing and the Pie moved forward with another fantastic guitarist, "Clem" Clemson. Marriott brought in the right guy, without a doubt.
"Smokin'" is a terrific follow-up to "Rock On" and finds Steve Marriott & Company remaining at the peak of their collective creativity. There is not a bad or weak song on the album. All four members brought their "A" game to the studio to record this essential rock album. Both Rock On and Smokin' are testaments to the greatness of the individual members of Humble Pie as well as the band itself. Smokin' takes off where the previous album ended and continues to blast its listeners with straight-ahead rock and roll. Humble Pie also found itself one of the most memorable single releases of the time "30 Days in the Hole". But, don't buy this album for that song alone. There are eight other songs here that are just as worthy of your appreciation. "Smokin'" cemented Humble Pie's ability to produce quality studio recordings and added great music to an already stellar live concert set.
So, was Humble Pie's viability in question after releasing "Smokin'"? Not one bit. Buy this album and play it often. You'll never regret it! Peace.
This review is of the 2006 pressing by Universal/Japan [UICY-6230], which comes in a standard jewel case with an 'obi' stating, "My Generation, My Music" at the top. The street release date of this pressing is 6-21-2006. The only "extra" within this release is a Japanese/English lyric sheet. There are no liner notes, pictures or any other items considered as 'extras'. In fact, there is basically NO DIFFERENCE at all between this release and the standard U.S. release as there has been NO remastering of this pressing. The sound is the same sub-par, poor quality analogue to digital transfer from the late 1980's. I DO recommend that you buy this pressing, but only if you are unable to find the 2007 or 2009 remastered versions of Smokin'.
