The adage goes that a band has its entire career to create its first album, and the Wilson sisters, Ann and Nancy, never seemed able to top Dreamboat Annie, certainly one of rock's all-time strongest debut LPs. In fact, by the time they recorded this eponymous effort after switching labels, the industry had pretty much written them off as has-beens. Strangely, the 1985 release became one of the biggest hits of their career, scoring five hit songs. Of course, this was also where the band succumbed to outside tunesmiths and synthesizer-heavy MOR power ballads. Producer Ron Nevision even has Ann at times trying to emulate Madonna. Not a new direction but, frankly, a new band. --Bill Holdship

What Dreamboat Annie did for the 70's, their self-titled album, the 8th in their studio line, did for the 80's. Teaming up with some professional songwriters and producer Ron Nevison (Europe, Ozzy Osbourne, KISS, Survivor, Jefferson Starship, Chicago, etc.), Ann and Nancy Wilson reinvented their look and sound for the decade and produced their best-selling album, their first and only album to reach no. 1, and their first no. 1 single. The first four tracks (all of which were released as singles) give a good taste of what Heart would offer up on this album.
You get your upbeat, energetic, chugga-chugga hard rock guitar riff in opener "If Looks Could Kill." Then "What About Love" gives you a melancholy, mid-tempo, lyrically-heartfelt ballad, but in spite of those characteristics it is filled with emotion that only Ann can deliver in song and music that helps her cause immensely. Next is "Never," which is yet another ballad. This time, however, the sad sound is replaced with a more upbeat, happy feel. Synths are very big in all these songs, much like moogs and flutes in their early material. Arena Rock bands were big on hard rockers, but at the same time always hit it real big on the charts with the ballads.
The band's first no. 1 single came in the form of "These Dreams," and given the time of this album's release it is not at all hard to see why. For one thing all the instrumental leads are synths. The drums are electric too, and only the vocals and bass are not synthesized. This is perhaps the most mellow of all Heart's songs. For a long time I myself refused to even consider it a song of theirs, but it became a convincing factor in my purchase of this album. This song truly shows what Nevison's synth-happy production can do for bands: help them make it big. While "If Looks Could Kill" failed to crack the top 50 and only peaked at 54, the synth-and-guitar-driven balladry of "What About Love" and "Never" pushed both to the top 10. Later on, "Nothin' At All" hit the 10 spot as well, and it employed another sound that was popular at the time: straight-up pop rock.
This style combined with the hard rockers (which also include highlights "The Wolf" and "Shell Shock"), the ballads (employed in yet another highlight, "What He Don't Know"), and the synth-driven soft pop was an easy formula for mid-80's success. The only songs I might consider filler are "All Eyes" and "Nobody Home." This album may look bizarre when paired with the classics like Dreamboat Annie or Little Queen, but it's definitely one of the band's very finest works and one very fine example of what the formula for 80's success truly should sound like. Yeah, I know, just because people are successful doesn't mean they're good... well this, my friends, absolutely does.

Sin duda alguna, es un álbum esencial para cualquier coleccionista; la edición es una reproducción del original de 1985, con un inserto que contiene la letra de las canciones; y, cabe destacar que el disco no es de 180g.
