Recording information: North Vine Studios; NRG Recording Services. Unknown Contributor Role: Tim Cronin. Following 1995's DOPES TO INFINITY, which contained the successful single "Negasonic Teenage Warhead", Monster Magnet is back with a vengeance. POWERTRIP is a phat, funky, heavy, danceable record that assaults the senses. These guys rock, but with a flair and excitement that incorporates some other musical styles as well. Monster Magnet are a metal band for the 90's--plenty of thunderous riffage, accented by various other elements thrown into the mix. While POWERTRIP's first two tracks, "Crop Circle" and the title cut, are straight ahead heavy tunes, "Space Lord" ventures into some funky territory. With an acoustic intro, the track is reminiscent of early Red Hot Chilli Peppers or Mindfunk. "Temple Of Your Dreams" has a great dance groove and "19 Witches" has a Pulp Fictionish surf guitar feel to it. "See You In Hell" is straightforward rock with some keyboards thrown in, while "Tractor" goes the punk route. POWERTRIP, while definitely a heavy album, provides enough different styles to appeal to fans of any of the above mentioned genres. All in all, Monster Magnet goes outside the boundaries of traditional metal to produce a record of groove-laden depth.

New Jersey white-trash visionary and Monster Magnet frontman Dave Wyndorf spent most of the '80s and '90s dropping acid, popping pills, inhaling pungent weed, and churning out sludgy, drug-induced paeans to hedonistic abandon. And when he finally came down from his cosmic cloud, he realized the rest of the world was as messed up as he was. Addiction loomed everywhere--for power, money, and sex--and all Wyndorf could do was take out his notepad and marvel at the chaos. Monster Magnet's fourth album is a seething document of decay, corruption, and consumerism. "When you get tired of their crap, baby / Move over here and maybe buy some of mine," he shouts on the title track, while crashing power chords, throbbing bass, and tumbling drum fills resonate around him. Musically, Powertrip is less rambling and psychedelic than the group's past albums, owing as much to such confrontational garage rockers as the Stooges and Blue Cheer as to Black Sabbath. It's also more experimental. "Crop Circle" roars with blowtorch guitars and a circular groove; "19 Witches" and "Your Lies Become You" shiver with twanging surf-punk guitars; and "Space Lord" buzzes like a swarm of angry wasps. A powerful trip for sure, or as Wyndorf says in "Bummer," "If you want to spank your demons and make them pay. Baby I'm your man of the hour." --Jon Wiederhorn

I discovered Monster Magnet on YouTube. My buddy shared a couple of songs, and I let the program go, listening to more in the band's catalog. I'm now 56 and grew up on the Beatles, Cat Stevens and Elton John. My first album was Woodstock 2. I bought Peter Frampton Comes Alive in 10th grade when I had moved to yet another new city and was again the new guy with zero friends. That led to Alice Cooper, Kiss and Led Zeppelin. My musical tastes kind of stalled with AC/DC and new music to me is from the 1990s. I say this for perspective. So it makes sense that I'd like "Powertrip." I'd heard "Space Lord," the dominant single off the album, but I didn't pursue the band. In 1998 when Monster Magnet released Powertrip, I was working to advance my career at a new newspaper and was focusing on a move to a new city and buying my first decent house, my third. So records weren't at the top of my priority list. Family and income to support that family came first. But now I've got a chance to listen to music again, this band has become one that intrigues me. I play the record often. Disclaimer: I downloaded the tune. I put it on a CD, but I'm developing a pretty substantial electronic catalog.

Aside from having unmentionable appendages dipped in plastic ( Atomic Clock ), getting rid of an unwanted baby in a Jersey landfill ( See You In Hell ) and cashing Satan's checks while firmly grasping said appendage in hand ( 3rd Eye Landslide ), Monster Magnet's music never ceases to amaze me.

Powertrip is the second album I owned from MM and Dave Wyndorf's songwriting keeps me reeling. I own all of their albums now, but
God Says No [Explicit ] and Powertrip are my favorite two albums.

They call this music Stoner Rock, but it seems more real to me than regular Metal or Rock, because Dave Wyndorf tells it like it is: he's all about women, money, pills and understanding. It does not get any better than that.

Like all MM albums I love the guitars, but the overall feeling I get is anticipation for another album.

This is a really good album and the vinyl re-issue sound is stupendous. If you are familiar with this album and have a turntable this is the version to own. If you like your metal to have some garage/punk influence with a little comic book lore thrown in Monster magnet might be for you. try sampling some of their stuff and check them out.

180gm double lp re-issue with loads of bonus material, liner notes and printed inner sleeves. Worth every penny. LP is not gatefold though which was surprising.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true hard rock classic from a band that should be HUGE!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 23, 2016
God damn, I love this band. Quite frankly, Monster Magnet should have been much bigger than they are. I have no idea why, that after the original release of this album, they didn't continue to grow as they had done. They got to the heights of headlining London Astoria sized venues (2000+), but couldn't quite make it to the next tier, such as Brixton Academy or Hammersmith Odeon (3,500+), etc.

Still, not that I could care less how many people are turning out to see them these days, cos I know I'll always been there to hear quality music such as this pumped out of a PA at high volume.

Containing the 'hit singles' Powertrip and Space Lord, plus quality deeper cuts such as Bummer and See You In Hell, this album is an all-round heavy rock classic.

Now known for being one of the leaders in the so-called Stoner Rock scene, Monster Magnet had been delivering huge slabs of psychedelic garage rock for many years before the release of this album. Touring with the likes of Soundgarden and White Zombie, and all the other bands that didn't seem to fit in with the usual heavy rock or metal offerings of the day.

With the creative mind of Dave Wyndorf at the helm, and a solid band including the stunning guitar player Ed Mundell, Monster Magnet never stood still. Each release delivered something new. Something extra. And on this release they delivered a bunch of tunes that baited the main-stream hard rock and metal crowd.

Their videos got regular rotation on MTV, and they landed a UK support slot with Rob Zombie (what a line-up that was!), but I just think that the record company didn't know what to do with them, because they couldn't be easily classified.

I bought the original when it was released, but now I get to grab myself a new 2CD version, which includes a rather superb cover of Kick Out The Jams (among other b-sides), and a run of live tracks. The liner notes are a nice bonus.

If you ever considered buying this or any other Monster Magnet album, but for some reason never got around to it, just do yourself a favour and treat yourself to this. You'll not be disappointed.
