While Mountain's debut album Climbing! is their most celebrated release due to the now classic status of "Mississippi Queen", their second album, Nantucket Sleighride, is just as strong and is an underrated classic. More varied than Climbing!, Nantucket Sleighride is higher on mid-tempo cerebral tracks penned by Felix Pappalardi and his wife Gail Collins and less on the heavy boogie tracks of Leslie West. The underrated Corky Laing really makes a statement here as his drumming is a highlight throughout, particularly on the wicked opener "Don't Look Around" and the cerebral title track. These tracks along with "Tired Angels", a tribute to Jimi Hendrix that is reminiscent of the Band during the choruses and "Traveling In the Dark", are the heart of the album and are all stellar. That's not to sell Leslie's contributions short as "You Can't Get Away!" is a strong track that would have fit in perfectly on Climbing! and the single "The Animal Trainer and the Toad" is a killer as well. Steve Knight's keyboard lines are also more prominent throughout, especially on the aforementioned best tracks. The remaining tracks, "My Lady" and "The Great Train Robbery", and the instrumental "Taunta", are also very good. While many may believe that Mountain were just a one hit wonder with "Mississippi Queen", Nantucket Sleighride proves that statement false and is a heck of an album.

This would be 4 1/2 stars if Amazon would allow halves. The best part of this CD is the incredible sound that the remaster has produced. From the remastered sound to the song dedications to the brief but heartfelt notes, Nantucket Sleighride really stands out from the slew of early '70s album remasters. You get the feeling in listening to the tracks, and reading the notes by Leslie West and Corky Laing, that this CD was a labor of love on the part of all involved. Mountain made it big at Woodstock and had a brief run at superstardom. Still, even a at the time I always thought of them as sub-Creme with serious fantasies of power trio glory. In other words, they were good, but nowhere near as good as they aspired to be. I could almost imagine Lesley sleeping in a bed under a massive Jack Bruce poster and dreaming 'if only' and 'I coulda been a contender' fantasies.

In the day, I had all of Mountain's records and NS was the one that I played most. They tried so hard you couldn't help but love them. Felix did a superior job of producing, and adding vocals and instrumentals to help shape a sound that was just out of reach of the band buy themselves. My God did they try. But their albums always sounded muddy to me. Like a dinosaur struggling to free itself from a fast sinking tar pit. This remaster confirms to me that there really was something there that was worth the patient and repeated listenings. This is damn good music in a style that has long been out of fashion. If you like this one, try Beck, Bogart and Apice live in Japan to hear where the music could go given the chops and Jeff Beck's guitar acumen.

If its so good, why not 5 stars? Greed. The "Traveling in the Dark" live track reminds me of how good Mountain could be as a live band. There is a mountain of good live material out there that could have been included in this CD. I would have liked to see the 80 minute time limit used up--a live album to go with the studio album.

As it is, this is a fine remaster.

Great cd. Thanks.

Mississippi Queen is synonymous with Mountain, for better and worse. They recorded numerous songs as good as this, including some which are on this album. The opening track, Don't look Around is a fantastic wall of sound, a fast paced rocker powered by Laing's amazing drumming. The title track is beautiful and tragic and standout piece of music by a group absolutely at the top of their form. You could say that this album is not as immediately catchy as their debut; its strengths take a little more time to appreciate. But this is hard rock as it should be, with brilliant musicianship, stunning production, intelligent lyrics and two contrasting and imposing vocalists. Play it loud and be prepared to be knocked out. Mountain were awesome.

This is another one of those bands that is so under rated that it's silly. I first bought this album back in the 70's, love it then and still love it now. A great band that never got it's due, a great band that made great music. Never got to see them live. But I read that they put on an excellent show. Best known for the song "Mississippi Queen", but that was just one of their great songs. "Nantucket Sleighride", was another great song. They wrote great songs and toured most of their lives. One great band, you really need to check this band out. They can rock & roll with the best of them. Don't pass up a chance to buy this cd cause it's one of the best cd's I ever owned.

sounds as good now as it did when it first came out! we saw them at the Rainbow in 72 and somewhere I have a Corky Laing drumstick after all these years!I'm not that sold on the additional track as there surely must be other versions of other tracks which might be slightly better but if any group stands the test of time then this is surely them! So any addition to their repertoire must be welcomed....all of the original albums are excellent but Live is possibly the best representation of them at their peak! coupled with the superb 'Stormy Monday' on 'Over the Top' it might be all the Mountain you might need...........

Repertoire seem to have a good eye for great albums that fall off the radar and this hard rocking gem is a perfect example. The yelling vocals and powerchording may sound somewhat derivative but the material is superb and the execution vital. "Don't Look Around", with its thunderous opening, is irresistible hard rock. Don't underestimate Steve Knight's organ-playing, though, which hauntingly underlines the guitar across the album. The title track is the centrepiece, smouldering, changing gear, exploding into that little section made famous as the theme to the 1970s TV programme, "Weekend World". Other major highlights are "My Lady" and "Travelling In The Dark", but there are no poor tracks.

As ever, Repertoire's presentation (gatefold facsimile, booklet, original artwork) is superb. You've got no excuse for not buying this if you like 1970s hard rock.
