I saw Uriah Heep on stage in 1977. The drums and bass started a thunderous beat, the lights came up. John Lawton turned to the audience, skin-tight black leather pants, tiger-stripe shirt, blue eye shadow, feather earrings, frizzed out hair, receding hairline, homely. I loved it. They opened the show with "Do You Know." Ken Hensley blew me away with the minimoog solo.
I didn't realize until that night that the band also had a new bass player. Having been a fan of Bowie and the Spiders From Mars, I was delighted to see Trevor Bolder playing bass.
John Lawton was a good replacement for their former singer, David Byron. In my opinion, John Lawton was a better singer.
This is a great sounding, well produced album.

I've been looking for this exact CD for a long time. No remastering, no useless bonus tracks, the sound is close to that of the LP analogue recording. And that's good folks. "Firefly" is one of the best albums in UH catalogue, and surely the best one with John Lawton as a frontman. Songs are short but beautiful and rocking. "Hanging tree", "Been away too long", "Wise man", "Rollin' on" and "Sympathy" are simply the best, but the rest are nearly as good. Never felt such a thrill listening to these songs since my first listen to "Firefly" LP. One of my best purchases in a long while. The CD I bought is pre-owned but the disc and artwork are in perfect condition. Really 5 stars to the album and to the seller!

I like this album..John Lawton has a very good voice but I'm just not sure if it was right for UH..Then I watched a video from this time period with his eye makeup and his mannerism's..Kinda' turned me off. And I noticed that the 3 Heep albums he was on, not one made it into the top 40..Which all of their others always did...Solid album though...

While these guys were sometimes snubbed by the recording industry I always thought that their music was great. I love the song "The Hanging Tree"

Many good songs from Hensley. This was more closer to Demons & Wizards just nothing real heavy. Lawton did 3 LP'S with Heep. When you look at the lead singers they had Heep has been very lucky they have had good pipe's belting out there songs. Yes they have been blessed by the VOCAL GODS. Maybe some of the LP covers could have had better art work but music wise? They have an always will hold there own.

Firefly was a pleasant surprise for me. Just from what I had heard on Youtube, I knew I wasn't getting the progish or proto-metal Heep of the early 70's with David Byron on vocals but, honestly, this album ranks up there with one of Heep's best collection of songs in my opinion. John Lawton is an incredible talent and though, nothing like David Byron in terms of style, gives a whole new feel to a classic band. For those not familiar with the John Lawton mini-era of Uriah Heep, imagine if David Coverdale had joined Heep. Not that Lawton is a replica of Coverdale, but he definitely has that bluesier edge to his vocals. The operatic "Danish Fjord" (as another reviewer called Byron's vocals) are gone but have been replaced by a more soulful, pop-sentimentality.
The songs are all very solid and though the organ and guitars have been tempered a bit in the mix, the overall sound is very cohesive. I honestly bought the album for Sympathy which is as catchy a rock song as you are ever going to find. The quality of the rest of the album is the pleasant surprise since I was sort of expecting a lot of filler! The Hanging Tree, Been Away Too Long and Firefly are the strongest songs other than Sympathy but, again, none of the songs are bad.
If you are expecting classic, David Byron-era Heep, you may not like this; however, if you have an open-mind and enjoy well-crafted AOR songs then this album is for you.

Premier album avec Lawton au chant. Comment remplacer Byron?
