About us

Founded upon owner Brian Slagel’s enduring drive to find great bands and get their music out to as many people as possible, since 1982 Metal Blade has brought wave after wave of powerful, innovative, and often genre-defining music to the ever-hungry metal masses. It is this ethos that has seen Metal Blade build up a stunning and diverse catalogue, weather the various storms facing any independent label, and in an age of declining record sales boast the most successful years of its existence as it strides into its fourth decade.

Reign in Blood is a five-star album. Is Hell Awaits as good as Reign in Blood? Musically, lyrically, and production-wise, no. So why does Hell Awaits deserve five stars? Well, as I see it, these two albums are masterpieces, but with this significant difference: Reign in Blood is a masterpiece of major label thrash metal, Hell Awaits is a masterpiece of indie label thrash. Compare Reign in Blood to other bands' major label debuts, like Metallica's Kill `Em All, Megadeth's Peace Sells, Anthrax's Spreading the Disease, Testament's The Legacy, or Overkill's Under the Influence, and it stands out as the most cohesive and potent album in the group. Same goes for Hell Awaits when compared to Killing is My Business, Fistful of Metal, or Feel the Fire (and even though The Legacy was on a major label, I think Hell Awaits tops it). I know, quite a few other good thrash bands released stellar albums in that time period, but just comparing Slayer's early albums to those of the top groups in the genre shows how strong their output was from the start.

As so many others have explained, Hell Awaits bridged the gap between Show No Mercy and Reign in Blood. It retained some of the raw power of the debut, but the sound became more "evil;" darker, faster, less early speed metal influence, more "serious" tone. Accordingly, this album helped shape the thrash genre and distinguish it from speed metal, hardcore, crossover, or any other heavy metal sub-genre. The seven songs on Hell Awaits are top-notch examples of early thrash when it was at its most unrestrained, before commercial success began to exert its influence on the genre's direction toward more palatable heavy music. Slayer was a new, popular band on the verge of major stardom, and this release shows them beginning to understand what they should sound like. They would fully realize that sound only a year later with Reign in Blood, but how about for 1985, when thrash was still mostly relegated to independent labels? I'm sure people would argue that a few albums equaled Hell Awaits, but its status as one of the elite of the pre-1986 time period justifies a rank of five stars, even though Reign in Blood, judged on the merits alone, is stronger.

You will never get me to say anything bad about any Slayer album ever.

The record quality is pretty standard, no glaring issues such as the absent bass on my Reign In Blood record. The music is astounding! Definitely can tell how its from a different time, also obvious that no one can do it like this anymore not even Slayer! Hell Awaits is probably #2 or #3 as far as favorite Slayer records. I believe this and especially what came earlier is where Slayer earned the description of punk/thrash. If you love heavy music this is a great throwback, give it a chance!

If you're a fan of a classic, reverbed-out thrash sound, Hell Awaits is an absolute masterpiece. Araya's vocal delivery, falsetto screams and all, pairs perfectly with Jeff Hanneman's insane guitarwork. Just take the plunge on this one!

The most evil sounding American album as of 1985 (though Possessed’s ‘Seven Churches’ would soon up the ante), Slayer’s second studio LP, ‘Hell Awaits, was a monster of demonic cacophony. As it may have been a look to the progressive future of their signature thrash sound, ‘Hell Awaits’ tended to hide those progressive tendencies behind a wall of absolute brutality. But the songs were more complex if less melodic than on their previous EP and debut LP. This is where it hurts ‘Hell Awaits’ because there is not as much to differenciate the songs. The classic title cut and “Kill Again” are probably the songs that standout the most for me though the first third or so of “At Dawn They Sleep” is also distinctive. Much of the second half however is a speed blur with not a lot to make the songs truly memorable. Will you enjoy ‘Hell Awaits’ if you are an unabashed metalhead? Absolutely, and the performances are outstanding, especially Tom Arraya and Dave Lombardo, not that King/Hanneman incorporated embarrass themselves but again, the riffs seemed awfully repetitive. It would take one more record for Slayer to reach their pinnacle sound but for many, ‘Hell Awaits’ was an exhilarating rush through death and destruction, a true Dante’s Inferno. But for me, I think they needed to reach that ‘Reign In Blood’ stage before their legacy could really be documented for all time as metal’s most lethal foursome. I have seen the darkened depths of hell indeed….

I define this album as the most punk-ish album ever released by Slayer, "Kill Again" is a perfect example, all instruments are present in the mix (raw and primitive - remember it was released in 1985), particularly the bass, here it is preponderant and it shines in songs like At Dawn They Sleep - have to mention Dave Lombardo bashes his drumset in that memorable roll towards the end of it - not too much to say about him, I absolutely love his performance here, Necrophiliac, Hell Awaits, Praise of Death... A must for any die hard Slayer and extreme metal fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars metal blade + slayer = il top
