Product Description

Damn The Torpedoes, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' third album (and first on Backstreet/MCA,) proved to be the breakthrough for the singer-songwriter-guitarist and his band (guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch). The album was released on October 19, 1979, after a highly publicized lawsuit in which Petty made a groundbreaking stand for artist rights, refusing to be sold by one record company to another without his consent. Damn The Torpedoes became the group's first Top 10, remaining at #2 for seven weeks (only Pink Floyd's The Wall kept it from the top). It sold over 5-million copies, and had 3 top 40 hits and 4 top 5 rock-radio hits. The album was an immediate critical success, with Rolling Stone declaring Damn The Torpedoes "the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album we have all been waiting for." Produced by Petty and Jimmy Iovine, the album reached double platinum quickly and catapulted the band to arena performances where they played such classic cuts as the infectious Top 10 hit "Don't Do Me Like That," blistering rockers "Refugee" and "Here Comes My Girl," and the exhilarating "Even The Losers." Bursting with full speed ahead American rock `n' roll, the album brought together rock, folk, country and blues in what has become Petty and the Heartbreakers' signature style. The release garnered Petty his first Rolling Stone Magazine cover in February 1980. He has appeared on four covers since then. In 2003, nearly 25 years after its release, Rolling Stone honored Damn The Torpedoes on its list of "the greatest albums ever made," and in 2002 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, during their first year of eligibility. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are one of the very few artists to score a top five record on the Billboard charts in five consecutive decades.

So glad I ordered this. This is the best sounding 'Damn the Torpedoes" I have yet experienced. Vinyl is flat and quiet and the dynamic range has my Big Ole Power Meters on the Carver M500t amp really bouncing. Of course the music is great, its Tom. RIP bro

Cassette arrived in better than expected shape. Shipping was as advertised and on time. Artwork sleeve was in greatcondition, only very slight discoloration. The cassette itself was in very good to excellent condition. I played side A, with no issues at all. Full enjoyment! Thank you.

What a great job on this deluxe edition. Not only is the remastering amazing, but the content is stellar. No throwaway tracks here! The inclusion of "Casa Dega", "Nowhere", "Surrender" and "It's Raining Again" are true gems. All four songs fit perfectly with the rest of the songs on Torpedoes. I mixed them in with the other original nine songs and I was having a blast listening to the new expanded 13 song "Damn the Torpedoes" album. I'm baffled why it took 35 years for these songs to finally get put back on the album where they belong. They really make Torpedoes such a stronger record. For example, by placing "It's Raining Again" right before "Louisiana Rain" is a great lead in to the epic album closer. Also, the two live in the studio demos of "Casa Dega" and :Refugee" are pretty awesome as well. :Casa Dega" is just such a great, slow groove of a song that really balances out the tone of the record with the many rocker tracks. The demo is a nice alternate take on that song. The demo of "Refugee" is just a great live run through of that song in the studio. It's really cool to hear it played raw and rocked out liked that. Awesome stuff. Couldn't ask for more.

If you're a CD nut like me and want the best quality remasters out there but struggle to find reviews of them on here, I'll be the one to review which remastered release to get (the 2001 or the 2010 version). I, for one, think there are too many reviews of the album itself rather than how the remastering is done, and whether it's good or bad. We all know how great this album is. It's a classic, one of Tom Petty's best for sure. Now onto the remastering.

The remasters available are the 2001 edition done by Joe Gastwirt, and the more recent 2010 edition done by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios in Hollywood, CA. Personally, I prefer the former because Joe Gastwirt also did the 2001 remasters for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' self-titled debut album, You're Gonna Get It, Hard Promises, and Long After Dark, and Gastwirt is just as all-around great mastering engineer in my opinion, having also remastered most of the Grateful Dead's catalog, and Crosby, Stills & Nash's releases in the early '90s. The new remaster is fine, but seems like more of a cash grab than anything. I respect Bernie Grundman and all, but if you already have the 2001 remaster of this album, keep it. And if you don't, buy either, but I'd go for the 2001 version personally.

This is a must have for Tom Petty fans, not a bad song on the album.

If aliens came down and asked "What is Tom Petty?" I would play "Damn the Torpedoes" for them. This album is unquestionably a classic and the turning point for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as this the one that put them on the map. Tom was a prolific song writer and went on to have enormous success and countless hits after this album all of which I appreciate but in my opinion "Damn the Torpedoes" is the best era of Tom Petty due to the raw rock attitude of this album typical of a new young band still not too caught up with the demands of commercial success. Songs like "Refugee", "Don't do me like that", Here comes my girl" and "Even the losers" were huge hits for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers yet they exude the integrity of songs written from the stand point of heartfelt passion. This was "Tom's Born in the USA" or "Thriller." Definitely an album for the desert island list.

I have later Tom Petty Albums that I have loved and listened to for years. Namely "Fully Moon Fever" which has been my go to CD when I want to listen to some good music and can't decide what to play. I suppose that " Full Moon Fever" has been his landmark album. So back to the album I'm suppose to write about, there some great songs on this album which I have liked for years (and were hit singles back in the day). I enjoyed hearing those again but failed to hear any other tracks that caught my attention so I put the CD away and have yet to give it another listen. In fairness to Tom I should give his earliest recording for MCA Records another chance. We all have our own tastes and expectations in music so to some they like every track one the album as I do with "Full Moon Fever" and "Something In The Air". Just get a copy to listen to or stream "Damn The Torpedoes"and see what you think. You might like it better than I did.

5 Stars for Tom Petty but what a shame from Amazon! Lately I have bought three CDs from Amazon and everyone of them had the cover damaged. The last one was smashed and I pay for prime. As for the CD, well it is one awesome album from one awesome bands. Everyone knows the story about this album. This remastered edition is really good and the price is incredible. That being said I bough the same album on Blue Ray with extra tracks with a documentary from Best Buy and I wish I had made that move first. It won't hurt to have a copy of this master piece though.

Extremely fast delivery by Amazon. It arrived (together with a book I'd ordered) the day after I'd placed my order. Postage was free as well. What great customer service!

I'd had this Album on cassette for over 40yrs but decided it was time to replace it with a new CD as the tape quality had deteriorated quite badly. Paid a very good price of only £6.99 for such an amazing Album. An added bonus is that the song lyrics are all contained in the liner notes booklet.

There are only 9 tracks on the Album but WHAT GREAT TRACKS THEY ARE! Definitely one of the BEST Albums of all time. Opens with "Refugee" which has one of the best and most instantly recognizable music intros of all time. Total perfection. This was the track that I credit with dragging me away from my love for Punk Rock and opening my eyes to other forms of Rock music. There are no bad tracks on the Album but if I'm honest though, "Century City" is in my opinion, the weakest track but certainly not in any way to reduce my 5 star rating. Apart from "Refugee", my other personal favourite tracks are, "Here Comes My Girl", Tom's vocals on this track are simply stunning. He had without doubt, one of the best and most distinctive Rock voices of all time. Only Jimi Jamison and Steve Perry, have bettered him. "Even The Losers", just possibly my personal favourite. A very positive track, despite the title and "You Tell Me", what great hook lines. This is an Album to replay over and over and get fresh enjoyment each time it's played. (I still don't know what "Damn The Torpedoes" means though)

This is a very highly recommended purchase. R.I.P. Tom Petty, Your music is so sadly missed.
