Product Description
Damn The Torpedoes, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' third album (and first on Backstreet/MCA,) proved to be the breakthrough for the singer-songwriter-guitarist and his band (guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch). The album was released on October 19, 1979, after a highly publicized lawsuit in which Petty made a groundbreaking stand for artist rights, refusing to be sold by one record company to another without his consent. Damn The Torpedoes became the group's first Top 10, remaining at #2 for seven weeks (only Pink Floyd's The Wall kept it from the top). It sold over 5-million copies, and had 3 top 40 hits and 4 top 5 rock-radio hits. The album was an immediate critical success, with Rolling Stone declaring Damn The Torpedoes "the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album we have all been waiting for." Produced by Petty and Jimmy Iovine, the album reached double platinum quickly and catapulted the band to arena performances where they played such classic cuts as the infectious Top 10 hit "Don't Do Me Like That," blistering rockers "Refugee" and "Here Comes My Girl," and the exhilarating "Even The Losers." Bursting with full speed ahead American rock `n' roll, the album brought together rock, folk, country and blues in what has become Petty and the Heartbreakers' signature style. The release garnered Petty his first Rolling Stone Magazine cover in February 1980. He has appeared on four covers since then. In 2003, nearly 25 years after its release, Rolling Stone honored Damn The Torpedoes on its list of "the greatest albums ever made," and in 2002 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, during their first year of eligibility. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are one of the very few artists to score a top five record on the Billboard charts in five consecutive decades.

The remasters available are the 2001 edition done by Joe Gastwirt, and the more recent 2010 edition done by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios in Hollywood, CA. Personally, I prefer the former because Joe Gastwirt also did the 2001 remasters for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' self-titled debut album, You're Gonna Get It, Hard Promises, and Long After Dark, and Gastwirt is just as all-around great mastering engineer in my opinion, having also remastered most of the Grateful Dead's catalog, and Crosby, Stills & Nash's releases in the early '90s. The new remaster is fine, but seems like more of a cash grab than anything. I respect Bernie Grundman and all, but if you already have the 2001 remaster of this album, keep it. And if you don't, buy either, but I'd go for the 2001 version personally.

I'd had this Album on cassette for over 40yrs but decided it was time to replace it with a new CD as the tape quality had deteriorated quite badly. Paid a very good price of only £6.99 for such an amazing Album. An added bonus is that the song lyrics are all contained in the liner notes booklet.
There are only 9 tracks on the Album but WHAT GREAT TRACKS THEY ARE! Definitely one of the BEST Albums of all time. Opens with "Refugee" which has one of the best and most instantly recognizable music intros of all time. Total perfection. This was the track that I credit with dragging me away from my love for Punk Rock and opening my eyes to other forms of Rock music. There are no bad tracks on the Album but if I'm honest though, "Century City" is in my opinion, the weakest track but certainly not in any way to reduce my 5 star rating. Apart from "Refugee", my other personal favourite tracks are, "Here Comes My Girl", Tom's vocals on this track are simply stunning. He had without doubt, one of the best and most distinctive Rock voices of all time. Only Jimi Jamison and Steve Perry, have bettered him. "Even The Losers", just possibly my personal favourite. A very positive track, despite the title and "You Tell Me", what great hook lines. This is an Album to replay over and over and get fresh enjoyment each time it's played. (I still don't know what "Damn The Torpedoes" means though)
This is a very highly recommended purchase. R.I.P. Tom Petty, Your music is so sadly missed.
