Editorial Reviews

By mid-1972, with Wilson's focus waning from the Beach Boys to other creative outlets, and his personal and health-related issues mounting, Wilson was producing less music for the band than ever before. They decamped for the Netherlands hoping to jump-start Brian's creative energies. Wilson contributed little to the album, concentrating his musical efforts on Mount Vernon and Fairway, a 10-minute long "musical fairy tale" eventually included with the album as a bonus EP. The title of the bonus EP was named after the intersection where the Love family lived in Los Angeles, and where the Wilsons and Loves would gather for family celebrations back in the 1940s and '50s when Brian, Mike, Carl and Dennis were all growing up. As a concept for a Beach Boys track, "Mount Vernon and Fairway" initially received a less than enthusiastic response from the other band members when Brian first presented the idea to the group, and this only fueled Brian's steadily worsening depression. Eventually, Carl stepped in to produce the recording for Brian, and the decision was made to include the fairy tale in the album package as a separate EP. Brian himself designed the EP's picture sleeve. Although Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale) was narrated by Jack Rieley, the voice of the Pied Piper was supplied by Brian in a slightly grainier-sounding "cartoon" voice. The instrumental tracks for Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale) were later released on Good Vibrations: Thirty years of The Beach Boys as "Fairy Tale Music." Upon the band's return from the Netherlands in the fall, Holland was rejected by Reprise Records for not having a potential hit single. Added to the track list was an unfinished Brian Wilson song "Sail On, Sailor," that he'd originally co-written with Ray Kennedy, and finally completed with the help of Van Dyke Parks, Jack Reiley and Tandyn Almer. It would ultimately become Holland's most famous track. A casualty of the album's tracklist reshuffling was another Fataar/Chaplin tune, written with Mike Love, called "We Got Love." A live version was included on the group's 1973 release The Beach Boys In Concert. Early test pressings of Holland, made in the U.S. and U.K. featured "We Got Love," as did a few hundred copies pressed and sold in Germany. Early French and Canadian pressings of Holland mention "We Got Love" on the jacket, but the song is not on those albums. For this Holland reissue Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions has brought back "We Got Love" as a bonus track!

While I always enjoyed hearing a Beach Boys song on the radio, I never bought their albums … until HOLLAND appeared in 1973. It was an exciting surprise, a new yet logical direction for the band in the wake of SURF'S UP & SUNFLOWER, with both a musical & lyrical richness that fully captured the feeling of the early 1970s, during the slow fade of the counterculture & the rising importance of environmentalism. A Robinson Jeffers poem woven seamlessly into a suite of songs about California? A song about European imperialism & the brutal conquest of America?

Yes, there was all that & more … yet none of it was never preachy or didactic. These were simply great songs, memorable & with great hooks, a subtle use of the Moog, and of course those gorgeous harmonies. The overall mood pervaded the album from start to finish, sometimes rollicking & fun, sometimes pensive & melancholy, always thoughtful & layered. From the mentions of astrology & horoscopes, to the lovingly detailed description of the California landscape, to the ecological message of something like Clear Creak Magazine — does anyone else remember that? — to the touches of whimsy & sorrow, this was 1973 for a lot of us.

And that includes Brian Wilson's fairytale MOUNT VERNON AND FAIRWAY, which just might be a bit much for younger listeners who never experienced the sublimely naïve sincerity of those days, and who may find it impossible to believe that people actually felt & lived that way for even a fleeting magic moment.. It's not something I listen to every time I listen to HOLLAND myself, but every so often I like to return to that time & place, simply to remind myself that yes, it really happened.

I wish the band had continued in this vein, as it could have meant a second life as a creative musical force well into the 1970s. If anyone else has released this album, it would have been hailed as a major work. But as a Beach Boys album it didn't sell well; the nostalgic money-making power of their greatest hits beckoned into the new decade (and into the present); and the Beach Boys soon ceased to be anything other than a beloved oldies act. A shame, because HOLLAND still sounds wonderful today. Even if you think you don't like the Beach Boys, give this album a listen — most highly recommended!

The Boys went to Holland in the early 70s (I believe Brian stayed home in Cali). They were on a sojourn to regroup and remain relevant. The result was Holland.
Holland is a unique record in the Beach Boys canon. It's my favorite, probably because I associate it with so many memories. I would recommend that you listen to the song samples online. Some earnest songs regarding man's conquest of land and sea over centuries, along with a few classic Beach Boys riffs and harmonies.
Standouts are: Sail on Sailor, Trader, Steamboat, Funky Pretty, the medley California Saga, and Only With You.
The last few tracks are a playful mess of ditties that remind me of Harry Nilson. You'll know what I mean when you hear them.

Love the whole original album. The extra "songs", which are more like spoken poems are worthless and I don't bother to listen to them.

I heard this album when it first came out in the 70s and liked many of its songs. It was not the typical Beach Boys music but I thought it was excellent nevertheless. I remember that Brian Wilson was not available at the time but the remainder of the band wanted to continue composing and releasing music. The singer was excellent but was not one of the Beach Boys that I could remember. Still, the other Beach Boys sang with him and that traditional Beach Boys sound is present. Now the album, by itself, is available on CD and has been excellently remastered. The music is crystal clear and the sound quality is as good as you can get.

This is the LP the Beach Boys, minus Brian, went to the Netherlands to record after the disastrous "Smile" recording sessions, and whether Brian was involved or not, most of it is stone brilliant. Even Mike Love's limp little waltz about Big Sur gets woven, to terrific effect, into the album's ecstatic third and fourth tracks, which even includes a poem by Robinson Jeffers. Essential.

This is the greatest Beach Boys LP (my opinion). I bought it on its release in '74. I was able to buy it again, an updated version. It arrived today 22nd march 2021 and I'm delighted. It was packed beautifully and you could see the care the seller took on the packaging. Thank you so much, ClOSEON.
