Masterpiece of an Album

Masterpiece of an Album
"The Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails is a groundbreaking album that pushes the boundaries of industrial rock music and that has always resonated with me. Trent Reznor's raw and emotive vocals combined with the aggressive instrumentation create a dark and immersive listening experience. Each track is meticulously crafted, taking the listener on a journey through themes of despair, addiction, and self-destruction. From the pulsating energy of "Closer" to the haunting melodies of "Hurt," every song leaves a lasting impression. "The Downward Spiral" is a masterpiece that continues to captivate audiences with its raw intensity and emotional depth.

One of the darkest albums. The mainstream appeal creeps through somehow. The story of TDS is one that will keep you up at night analyzing again and again. Dense lyrical themes throughout and Trent's trademark perfectionist production bring one of the best vinyls you can set on and drift away to. Not for the faint of heart, gets better with every listen.

I have been a long time fan of Nine Inch Nails since seeing them live at the first Lalapoloooza festival that was a traveling show in its infancy. I had a cassette copy of “Pretty Hate Machine and eventually a CD version of the album as well. I have looked for this album on vinyl for a few years now and it’s impossible to find for less than $200.00 for a sealed copy. It’s not the first pressing, but it’s actually better sounding than the first pressing which is incredibly difficult to find and very expensive for a used copy. This was the exact same copy I was looking for and I couldn’t believe I got it for such an incredible price. I’m talking less than $50.00. The few copies I have found are way more expensive and they are used copies. I’m not opposed to buying used vinyl, but I’m also picky about what I get in comparison to what the seller describes. I’ve purchased too many vinyl pressings that someone else has mentioned as being NM and it’s more like VG! Everything from scratched vinyl, to seam splits, and the wrong pressing altogether. This is probably the last NIN album that I really like and wanted on vinyl. I have the Deluxe Edition CD version and it sounds really good with a lot of different out takes and different versions of songs. I’m extremely impressed with the seller and the packaging was very professional. It’s still sealed and is in Mint condition, as I have not had time to listen to the album yet. But I have heard this vinyl pressing on a friend’s turntable and it’s a very well mastered version of this iconic album!

5.1 is mostly spectacular. kinda falls apart a bit toward the end.. Few of the songs sound a bit too altered by the mix but that's just my open yin.

disc 2 is all stereo. Sounds good too, but the 5.1 stuff is the only reason i bought it.

Dualfold paper CD case thing reminds me of triple LP but I never liked these crusty plastic sleeves they come in... tend to end up disintegrating.. & you never know when the inner plastic disc tray center flower spring button thing is gonna shatter. That whole design was cursed from the start... At least the paper has some give. You'll crush a corner before the whole thing splinters tobits.

Multichannel is less.accessible so its understandable there's so little but its so good I'm amazed there's STILL so little spatial music out there after ALL THESE YEARS like since quad phonica... And Pickens still Slim..

hybrid SACD is my favorite multichan el format tho because I can still play them on the regular CD player in my car. Tidal is expensive.

As the title of this review said, this album started my love of music. Nine Inch Nails is the reason why I'm into the bands I'm into today and I thank Mr. Reznor for getting me through dark times, even if the concept involves characters instead of himself (and even then, he still includes personal lyrics about himself. This was prominent in The Fragile).

I'll be covering the stereo version of the album since I don't own an surround sound system or SACD player.

Anyways, let's get this started

The Backstory:
The Downward Spiral soon began recording after Broken was released, originally slated for a December 1993 release. But Trent being the perfectionist he is, pushed it to a '94 release.

The LP was recorded in the infamous house of Sharon Tate, TR didn't know this until later and felt regret.

Flood and Chris Vrenna were both helping hands in the making of the album, but it was mostly done by Trent himself.

NIN then released the overplayed but still kickass song Closer and as a teaser before the LP was released, March of The Pigs.

Now this album has become the band's biggest selling album for whatever weird reason and it remains an timeless classic released over 23 years ago.

Packaging:
The 2008 Deluxe Edition remaster includes re-taken photos of the original art pieces done by Russel Mills thanks to Rob Sheridan, and a tri-fold digipack, and an slip-on case.

Contents:
All of the art for this particular album is included in this set, and includes an completely revamped and nicely done booklet full of more art and lyrics, the art being close ups of the original art pieces.

My only problems being an typo in the lyrics of Piggy with an random question mark being in the middle of the text, and no lyrics for the B-Sides except for "Burn". Just personal nitpicks though.

It's also a nice two disc set with the original album remastered and a couple of B-Sides from the TDS era.

Sound Quality:
The treble and bass sounds amazing and more cleaner here, but overall, the sound remains true to the original release.

People might complain that it's too loud, but it's because of there being more clarity then on the original release.

Final Thoughts:
To me, this is the definitve version of TDS on CD and I recommend you pick this baby up ASAP.
