About us

Founded upon owner Brian Slagel’s enduring drive to find great bands and get their music out to as many people as possible, since 1982 Metal Blade has brought wave after wave of powerful, innovative, and often genre-defining music to the ever-hungry metal masses. It is this ethos that has seen Metal Blade build up a stunning and diverse catalogue, weather the various storms facing any independent label, and in an age of declining record sales boast the most successful years of its existence as it strides into its fourth decade.

Editorial Reviews

Where Owls Know My Name by Rivers of Nihil Forget everything you think you know about Rivers of Nihil. The Reading, PA quintet announced themselves as one of the most promising and forward-thinking metal bands in the world today with their first two releases, The Conscious Seed of Light (2013) and Monarchy (2015). But in 2018, they will shatter all expectations with their third full-length, Where Owls Know My Name.

The much-hyped new Rivers of Nihil has been released and after spending some time with it, here's the heart of the matter. It's pretty darn awesome. I've gone back and listened to their prior two albums and the biggest thing I take away from the new as compared to the old is that Rivers have stepped up their songwriting game considerably. After a spin or two, the songs on Where Owls Know My Name just stay with you, while the prior two albums start to lose your attention after a while. I like that they have scaled back some of the look-at-me technicality in favor of good songcraft a LOT. The progressive nature of these songs isn't immediately apparent because of how all of the parts easily flow together and come back to solid hooks, but progressive it is, drawing some Pink Floyd and King Crimson influence into their extended-range modern metal approach.

All of the elements that people like about Rivers of Nihil are still there, too, but, for example when Rivers turns the crush on or has a sweet guitar solo, it has even more impact than before. The "outside" elements of saxophone solos, keyboards, clean singing are not shocking or out of place in their music, either, giving this music good repeat listening value.

The only beefs I see online are "production values" and "riffs." If I had any beef at all it would be the production/mix/master. It's not BAD, it's more or less your standard modern metal mix and master, squished quite a bit, loud but not exceptionally so. It works, but the case could and should be made that if they dialed back the mix and master and allowed the music to breathe just a little bit more the album would have even more impact than it does. But again, it isn't BAD and for a modern mix/master it has not given me any headaches or ear fatigue and you can hear most of what's going on. As for the "riffs," some detractors out there are saying that there isn't a lot going on with guitar riffs but I disagree. The riffs are FINE and as I hear it are the end result of a band holding themselves back in order to provide the listener with better, more far reaching SONGS. And they succeeded! Thank you Rivers of Nihil!

After seeing "Where Owls Know My Name" showing up on year end "best of" lists all over the metal internet I was sufficiently curious to check Rivers Of Nihil out on youtube and after just a few minutes discovered this was a band that resolutely refuses to play by anybody's rules.
One cannot truly pin this amazing band down to one single genre, and that's a great thing because extreme music has needed some serious fresh input for some time. The band opens up with a lush keyboard intro, then slams into a black metal frenzy before mixing death blast beats and guitars and even some thrash, and to make the ball curve even more, as we go farther into this potent mix, very melodious saxophone, keyboards and some clean vocals all chime in, showing a band that is not just heavy, but are massively skilled musicians at that.
Think perhaps late Ihsahn's musical marriage of black metal and progressive styles, throw in some truly jazzy interludes, reflective acoustic/keyboard moments, and maybe a tad bit of Opeth, and you might be getting somewhere, although these guys are clearly in a musical universe nobody besides themselves has discovered yet, or are afraid of bucking cliched trends and demands of most extreme music out there.
"Where Owls Know My Name" is a very captivating, sometimes ethereal, sometimes very brutal but very very catchy album when one considers the complexity involved. German band The Ocean only wish they could be this dynamic and shape shifting. Best of all, most of the segments are strong enough to serve as foundations for individual songs of their own. No dull moments here, just amazing music from start to finish. Even those not normally fans of more extreme or heavy music should give Rivers Of Nihil a listen. It truly is one of the most exciting albums I've bought in a long time and it will be a very short amount of time before I get their first two albums, although given the strength of this album, it will be hard to top.

This is the first CD/Album I have ever heard from the band Rivers Of Nihil. The CD /Album starts off in a pretty cool way, and then continues to get better, then by the time you get to the title track 'Where Owls Know My Name' you know you are listening to something very cool! Reminds me a little of SCULPTERED 'The Spear of the Lily is Aureoled' Experimental i.e. saxophone. Nice!

Lovely purple variant of the album! Excellent sound, well mixed and mastered and I listen to it pretty often. Very clear sound and the brilliant quality of the production can easily be noticed. The reason why i highly recommend it on vinyl is for The gatefold, it has lyrics on them and the story told through the tracks is amazing. The art is spectacular to look at as well while listening to the album.

Every song has incredible technical proficiency. I like the more "proggy" songs over the extreme-tech-death type songs. I'd anticipate that long-time fans probably dislike the parts that I find most interesting.

I feel the drummer tends to overplay on most of the album (not dissing his amazing technical chops though). When the drummer decides to let some of the songs breathe and provides more of a groove I think that's when everything feels really cohesive.

I hope the band continues down this direction on whatever they write next. Anyway, highly recommend and I hope to see them live if they ever tour through Denver.

One would be forgiven for thinking that saxophones have no place in death metal, but Rivers of Nihil will prove you wrong. The sax flows seamlessly into the musical river the band creates and enhances the mood rather than detracts from it. These guys put aside any doubts they may have had and went on to make one of the best (if not THE best) metal albums of 2018. Recommended!

This is one of my absolute favorite albums at the moment. There's so much influence these guys took from other metal bands and even pink floyd. It all comes together perfectly for the seasonal story they are trying to tell. Really good stuff here. And the sax is amazing!

Actually Not at all. I have ordered it twice now. The first time I received the Logan movie soundtrack. And the second time was the pet shop boys. Highly unprofessional. Not once but twice. Most likely will quit ordering from you. This is actually the 3rd time overall I received the wrong item.
