Editorial Reviews
Saxon, over the decades have gone from being pioneers of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, to becoming one of the most successful UK rock acts of all time. The truth, though, is that Saxon have always transcended trends and eras. From 1979's 'Saxon' album to new album ‘Thunderbolt’, the band have enjoyed considerable success. Five Top 40 albums in the UK, with four Top 20 singles. And they were similarly successful in other parts of the world as well. It's no wonder their influence spread across the globe, and played a crucial role in the way we look at hard rock and heavy metal today. Saxon’s second album, Wheels Of Steel was originally released in 1980 and propelled the band to stardom, going gold in the UK and spawning two top 40 singles – ‘747 (Strangers In The Night) and Wheels Of Steel’, which have remained live favourites to this day. Wheels Of Steel is hailed as a heavy metal classic and a genre defining moment. This version includes some rare demos and live tracks from the inaugural Monsters Of Rock festival, held at Castle Donington in 1980.

With the exception of Iron Maiden, none of those groups however, not even Def Leppard, would chart that year as high as these working class boys from Barnsley. With the strength of singles from the record such as "747 (Strangers in the Night)" and the title track, "Wheels of Steel" actually at one time reached #5 in the U.K. national charts. Astonishing, especially for an independent, underground recording from a previously little known heavy metal band. (Can you imagine that happening in the U.S.?)
Listening to this CD you can hear why. This was then and now the ideal music for speeding down the freeway with this particular album blaring loud (probably on an eight track at the time). The aforementioned title track is particularly earthshaking, taking the deceptively simple but highly catchy riff patterns of bands like AC/DC before them and merging them with the reverb of early Motorhead. Side 2 of the original vinyl opens with the track that best embodies this spirit, "Freeway Mad." The record's second half actually proves to be speed metal city for the most part, on standout scorchers like "See the Light Shining" and "Machine Gun." Sure, Motorhead and Judas Priest before them had at times been fast, but Saxon were FAST. You just did not find tempos this rapid in music in 1980 without crossing over into hardcore punk, making Saxon one of speed metal's true pioneers.
These 2009 remasters are infinitely superior to any previous pressings of their early albums, both in sound quality and packaging. They boast a much fuller and more roomy sound than older editions, more like listening to the original LP, but without the expected crackles and pops of 30-year-old vinyl records. To add to that there are great and informative liner notes with input from frontman Biff Byford himself. The icing on the cake is that each CD contains a reproduction of the original LP's back cover, making them essential for collectors.
Saxon would just keep getting better and better and followed up "Wheels of Steel" with two even better LPs (one later the same year!). "Wheels of Steel" though remains a defining moment in the band's career and brings you right back to the excitement of the early NWOBHM scene. Highly recommended.
Though Iron Maiden and Def Leppard have become the best known of the NWOBHM bands, Saxon has probably remained truest to themselves throughout their long history (with the exception of a couple of late 80's forays into radio friendly rock).
"Wheels of Steel" is arguably the strongest of their classic early albums from start to finish. There's not a weak track in the bunch and the performances by all members are quite good. Singer Biff Byford (probably my favorite name in heavy metal) shines especially brightly in the strength of his delivery.
The songs display many typical rock 'n' roll themes but are by no means dull or cliche'. While "747 Strangers in the NIght" and the title track are considered by most fans as this album's true classic songs, all the titles are equal in their power and honesty. Saxon displays a welcome heartfelt love of their genre throughout their history but perhaps more so on this album than on others in their discography.
"Motorcycle Man" makes you want to climb on a Harley even if you don't own one while "Freeway Mad" and "See the Light Shining" are hidden gems.
The packaging on this edition is nice with a book-style layout, lyrics and period pictures. A write up would have been a nice addition, but the overall presentation is still pleasing (I purchased the cd version).
I recommend this slab of 80's metal to any fan of the genre.
More about the product:
The original songs are remastered and song flawless. The bonus live tracks are a very welcome addition. I love the physical album because more often than not when you buy remastered albums, the packaging is cheap but this is a very durable hard cover booklet with various images of Saxon (see images for some photos), all the lyrics, and a slot for the CD at the end.

Saxon mastered the art of combining fast songs with catchy riffs and rhythms. The production is of course a 1980s thing, but it still has enough clarity to bring down the house.
This album immortalised the entire NWOBHM movement along with Priests British Steel & Iron Maiden's debut, by the way, all those albums came out in 1980.
The last track on the original release "Machine Gun" was totally ripped off by Metallica on Kill 'Em All, and simply played fast and called Whiplash, just listen to it and I'm sure you'll agree.
It also should be stated that at this time Saxon were along with Motörhead the fastest band around especially with this release
The bonus tracks are also great and totally enjoyable on this Remastered re-release.
