Editorial Reviews

Creative firebrand Manuel Gagneux returns with a brand new Zeal & Ardor album ‘Stranger Fruit’ Mixing blues, gospel, and soul with harsher music has opened up a world of possibilities for Gagneux. Previously creating as a one man solo effort, the immense interest and critical acclaim Zeal & Ardor attracted upon release of debut album Devil Is Fine, has led to the project becoming a fully-fledged, internationally-touring band. After months hidden away, crafting the new songs for Stranger Fruit, Gagneux entered the studio with producer Zebo Adam and mixer Kurt Ballou (Converge, Kvelertak, Nails). While the finished sound is larger and heavier, it is still unmistakably Zeal & Ardor. The diverse yet cohesive nature of the sixteen tracks on Stranger Fruit is designed to encourage the listener to dig a little deeper and find their own meaning in its words. In contrast to first LP Devil Is Fine, these songs are deliberately intended to play off each other both lyrically and musically. While the record seethes with a justifiable rage, its wider-reaching aim is to unify, not divide, and to inspire action, not inertia. Elements of a bleak melancholy are tempered by hope. Superficially, the album tells small isolated stories, but there are also references to the Goetia, Yoruba, and obscure occult literature and history within.

More of What Made "Devil is Fine" So Good
This is an amazing album. All of the aspects that made "Devil is Fine" so good are expanded upon in this album. It's heavier, it's got more occult themes, and it is a great time. The vinyl is pretty cool too. FYI it plays at 45 RPM.

Fantastic album. Something different in this modern age of wash-rinse-repeat music. I also think it's a good step up from the first album, which felt like someone trying to get to grips with the idea of combining these styles. Don't get me wrong - 'Devil is Fine' is still great (especially that title track), it's just that this feels like a more complete ride from start to finish. The limited double purple vinyl is fantastic. The slabs were nice and flat, the gatefold packaging is gorgeous, and the audio profile is fantastic. It's also nice to have the music broken up into 4 pieces like this, so you get a bit of a break here and there - since listening to the whole album in one go can be quite exhausting sometimes. And you want to be alert when you get to the final track, because it's a fantastic closer. Anyway - super immersive album, and a wonderful change from the norm - highly recommended

One of the best albums of 2018. It comes in a very beautiful triple gatefold with the vinyl being a very pretty shade of purple to match the color of the album. I recommend giving this album and artist a listen. This is a must have for any vinyl collector/music connoisseur’s collection.

This record is one of the best things I've heard in a long time. Blending blues, spirituals, with black metal may sound like an absurd idea, but it all comes together to create something very unique and worthy of many spins.

Zeal & Ardor here does an even more impressive job of blending spirituals and black metal with a lot less filler than the first album. The vision and focus is much stronger on this one; and it's an incredibly moving album.

I found a pleasing mix of sing alongs and head bangers on this album. Would recommend.

The album is amazing, I highly recommend buying this album. The low rating is for the condition of the tape when I received it. The listing did not say anything about being used but when I got the tape it was obviously used, the case was cracked and had some wear. fortunately the tape works fine and the album is amazing. I would absolutely recommend this album just make sure it is new if you want a new copy.

Was Zeal & Ardor, bzw.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it. Auto rip available too!

Amazing album. I purchased after seeing them live in London. Didn't have enough money for a t-shirt and their album at the event so opted for the shirt. I was surprised that Amazon also offer auto rip on some albums. Bought the CD and got a download for free!

The album is an amazing blend of guitars shredding, screaming and everything else you would expect from a heavy metal album but with a twist. The vocals are sultry and beautiful, there are chants and riffs reminiscent of black slave ancestors, there's blues influence and the lyrics reflecting a dark history (maybe also more relevant today than we would like to believe).

I'm so proud of these guys. I hope there are many more albums to come from them. Oh, and if you haven't seen them live yet make sure you do, you'll be in for a real treat!
