Description:
On January 25, 2019, Walter Trout will release his new album "Survivor Blues" on the Provogue label. Walter Trout is no ordinary artist. Survivor Blues is no ordinary covers album. From the day he conceived the project to the moment he counted off the first song in the studio, Walter Trout had a bolder plan for Survivor Blues. "I'm riding in my car sometimes," says the US blues titan. "I've got a blues station on – and here's another band doing Got My Mojo Workin'. And there's a little voice in me that says, 'Does the world need another version of that song?' So I came up with an idea. I didn't want to do Stormy Monday or Messin' With The Kid. I didn't want to do the blues greatest hits. I wanted to do old, obscure songs that have hardly been covered. And that's how Survivor Blues started..."

In this 2019 release, Walter Trout and company revisit twelve songs originally done by other artists, songs that he calls survivors. (Trout routinely writes his own material.) This includes familiar names such as BB King and John Mayall, as well as others by lesser known but still highly acknowledged acts such as Mississippi Fred McDowell (on whose song, “Goin’ Down to the River”, Trout is joined by Robby Krieger).
As we have come to expect from Trout, his mastery of the blues guitar is second to none and his backing players are equally embedded in the trials and joys of the blues. Most of the songs are ones that have slipped by most modern bluesmen but is wonderfully revived by Walter as if they had just come out today.
But then again, blues has always been magical and special.
It’s impossible to pull one song out and say ‘this is great’ or ‘better than this other one’, because that are all done with tremendous fire and energy (even the softer blues umber like “Sadie” originally done by Hound Dog Taylor.).
Special mention must be given to his band; drummer Michael Leasure. Bassist Johnny Griparic and keyboard maestro Skip Edwards. This quartet really know the blues like nobody’s business.

To me, the best blues/Rock guitarist ever!
And apiary from being an excellent musician, he is also a kind artist that I had the privilege to meet & work with in the late 80’s & early 90’s.
From
The very first time I knew I was watching a legend in the making.
I was right! He is a living legend.
Buy it! You won’t regret it!
If you read this Walter, how about reliving the Chicago Blues Jam with the members of Fleetwood Mac and highlighting Otis Spann
