Editorial Reviews

The Black Keys’ninth studio album,“Let’s Rock,”will be released June 28, 2019 via Easy Eye Sound/Nonesuch Records. The long-awaited album, their first in five years, is a return to the straightforward rock of thesinger/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney’searly days as a band. Auerbach says, “When we’re together we are The Black Keys, that’s where that real magic is, and always has been since we were sixteen.” The Black Keys’ thirty-one city North American tour begins September 23. “Let’s Rock”was written, tracked live, and produced by Auerbach and Carney at Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville and features backingvocals from Leisa Hans and Ashley Wilcoxson. “The record is like a homage to electric guitar,” says Carney. “We took a simple approach and trimmed all the fat like we used to.”

Every track is easily repeatable.
5 Stars
Every track is easily repeatable.
This album is easily my favorite of 2019 SO FAR. The tracklist is filled with easily repeatable toe-tapping songs that are fun to rock out to. There really isn't a dud on here. Now let's talk vinyl pressing quality. It is incredible. Minimum to almost no surface noise, well-done song transitions that are seamless, and audio quality to kill for.Listening to this album with a quality set of cans is like listening to someone constantly tell you that money was well spent.

Great album

I'd say this is my favorite album by the Black Keys so far, but on second thought, I've had that same feeling each time I've gotten a new one by these guys. I got this as a gift, along with "Magic Potion", and the two albums come close to acting as bookends of their musical journey so far. Their sound has definitely changed over time, but even so, songs like "Your Touch" from all the way back at "Magic Potion" sound like they could just as easily made their debut on THIS album. This stuff is possibly the best work music on earth for a manufacturing or construction workplace.

I already owned "Brothers" and "El Camino", and let me sum up by saying that "Let's Rock" persuaded me to put every other album by the band I could find into my wishlist immediately.

All I can say is wow! I've listened to this album countless times since the day it released. After a six year hiatus, the Black Keys came back in terrific form with Let's Rock, which is a very honest title. This is sort of a "return to form" for them, a much more straightforward rock 'n roll album than any of the Brian Burton-produced albums. It is not so outwardly bluesy like their earliest releases, but this is definitely a rock record. It relies very much on overdriven guitars and riffs. However, there are some more mellow songs on the record to balance it out as well. But I hear a very strong influence from various 1970s rock styles on this album. And I love it!

If any of the Black Keys' recent albums turned you off because of the sound changes, I highly recommend giving Let's Rock a chance. This is the band in their rawest form and at their best. They don't sound like they've aged a day.

It is not their best work, but it is good work. They've been out of the game for a while and they're stretching their muscles. That's how I'd sum it up.
The album is overall a sort of mix of high-energy and low-energy and sometimes works and sometimes almost works.

----Let's get this out of the way: The composition is basic. The Black Keys make basic music. Their strength as a band comes in making music that is catchy and fun enough to be enjoyable. To judge the Black Keys' lack of complex guitar solos or complex drumming is like judging a scoop of vanilla ice cream as plain. It's silly. A good scoop of vanilla ice cream is always delicious.-----

The album starts with a real burst of energy and instead of alternating it sort of slows down to a crawl in the middle section with low-energy acoustic melancholy and "laid-back" tracks. It picks back up at the end but at that point only a couple tracks are really left. It ends with a track that I find extremely enjoyable but doesn't quite feel right as a closer as it doesn't have a big bang. It lacks the umph.

I think the band's previous albums found strength in alternating between "fast" and "slow" songs, so it was always a nice ride and never got stale. With "Let's Rock" I found that there was too much a bulk of slow and soft tracks that separated the real great tracks on the album. Let's Rock decides to go somewhat acoustic and soft and mellow for much of its music and it ultimately hurts the overall work by a small degree.

All said it's important to note that, as always, don't expect any new Keys album to undo their ever-changing sound. Every new album since Attack and Release has sounded entirely different and this time is no different. It is not an extension of "the old stuff" or any recent album, though if you have to compare it to their old work I would say that "Let's Rock" sounds like El Camino mixed with 'the old stuff' and some Turn Blue and ever so slightly a bit of Brothers. So in a way, it does encompass the sound of their career.

This album is a masterpiece. The Black Keys did what they do best, which is take an older style of music and make it new. The backup singers are amazing and thier contribution could not be overstated. Every track rocks my socks off. The album was well named, and it is a perfect evolution from blues to rock, reminding me of a combination of 60s, 70s, and 80s sounds all fused together in a fresh and refreshing way. If you want something to rock out to while commuting, doing projects in the garage, or trying to get through the mundane every day chores, this is a great album to do it with. I will hit the gym with it on my earphones as well. I highly recommend and can't wait to get my hands on their next album.

Great Black Keys album
Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2019
It has been a long time since the last release by the Black Keys. I was wondering what to expect as I first listened to this CD. On first listen I found it both interesting and puzzling- for a title of Let's Rock, there seemed to be a number of hauntingly introspective tunes. There were Beatlesesque components and some 90's influences. The more I listen to it though the more I have come to appreciate and really enjoy it. There is a maturity evident as well as the rawness at times early Key's fans cherished. Solid songwriting and lyrics delivered with emotion and authenticity augment the effort. I keep going back to it and enjoy it more every time I listen to it.

Yes, for years I got The Black Keys and The Black Eyed Peas confused (who does that?). Never checked out The Black Keys before this album was advertised, and I'm glad I did. This is a straight up solid rock record - stylistically ranging from driving, anthemic rockers (Lo/Hi, Shine a Little Light) to a laid back, swinging sound reminiscent of CCR (Get Yourself Together, Sit Around and Miss You). Not many albums nowadays that I can stand to listen to front to back, but this is one of them. Innovative but not experimental or grandiose.
