Editorial Reviews
The Black Keys’ninth studio album,“Let’s Rock,”will be released June 28, 2019 via Easy Eye Sound/Nonesuch Records. The long-awaited album, their first in five years, is a return to the straightforward rock of thesinger/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney’searly days as a band. Auerbach says, “When we’re together we are The Black Keys, that’s where that real magic is, and always has been since we were sixteen.” The Black Keys’ thirty-one city North American tour begins September 23. “Let’s Rock”was written, tracked live, and produced by Auerbach and Carney at Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville and features backingvocals from Leisa Hans and Ashley Wilcoxson. “The record is like a homage to electric guitar,” says Carney. “We took a simple approach and trimmed all the fat like we used to.”

I already owned "Brothers" and "El Camino", and let me sum up by saying that "Let's Rock" persuaded me to put every other album by the band I could find into my wishlist immediately.
If any of the Black Keys' recent albums turned you off because of the sound changes, I highly recommend giving Let's Rock a chance. This is the band in their rawest form and at their best. They don't sound like they've aged a day.
The album is overall a sort of mix of high-energy and low-energy and sometimes works and sometimes almost works.
----Let's get this out of the way: The composition is basic. The Black Keys make basic music. Their strength as a band comes in making music that is catchy and fun enough to be enjoyable. To judge the Black Keys' lack of complex guitar solos or complex drumming is like judging a scoop of vanilla ice cream as plain. It's silly. A good scoop of vanilla ice cream is always delicious.-----
The album starts with a real burst of energy and instead of alternating it sort of slows down to a crawl in the middle section with low-energy acoustic melancholy and "laid-back" tracks. It picks back up at the end but at that point only a couple tracks are really left. It ends with a track that I find extremely enjoyable but doesn't quite feel right as a closer as it doesn't have a big bang. It lacks the umph.
I think the band's previous albums found strength in alternating between "fast" and "slow" songs, so it was always a nice ride and never got stale. With "Let's Rock" I found that there was too much a bulk of slow and soft tracks that separated the real great tracks on the album. Let's Rock decides to go somewhat acoustic and soft and mellow for much of its music and it ultimately hurts the overall work by a small degree.
All said it's important to note that, as always, don't expect any new Keys album to undo their ever-changing sound. Every new album since Attack and Release has sounded entirely different and this time is no different. It is not an extension of "the old stuff" or any recent album, though if you have to compare it to their old work I would say that "Let's Rock" sounds like El Camino mixed with 'the old stuff' and some Turn Blue and ever so slightly a bit of Brothers. So in a way, it does encompass the sound of their career.
