Editorial Reviews
LIGHTNING TO THE NATIONS 2020: HEAVY METAL RE-BORN AND RE-ENERGISED AS DIAMOND HEAD RELEASE 40th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF DEBUT ALBUM Re-imagined, re-recorded and re-born, Diamond Head’s forthcoming 40-year celebration of their genre-defining debut album Lightning To The Nations is a scintillating shot of fresh metal energy. Taking the material which spawned the ground-breaking New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), Diamond Head utilise all their skill, experience and revitalised energy to breathe so much new life into these freshly recorded takes that it feels like experiencing the earth shaking all over again. The levels of fresh energy in these celebration sessions will blow doors and socks off all who hear them, and the potency of timeless riffage such as “It’s Electric” and “The Prince” literally scream at the listener. Founder member, lead guitarist/songsmith Brian Tatler and rhythm guitarist Andy Abberley give the guitars a new razor edge, Karl Wilcox on drums and Dean Ashton on bass are a buoyant bombastic platform, while vocalist Rasmus Bom Andersen brings a brilliant new take on the vocals. Anderson also produced and mixed the album with a freshness and attack which will thrill fans old and new. As if that wasn’t enough, Diamond Head add four covers to the album, Judas Priest’s “Sinner”, Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”, Deep Purple’s “Rat Bat Blue” and a stunning take of Metallica’s “No Remorse”, which is a tribute’s tribute to the band who openly formed under enormous influence from Diamond Head, and covered several of the songs on Lightning To The Nations, decades ago. Diamond Head’s debut was a classic once already; it is about to be a stone cold classic once more.

I know what you're thinking, I groaned internally too when I heard that they have re-recorded this classic. But let me just say, I am VERY impressed with what the band churned out here. Not only have they given the songs a strong new sound but it oozes with the energy and passion that the currently line up have put into their recent albums, Diamond Head and Coffin Train.
It's no doubt going to be seen as a controversial opinion but this is a huge upgrade from the thin cheap production of the original LP. As soon as the album starts, it'll hit you immediately with this huge thick guitar. Tatler is not screwing around. He sounds heavier and meaner than he ever has. He performs some fantastic solos. Between Brian and guitarist Andrew Abberley, the two give those old played out riffs the kick up the butt they deserve. The bass playing from Dean Ashton sounds great in the mix between the twin guitars. The drums are quite up front in the mix and have quite an impact. I like the use of double bass drumming sprinkled through out. It's not over used like other bands but just enough to give certain passages a boost. The vocals from Rasmus Bom Anderson are some of the finest the band have had in general. But here he is more consistent and more powerful than the original by Sean Harris. I love the extra melodies he gives us and the James Hetfield style grunt. It's the little things that count.
The production and engineering of the album is pretty good for the most part. I would argue that it has been mixed a bit too loud but it isn't anywhere near as bad as other metal albums released this year. The songs have all been slowed down just a little bit and I'm curious to know who made that decision. The song Am I Evil? for example sounds more in line with the rendition on the bands Borrowed Time album and not the original Lightning To The Nations. It's an interesting choice and no doubt some meat head types will find this offensive but I find it gives the music more room to breathe and makes the riffs feel heavier, which is what this album definitely is.
In a weird bit of irony, I think Diamond Head have finally made a cover of Am I Evil? that tops Metallica in terms of heaviness and impact. They took what they've done with this song over the years and rubbed it all over the entire album. The results are a fantastic re-recording of one of heavy metal's most under appreciated bands. This line up of the group is on fire, between this and their previous two albums. I hope we see more from the band soon. If you're a Diamond Head fan, a NWOBHM fan, a Metallica fan and so on, this well worth picking up.
