Editorial Reviews
Transatlantic - the prog supergroup of Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy, Roine Stolt and Pete Trewavas - deliver their fifth studio album, The Absolute Universe. Representing the band's first new music since 2014's Kaleidoscope, with The Absolute Universe the band have done something unique and created two versions of the record: The Absolute Universe: The Breath Of Life (Abridged Version) and The Absolute Universe: Forevermore (Extended Version).

You just cannot sit on your rear pockets and watch the screen till it ends. It's a background kinda thing.
You know, like at a social gathering instead of a band or a Disc-Jockey. I suppose it depends upon your social status.
I enjoyed it, but got restless after watching it for 25 minutes. Know what I mean, Vern?
“The Absolute Universe,” as I said, exists in two CD formats: the 2-CD set (“Forevermore”) and the 1-CD set (“The Breath of Life.”) There is also a third version on Blu-ray in the Ultimate Edition box, but I don’t have that and can’t comment on it. “The Breath of Life” might be an “abridged” version of “Forevermore,” but it really is a different album. There is music on “The Breath of Life” that is NOT on “Forevermore,” and vice versa!
That’s a rather pretentious way to put out a new album (but, hey, it’s progressive rock, and “pretentious” is a feature, not a negative! 😊 ) I must say, though, it’s a bit of a money-grab for the band to put out two different versions of the same album because their fans will likely buy both. That said, the two versions do offer different listening experiences, so there’s that.
After digesting both for a few days, I can easily say that “Forevermore” is the better of the two versions. Yes, it’s longer, but I feel that all the music flows together in a much more coherent way. It’s logical. It makes sense. “The Breath of Life” feels like a greatest hits compilation and some of the transitions, when compared to those in “Forevermore,” feel more jarring. “Forevermore” begins with the Overture (roughly three minutes longer than the one on “TBOL”) and segues smoothly into “Heart Like a Whirlwind,” a song that does NOT appear on “TBOL”. Conversely, the Overture on “TBOL” segues into a song called “Reaching for the Sky,” which is NOT on “Forevermore”! There are other instances of something on one edition that’s not on the other. Lyrics differ in some places, too, as well as lead vocalists on certain songs! What??
Overall, though, the theme of the album, the all-encompassing absolute universe of this work by TransAtlantic, is epic, existential, and full of “concept.” “Forevermore” works. I’m not sure “The Breath of Life” does. The music “TBOF” contains that’s not on “Forevermore” is indeed fine, so I’m not sure why the band chose to split some of it up. "TBOF" also seems to be a bit more preachy with religious imagery and subtext, and that is not as blatant on “Forevermore.”
I’m going to give “The Breath of Life” 3 stars because it’s a good-enough listen and contains a couple of songs you can’t find on the other edition. On the other hand, “Forevermore” gets 4 stars from me as I can predict that this will be the edition I’ll be returning to more often. It simply works better as a complete album (and I also like that each disk is only a little over 40 minutes, which to me is a good listening duration before a break!). “Forevermore” doesn’t get 5 stars simply because, well, there’s music from the other version that isn’t on it, and I had to buy both versions to get it all.
Everything is expanded upon and there is must more interesting parts going on in this
2 disc version, instead of the condensed "Neal Morse solo album" 1 disc version.
Honestly, you can't go wrong getting this version if you are only going to buy one.
Happy listening !!

So in a bit of a marketing ploy, they released this edited/abridged version with 3 new tracks that aren't on the 2 CD edition. In addition, the music and lyrics were altered for some. in addition to different vocalists.
What they'll do for touring [whenever available!] should make things interesting.
As usual, excellent musicianship.
