Editorial Reviews
2021 release. Mammoth WVH is the debut, self-titled album by the band created by Wolfgang Van Halen. This collection includes "Distance" plus "Don't Back Down," "Epiphany," "Mammoth" and more. At the beginning of 2015, Wolf broke ground on what would become Mammoth Wvh with producer Michael "Elvis" Baskette [Alter Bridge, Slash] behind the board. Wolf began to embrace his voice, inspired by everyone from his father, to bands like AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails, TOOL, and Jimmy Eat World. In addition to writing and singing every song on the self-title debut album, remarkably Wolfgang plays every instrument. "The name Mammoth is really special to me." says Wolf. "Not only was it the name of Van Halen before it became Van Halen, but my father was also the lead singer. Ever since my dad told me this, I always thought that when I grew up, I'd call my own band Mammoth, because I loved the name so much."

1.Mr. Ed (9.5/10) - straight forward chugging, almost overlapping riff with an almost “sunny” sounding chorus. Let’s not forget the finger tapping solo. It’s not balls to the wall but a great opener none the less.
2.Horribly Right (9/10) - grungy riff with an almost Nickleback vocal delivery. Don’t let that scare you away, it’s a quality song with a fair amount of harmonics and driving drum beat.
3. Epiphany (9.5/10) - I really dig the drums on the song as they set the tone. The guitar is mostly simple with an ominous tone. It’s a darker sounding song with a borderline sing along chorus. The bridge, at around 2:46, let’s Wolfgang show off a little more emotion in his vocals.
4. Don’t Back Down (10/10) - This song is the closest to the swagger that was Van Halen. The riff is similar to “Burn it Down” by Nickleback. Again, hate the comparison but it isn’t a bad thing.
5. Resolve (9/10) - Things slow down a bit here with the acoustic guitar. Wolfie shows a bit more range in this song through his vocals. The bluesy guitar solo is a very nice touch.
6. You’ll Be The One (9/10) - The drums remind me of Def Leopards “Photograph” but the vocals and guitar give me a Foo Fighters vibe. The breakdown sounds like Sevendust, I’m sure Wolfgang has his influences so I’m not sure if they’re shining through on here or not. Fair guitar solo
7. Mammoth (9.25/10) - The lyrics step away from the darker side of things and sound far more positive here. Supposedly the Frankenstrat was used on this song for the solo.
8. Circles (9.25/10) - Gloomy song that gives off a slight Alice In Chains vibe. I enjoy the change of pace and has now become one of my favorite songs on the album. The vocal breakdown is very well sung and emotional. No solo, more of an anti-solo 3-4 chord repeat. Slightly repetitive strumming like the end of Seether’s “Fine Again”.
9. The Big Picture (8.75/10) - Remember Queens or the Stoneage? Similar sounding guitar tone here. Also a slight STP vibe. Great song but doesn’t standout as much as some of the others too me. I wouldn’t be surprised if this one grows more on me.
10. Think it Over (9.5/10) - He went pop here. Jimmy Eat World and Foo Fighters had a child and it’s this song. Very positive song, sounds like it could be on a commercial of some sort….really Lol
11. You’re to Blame (10/10) - Simple yet gritty riff. This one bleeds late 2000-2010 rock vibe. One of the better solos on the album and well laid out.
12. Feel (10/10) - My favorite off of the album. The drums and guitar give it both a sinister and driving pace. The lead-in to the chorus showcases his vocals and let’s then standout from the music a little as well. The bass playing is more prominent here, it gets to have the show.
13. Stone (10/10) - Second favorite song on the album. I’m not sure how fond of Alice In Chains Wolfie is, but this one has their sludge. It’s got a little Pink Floyd / Psychedelic vibe as well. It really surprised me when the distortion kicked in at 1:23. Monster of a song once you let it grow.
14. Distance (10/10) Perfect ode to his pops. Reminds me of a late 90s early 00s love song. It’s a nice bookend to a great album and quite different than the previous song.
All and all it is amazing to think that this album was created entirely by one man. He really knocked it out of the park and has multiple talents. I can’t wait until the next album already!
