Product Description

Last year marked the 25th anniversary of Extreme’s classic multi-Platinum, Grammy® nominated PORNOGRAFFITTI, the definitive album of the band’s career. To mark the anniversary, Loud & Proud Records releases PORNOGRAFFITTI LIVE 25 / METAL MELTDOWN, a 3-disc set as part of their four-part “Metal Meltdown” DVD series. The concert film captures the the Boston band performing PORNOGRAFFITTI in its entirety. The BluRay/DVD/CD release also features a documentary that takes fans through Extreme's story, archive footage and a photo gallery. The band achieved their greatest success with their 1990 album PORNOGRAFFITTI, which peaked at #10 on the Billboard’s “Top 200 Albums” chart, and was certified multi-Platinum. Musically, PORNOGRAFFITTI is dominated by blistering guitar riffs, often with funky, syncopated timing, and incendiary, high-speed rock/metal solos. The record garnered Bettencourt widespread admiration from rock guitar enthusiasts and provided continued exposure in leading guitar publications. But it was the acoustic ballad single, "More Than Words,” that reached #1 on Billboard's “Hot 100” chart and was nominated for a Grammy® Award for “Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.” The subsequent single, "Hole Hearted,” another acoustic track, was also successful, rising to #4 on the same chart. "Decadence Dance" and "Get the Funk Out" were also released as singles both landing on Billboard's Rock chart and becoming fan favorites.

Okay, enough with the fawning. Here's what you need to know about this release:

Ignore what the Amazon.com listing says about the aspect ratio being 1.33:1 (the pre-widescreen standard TV format also known as 4:3). You can relax, folks. The concert and the documentary are in widescreen (I think it's somewhere at or near 1.78:1). Also, the packaging says the song "Cupid's Dead" is in the concert set list. Well, the band did play it at the show but all we get to see and hear of it is the back half of it underneath the closing credits. It picks up during the bridge and plays pretty much to the end. But it's not the complete song or really even a separate track. It's the end credits sequence with a bit of music. And in the closing credits they misspell "Bumblebee". (The CD contains only the songs from the Pornograffitti album, where as the concert video gives you all that plus a song from their first record.)

The documentary runs about 95 or so minutes long and incorporates over a half hour of the concert footage. So that's a bit redundant, isn't it? You get the full concert on the disc and then half the concert AGAIN in the documentary? Yep. Judging by the format of the structure of the documentary I believe it was prepared as a separate TV or Internet broadcast complete with bumpers for commercial breaks. The non-concert portions are certainly interesting, though. You get to see a lot of pictures (and a little video) of the band's early days, including some band promo shots when the line-up was different. The band members are surprisingly candid about some of the bumpy times in their relationships with each other.

Brian May of Queen, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, producer Michael Waggener, and a few other folks weigh in with their stories of their connection to the band. Even Steven Tyler of Aerosmith takes a turn. But the overwhelming majority of the time is spent with Nuno, Gary, and Pat. Original drummer Paul Geary is interviewed in a few segments too. One-time Extreme drummer Mike Mangini is mentioned a couple of times but doesn't participate beyond that.

This package contains a Blu-ray, a DVD, and a CD. So where do you want to store this in your house? With your Blu-ray collection? On your DVD shelf? With your other CDs? The physical package is proportioned like a tri-fold CD package. It won't blend in with your Blu-ray or DVD boxes, that's for sure. They make DVD and Blu-ray boxes to hold 3 discs, but the CD package version was probably the least expensive option in production, so there you go. Me? I'm putting all the discs in a 3-disc Blu-ray case and shelving it seamlessly with my other Blu-ray movies and concerts. I just have to make an insert for it, which isn't hard.

I've read other reviews here where it was stated that the overall concert sound was not as rich as hoped for. I'm okay with it, but I also live in an apartment and can't blare it at max volume anyway. The band's performance is good even if the sound mix doesn't please everyone. On the plus side you can hear some of the harmony vocals better here than on the record.

I was delighted to finally hear them play the full-length version of "He-Man Woman Hater" instead of the head-fake version they usually play before segueing into "Get The Funk Out". But Gary isn't totally faithful to the original lyrics of the chorus. Not sure if he was being artistically playful or just forgetful.

Overall, it's worth the purchase. Enjoy.

My favorite album from my teenage years, played to perfection by a band that is 100% on top of their game. Which is amazing, considering that they don't really tour that often. I honestly can't believe how great they sound in this production, the vocals and harmonies are spot-on, with barely a flaw to be heard anywhere. Nuno Bettencourt is an all-time great on guitar, some folks get wrapped up in the shredding aspect of his playing, but he is truly the complete package as a player. As a bass player myself, I love Pat Badger, his playing is the perfect complement to Nuno's, and his harmonies are outstanding. KFigg brings a deeper groove to the music than former drummer Paul Geary, and by the way, the drum mix is a big improvement over the last Extreme pro-shot concert. Gary's voice is pitch perfect, I think he may even sound better here than on the original recording. It's great to hear these songs played live also, because the original recording was maybe a little over-produced IMO, even if it does have the perfect hard rock guitar tone. The horns sneak in there in a few spots, but I love being able to pick out everyone's parts a little better, it's just as enjoyable to listen to as it is to watch. I have a few gripes about the Blu-Ray production, there are a few cheesy slow motion shots that don't fit. I don't like the choice to fit little bits of the documentary in between songs, I'd rather it be a more honest recording of what it was like to be in the audience. The audience sucks in this show, I know Extreme doesn't have a following like the big names out there, but seriously, they should have avoided shots where people don't look invested. Shine less lights on the crowd, I don't know what, but the crowd bummed me out- apart from the sporadic people who obviously do appreciate the greatness of this band. The documentary was interesting, I enjoyed the interviews, there were a few corny moments, but overall it's worth watching. I would have loved to hear more masters of the original recordings, but hearing them mess with the mix of GTFO was a real treat. As with the concert film, this time they sprinkle in complete songs in between interviews, which seemed unnecessary. I'd prefer to watch the concert or the documentary, there's no need to double the content. All in all, if you already like Extreme, this is required viewing. If you aren't familiar with the band, and you love a great hard rock performance, you will not be disappointed. If you love "More Than Words" only and you are expecting more of that sort of thing, maybe go watch some youtube performances. This is a rock show!

Amazing Concert Film and Doc package. This is by far the best concert release this Band has ever put out. If you're an Extreme fan or not, this package includes everything you need to see why this is one of the world's best live bands and the musicianship it's outstanding. This package could have been double in price and would still be a huge value. The concert filming and editing is beyond outstanding and the audio mix is incredible. You get the full concert performance and the Bonus Doc is better then any Behind The Music program that includes historic footage, animation, and a trip back to Boston where they revisit key locations, where it all began including the studio where they recorded Pornograffitti and Gary's chilhood home, where they wrote More Than Words and perform again that transitions to the live concert. Just incredible story telling and editing.
This is 10 Stars !
