First, the boring stuff: The box itself is nice and has two book-like inserts, one with band photos and one holding all the disks.
I wanted to put this out there for those who were wondering if they should bother getting this when there is already a Hysteria run-through from the Vegas residency. In short, the answer is an unqualified YES. Vivian is healthier and a total bad-ass, Joe seems to have found a happy place with is older voice, the show as a whole is great, and the sound mix is absolutely shredtastic and better than the Vegas residency.
I thought the first Hysteria run-through in Vegas was a great show, and it was fun seeing the album done start-to-finish. The only complaints I have from that are two small ones: Joe's voice seemed thin, and Vivian not only looked pale and quiet (due to a cancer diagnosis), but is mixed a little down in the soundstage for the Hysteria show (although he was properly in the mix for their opening act part). Given that, though, they are awesome as their own opening band, playing non-Hysteria favorites, and that really does make it worth buying. So, I wasn't sure I really needed this new set, but gave it a try because, I admit it, I'm a Def Leppard junkie. And you know what? Even if you have everything Def Leppard has done so far, this is totally worth it. Some people complain that it's just another bundle of the same Def Leppard stuff, but I beg to differ.
Because...the guitars are EVERYWHERE. Anyone who thinks Def Leppard went a little too pop with Hysteria hasn't seen them do this live. Joe sounds great for his age this time around (better than the Vegas residency). But make no mistake, Vivian Campbell and Phil Collin just EXPLODE here. The Hysteria studio album may have 17 guitar tracks per song, but these guys absolutely shred with just the two of them doing it live. They compress all that highly produced studio virtuosity into a twin guitar attack that hits all the right spots to invoke the album, but slams and shreds and jams way beyond the studio. Just watch Vivian doing the 2nd solo in "Women," and that's only the first song. How can I not be bored by Hysteria now, 30 years later? The answer is - this concert.
The camera work is good. I hate hate hate ultra-quick camera cuts that never let you drink in what you're seeing.
This show does have very short camera cuts, but somehow they are more or less always where you want them to be. So, I did notice a very Attention Deficit Disorder approach to camera edits, but really enjoyed it because someone actually understood where those camera cuts should go in a rock concert.
As you should expect from Def Leppard, the backing vocals are spot-on and sound better than you think they would live without the benefit of studio overdubs. It's just another thing that proves how damned real these guys are.
I almost hesitated buying this because I felt it wasn't really needed to have another live release after Viva Hysteria and Live In Detroit but this release blows those away.
My only complaint would probably be that the bonus features are just too short. They're great features and I love seeing that type of footage...but only 10-15 minutes wasn't long enough. And the book included with the deluxe edition seems kinda pointless.....a few good pictures but would've liked some print stories of some sort. I'm not knocking any stars off my review for these things though because it's about the music and this is a super package that's well worth checking out for fans of the band.
