To fans and critics alike, the years 1973 to 1980 – the Bon Scott era – are the most significant of AC/DC's five-decade career. In a prolific and frequently brilliant run, they recorded six studio albums, established a diehard fanbase that stretched from Australia to the UK, Europe to North America, toured relentlessly, and created no small amount of controversy and chaos.

At one low point in Australia, the band's records were banned, their shows were cancelled, and they were hounded by police – all because Angus Young dared bare his spotty backside at a press conference. In the midst of the mayhem, however, they were building a body of work that remains unmatched in hard rock. Many of AC/DC's classic songs were cut during this time – 'Dirty Deeds', 'Rock And Roll Damnation', 'High Voltage', 'If You Want Blood (You Got It)', 'Whole Lotta Rosie', 'Long Way To The Top', 'Let There Be Rock', and more – and it says plenty that these fan favourites are still staples of the band's current live sets today.

Illustrated throughout with rare photographs from the era, this book documents all the key events of this frenetic time, beginning with the band's very first shows in the bloodhouses of suburban Sydney – even before the name AC/DC had been dreamed up by Margaret Young, Malcolm and Angus's big sister – and culminating with 1979's Highway to Hell, the album that paved the way for the mammoth success of Back in Black and all that was to follow, and the untimely death of Bon Scott, both an end and a new beginning for the band.

A Note From The Author

The mother lode of dates, locales, venues, chart positions, sales numbers, etc. quoted in this book are derived from a wide range of good sources, including reliable websites (cited in the bibliography) and numerous publications, interviews, and articles (also cited in the bibliography). However, as is the nature of projects such as these—and memories being the flexible thing they can sometimes be—these facts and figures can vary from source to source, so I have relied upon only the most reliable, including, in some instances, the band work ledgers maintained by former manager Michael Browning.

Including Info From The Most Significant Years of AC/DC's Five-Decade Career. Plus Epic Photos!

“When Malcolm put the band together, it was obvious what was missing at the time: another great rock band. So it was basically a reaction to that, because the music at that point had just turned into that soft, melodic kind of period, and that seemed to be all over the world.” --ANGUS YOUNG TO VH-1, 2000

Angus Young doing his best 'Dying Bug' on the grimy floor of Melbourne's Hard Rock Cafe. A venue run by their manager, Michael Browning.

Still finding their way in the UK, the band strikes a defiant pose at Shepperton Studios.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book is chock full of photos – many rare – along with memorabilia like record covers, T-shirts, posters, and promo flyers. The text, which takes a “day by day” format, is packed with information for both the casual and diehard fan of the band.―Bob Ruggiero, HoustonPress.com

Informative and a good timeline review. Good companion piece after watching Plug Me In DVD as most concerts were touched on in the book.

I bought this book for my husband and he thought he knew all about Bon Scott until he started reading the book there were some things he didn't even know. So based on my husband's point of view he says it's a very good book to read if you are a fan.

Great book if you are a fan. This book gives you a year by year history of AC/DC from a pub band to the success that they achieved in the 'Bon Scott' years - I really liked it.
