Editorial Reviews

Phil Collins might be swinging away the late '90s, but in 1981 he was sharpening his pop chops, from his first solo offering to this, the first Genesis album to break the hallowed million-copy mark stateside. But Abacab wasn't entirely about charting Top 40 singles ("No Reply At All," "Man on the Corner," and the title track); it still exhibited some late-stage evidence of a trio courting the art-rock muse that had graced its past ("Who Dunnit," "Dodo," "Keep It Dark"). However, by 1983's eponymous follow-up, the hit factory that was Genesis in the mid- to late-1980s was operating full steam ahead, and the angel Gabriel's spectre had all but vanished. Then, there were truly only three. --Bob Michaels

Okay, I'll admit it. I am not a big Phil Collins listener (solo career, that is). Sure, he is a heck of a drummer and has an incredible voice, but I wasn't crazy about Genesis as the '80s progressed. I think the next three Genesis albums ('Genesis,' 1983; 'Invisible Touch,' 1986; 'We Can't Dance,' 1991) were Collins solo albums with Rutherford and Banks just playing along.
But back to 'Abacab.' The 2007 remaster has been long needed. The 1994 remaster contained the edited version of 'Abacab'; this one, fortunately, doesn't. The remaster is incredible!
While the songs aren't as good as their previous effort, 1980's 'Duke,' they are still incredible! 'Abacab,' 'Another Record,' 'Dodo/Lurker,' 'Man On The Corner,' 'Like It Or Not' and 'No Reply At All' are all crown jewels in Genesis' catalog.
Overall, if you haven't bought 'Abacab' or you have but you want a copy with the full length 7 minute version of the title track, than you are in luck! Forget the '94 remaster. Throw that copy away. This is the one to own.
Highly recommended for any Genesis fan. This is an essential release, and it belongs in any record collector's collection!
ENJOY!!!
Musically, the classic Genesis sound is still there thanks to Tony Banks, but is very stripped back. Phil Collins solo work had also started to creep in and his influence was generally a bit stronger (especially on No Reply at All which features the horn section from Earth, Wind and Fire). Other influences include New Wave; especially groups like the Police. Admittedly, while the repetitious Who Dunnit? is not my favorite Genesis track, it does indicate that they were interested in incorporating (at the time) newer sounds into the progressive rock framework.
Speaking of prog, tunes like Abacab and Dodo/Lurker are just fantastic; there is enough going on in each piece that my interest is maintained. At the other end of the spectrum, the quieter tracks like Man on the Corner and the ballad Like it or Not are also nice too.
With respect to this 1994 remastered "definitive" edition it features a (sepia) photo of the group, the lyrics and very good sound quality. For those of us on a tight budget, I feel that the 1994 definitive editions are quite nice; especially at a used copy price.
All in all, although more streamlined, there is still enough going on here that I liked the album very much. The material still holds up well today - even in spite of the fact that they were working with 1980s styles. Recommended along with And Then There Were Three (1978), Duke (1980) and the live set Three Sides Live (1982).
