For alot of us, some of the most simple and memorable tunes ever etched in Metal history have come from Maiden.
So what are you going to say about a group that has pumped out music for 30 years, 15 studio albums and sold over 80 million albums worldwide !? Iron Maiden is one of the biggest bands in South America, Asia and Europe. Do we need to critique them or just appreciate them ? There are 5 out of the 15 albums that I don't care for but that's still 10 that I do like and that's pretty good in my book. We know that 14-16 year old girls decide what the U.S. listens to but a small stronghold still exists in the states and while Lady Ga Ga, American Dribble..I mean Idol and talentless hiphop rule the states the rest of the world makes it possible to have great bands exist since they still buy Metal by the millions. I for one believe that Maiden's albums have gotten better ( Fear Of The Dark Is my personal favorite ) The classics were of course in the 80's but I feel like the early albums (the 80's)have the great 2 or 3 songs per album but overall were weaker albums than what they are producing now.
Brave New World and A Matter Of Life And Death (there last album 4 years ago) were very good efforts in their own right. The Final Frontier is certainly among Iron Maiden's best.
The Final Frontier starts off uncharacteristically with a building intro Satellite 15...The Final Frontier which is really like 2 songs in one. I like the first part alot but The Final Frontier part lays there for me and is the worst part of the album but still listenable. 2) El Dorado starts off with a Barracuda like riff and Dickinson's lyrics are apparent as the chorus sounds almost identical to The Magician from Bruce's solo work. I like the killer guitar solo on this one and overall I find this one of the more powerful tunes. 3)Mother Of Mercy starts with familiar unmistakable Smith/Harris guitar and moves into classic Maidenisque 80's like verse music and then into a good solo before returning back to verse and chorus. 4)Coming Home (don't care too much for the intro and thankfully it turns direction)Softer verses with the chorus picking up steam and though this sounds like several other Maiden tunes it's got enough twist to make it interesting. Beautiful and long guitar work before moving back to Dickinson's operatic singing. 5)The Alchemist is an uptempo Harris offering with Gers and Dickinson contributing. Nothing spectacular but just a straight forward in your face rock song. Another great guitar solo. 2nd weakest song but still listenable.
6) Isle Of Avalon took me some time to like but man does this thing just go in alot of directions ! It's over 9 minutes long and jams out. I'd love to hear it live. If you like Dream Theatre it has some of that feel to it but keeping the familiar Maiden form. 7)Starblind is Smith/Harris at their creative best and Dickinson writing the lyrics. Starts really good and gets better going off track for a short time. This is one of the best on the album for me and again would sound great in concert. I've liked this one more each time I've listened. 8)The Talisman has a rather long slow beginning and then kicks into a Gers/Harris gallop that is signature Maiden and really doesn't stray from that until towards the end for a short time. Another epic 9 minute offering that gets a bit drawn out at the end.9)The Man Who Would Be King is the only song that has Dave Murray contributing. I've always like Murray's stuff. Still has Harris familiar signature on it.10)When The Wild Wind Blows. Plenty of stuff that sounds like previous Maiden but with a twist that goes in a direction that you did not see coming. Over 10 minutes of good music to finish off a very good album.
What I love about recent albums from Maiden is that they put out these long 8 to 10 minute songs and it doesn't feel like it. Before you know it you've just spent over an hour listening and saying to yourself "WOW". These guys did not phone this in. This is a great effort. There's alot of bands that could learn from them. May not be the best album for popping in and listening to one or 2 songs but if you've got the time to sit through over an hour plus of just good music then this is the album to listen to. Could argue album of the year. Easiliy in the top 3 for me.
1. Satellite 15.....The Final Frontier 8.5/10: When I first heard the second half of this song a few months before the album's release, I just thought it was a catchy, fast-paced rocker. WRONG! The beginning of this song is truly bizarre, from the odd synth intro to the creepy space guitar noises to Bruce's reverb filled vocals, it just erases any thoughts about this being just another Maiden album.
2. El Dorado 7/10: Not a bad song! Musicianship is good but the vocals are kind of boring and nonchalant in a sense, it's great to say that this is the probably the worst song on the album.
3. Mother of Mercy 9/10: This is where things get exciting in The Final Frontier! Immediately this song just draws an astounding mental picture of a soldier on the battlefield. Don't pinch yourself if you think back to such songs as "Paschendale" and "The Longest Day", though personally I think this song blows them away!
4. Coming Home 10/10: That's right, it's power ballad time for Maiden! If you know anything of Bruce's solo material, you will know this is all him. A decent amount of bands these days would come off as a bit corny for making a song like this, but Maiden splits the line of heavy and soft which just makes for one fantastic track.
5. The Alchemist 7.5/10: Maiden goes back into their original form in a Janickified song. Quick paced beginning and a catchy riff lead the way into the legendary galloping verses which have propelled Maiden to the top of the metal world. My only gripe with this song is that they've done it before, which slightly cheapens what had been a very original album to this point.
6. Isle of Avalon 8.5/10: Kudos to you if you liked this song just as much the second time as you did the first time, this is the grower on the album! Super complex and very un-maidenlike (save Steve's signature bassline in the beginning). If you didn't like it the first time, give it a few more listens, it's too much to take in in one sitting.
7. Starblind 9/10: Another fairly odd song but a dutified chord striker. Slow and slightly ominous beginning (as are the remaining songs), immediately switches to a big, bad Adrian Smith guitar intro, think Lord Of Light. Bruce propels this song incredibly with his ageless voice, leading into a powerful chorus, headlining this fantastic song.
8. The Talisman 10/10: OH MAN THIS TRACK RULES! From beginning to end, this work of genius will keep any fan of good music's attention. It starts off with a gorgeous acoustic intro which is soon followed by the soothing soft Bruce vocals which paints the picture for the rest of the song. When the metal kicks in, hold on to your chair because you may feel yourself lurching with the moves of the ship at sea! Reminiscent of Ghost of The Navigator from Brave New World except, once again, it's better!
9. The Man Who Would Be King 9/10: This songs music completely overwhelms the vocals, in a good way! Dave Murray doesn't write vocals in his songs, but he sure makes up for it with his music compositions! This is most likely the most dense song on the album, with loads and loads of dual and tri harmony parts that may cause part of your brain to short circuit. Much like Isle of Avalon, give it a few listens before you give your final verdict.
10 When The Wild Wind Blows 11/10: BEST SONG OF THE LAST DECADE BY MAIDEN! If any of you have seen the film or read the novel "When The Wind Blows", then you will appreciate this track that much more. A tearful beginning with the near nursery rhyme soft riff, which leads into a nearly hopeless sounding Bruce, you could swear he was looking out a window and watching the bombs fall on England when he sang this. As expected, it doesn't stay like this forever but the heavy in this song is a different kind of heavy, like they turned the gain from 10 to about 8. It crossed wires with me the first time I heard it but this is how this album should end, with a good thinker! After the full development over this 11 minute opus, and after you hear the wind blow for the last time, you know you have heard metal's finest do it once again.
For anyone that is having second thoughts about buying this album, COME ON YOU IRON!
Up the irons! Long may the Maiden reign!

UP THE IRON'S 🤘 🔥!
