It’s SLAYER!
4 Stars
It’s SLAYER!
Love this album and record itself is perfect, sounds great and no scratches on it. Easily a 5 star. What made me give it a 4 is that the cover itself looks to have been mishandled and bent in some areas.

Slayer put out their best 3 albums in a row (Reign In Blood, South Of Heaven, and Seasons In The Abyss) and their albums will always be held up by those standards no matter how great of an album they put out. With that said, Christ Illusion is nowhere near the masterpiece that RIN, SOH, or SITA were but it is a classic nonetheless.

Christ Illusion is pure thrash! Unlike the previous album, God Hates us all there are no weak songs. No experiments in corny metal. Just thrash and speed metal with a hint of hardcore punk. Every song succeeds in ripping your intestines out and pulverizing your skull. However, generic thrash its not. Try the opening riff to Jihad and the heavy grooves thrown into most of the songs. The music itself, like Slayer's best work, manages to creep into your psyche and stay in your head throughout the day. The vocals and hooks are equally catchy.

I read some reviews where people were calling the lyrics juvenile for singing in protest to religion and war and for conjuring up Satanism. All I have to say to that is - dude, its Slayer! What do you expect? Go listen to Phil Collins is that offends you ot Styper or something. Haha. Also organized religion and war are as big of a problem as they've ever been. It'd be really naïve to think otherwise. Look at the world we live in. Are you blind? If you find these topics or views offensive then that proves that we bands like this more than ever!

My only criticism is that some of the riffs are derivative of earlier songs. That's not to say these are uninspired. Quite the opposite. This is extremely energetic. Its no Reign In Blood but its classic Slayer. Buy this.

Slayer's new CD is definitely their best since Dave Lombardo's departure. His presence is truly a welcome addition, that obviously injected the band with much needed energy and inspiration. While their previous 3 releases have been unquestionably good, they pale in comparison to "Christ Illusion." From the first track, the guys show they're in excellent form. The song structures keep you guessing - as soon as you get comfy with a couple of verses, they slow down the tempo a bit and inject some amazingly powerful melodic riffs that nicely break up the super fast thrashy rythms. This only adds to the powerful, calculated assault on your senses. Lyrically, they're treading familiar ground: the usual anti-religious and war-related themes prevail. But, when it comes to Slayer, what else would you rather hear screamed atop such musical fury? It makes sense, works like a charm, and Slayer are smart enough to stick to their guns here. I very much appreciate that, rather than a suspicious "maturity", as in the case of Metallica. Slayer are by no means rehashing old material. They were the originators of a style, and they are sticking to its basic formula, while adding noticeable elements that set this release apart from all others. In this case, like I said, the incorporation of more melodic riffs and tempo changes is what makes it all the more powerful. Anyone that has been even slightly dissappointed with any of Slayer's last few releases has to give this CD a spin. I was very pleasantly surprised, and so will you.

In short, this album is incredibly strong, and shows that Slayer still have it. They always have been, and will always be, the unholy kings of Speed Metal.

Slayer are back in the saddle once again with Christ Illusion, their first studio album since 2001's God Hates Us All. As we have come to expect from Slayer, lyrics include God, violence, and blood. Unlike God Hates, the sound of this recording is far more brutal. I think this makes the over all Slayer experience more satisfying. The return of Dave Lombardo on drums is very welcome by this fan, as his drumming is the sound of Slayer. Songs like "Flesh Storm", "Skeleton Christ" and "Catatonic" call to mind the heyday of Slayer in their prime. Tom Araya sounds as convincing as ever, "..I've seen the ways of God, I'll take the Devil any day" as he growls out lyrics as fast as King and Hanneman can riff, matching them with lightning fast bass playing. Awesome! My expectations were far exceded with this album, and it proves that Slayer are still the Gods of Thrash.

I grew up listening to Slayer. There were other thrash metal bands like Metallica and Anthrax. There were other speed and death metal bands (too many to even thinkabout). And then there was Slayer. They did it like no other band did it. Slayer was a music genre in of itself. There was no comparison, equal, or counterpart.

They broke through with Reign in Blood. But they really hit their stride on South of Heaven and peaked on Seasons in the Abyss. This CD takes you back to the pre-Reign in Blood days when all that mattered was speed. So that makes it refreshing. Lyrics are thought provoking, mainly social commentary, not too much blood-and-guts and Satan worship (but it is there...hey, this is Slayer we're talking about!). It's great that they have Dave Lombardo back on drums. He makes all the difference. This CD is a pleasant surprise for true Slayer fans because it is a good solid effort. Look at their picture in the liner notes...dude, are they old or what?!?! But boy, can they still play! If you are a real Slayer fan, I would recommend this CD. It'll take you back to your youth.

If you are not a Slayer fan, this is not the CD for you. If you want to experiment with Slayer, start with South of Heaven and then get Seasons in the Abyss. If you can, burn both of those CDs onto one disc and listen without stopping. That's an awesome musical experience. After you get used to that, then dig back to Reign in Blood and Hell Awaits. if you have warmed up to them by then, then you get Show No Mercy and this CD.

After Seasons in the Abyss, I gave up them because Lombardo left the band and it just wasn't the same for me. I never really got into the later CDs because I was a Dave Lombardo fan. His return has renewed my faith in their abilities. Solid CD. 4 stars. Thumbs up. Die-hard Slayer fans will dig it completely. Dude, they're Slayer. They still rule.
